Yep you do have to have an account to play. Think there might be a patch to get around it.

You can create a local account too.

Even with a local/offline account, GFWL causes problems for people, including myself.

Games for Windows Live? It's Microsoft's intrusive form of DRM, that is rumored to be shutting down next July. Wait until WB removes it or find a way online to bypass GfWL if you can.

They die unless converted to other service... like steamworks.
Some games are being patched.

They either get ported to a different service like Steamworks or they lose their multiplayer ability.

What that means is that any game that has GFWL for Multiplayer will no longer have multiplayer.

At least some companies are looking into patching out the need for GFWL though not sure what that will do for multiplayer. I guess that will depend on if they decide to swap over their multiplayer to steamworks. It is a big task to do that and many companies might not want to spend the time or money switching over.

Not really DRM so much as a misguided attempt to integrate PC and Xbox gaming. Steam is usually the primary source of DRM these days, and since MS is shutting GFWL down, it will also be where social aspects of gaming are centered (friends list, achievements, etc.).

GFWL was a good idea, but it was completely redundant since Steam did everything already. There's no real point in having multiple layers of the same features.

its everything steam is only minus the competance and alot less games GFWL is exactly what youd expect a steam competitor from M$ to be, ill miss the games that its joining star wars galaxies and many others on the list of stuff that didnt make it but the service itself has never been something i liked and unfortunately im speaking with some experience of GFWL, for all is dislike origin it does at least work with no problems

I don't know if it's just me, but I don't have a problem with GFWL.
Edit: I never had any of the issues you guys have had, but now I see why so many people have issues with it. Thanks for the enlightenment, guys.

The majority of people have issues with GFWL. Its a very hated DRM. I've had problems with it randomly deleting my saved games.

I also dislike having to buy points to buy DLC for games I have on steam. Which would leave with either just short of points to get all the DLC I wanted which would require buying more and having extra wasted points that I wouldn't be using for anything else.

I have never had a problem with it myself, used it with Fable 3, Halo 2 and a few other games.

I never had problems with it until I had problems (makes sense, doesn't it) and used to think it isn't THAT bad. It doesn't work well with Windows 8 (somewhat ironically) and now I really really hate it.

Windows 8... there is your problem... Firstly GFWL came out with Vista (Horrible system btw).

It is Microsoft's own DRM service

You can't possibly make an excuse for it not running on their own Operating System. They just don't care about PC, because they want everyone on xbox
Also consider that the service isn't available for a huge list of countries, who just can't play or get the games that use(d) it, even though it's 2013 and everything is available online.

If anyone has already made an account and is having issues getting logged in in the game (as I was) take a look at these threads for ideas. I just uninstalled and reinstalled GFWL and now it works fine (aside from being GFWL) http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2522404 http://steamcommunity.com/app/205350/discussions/0/846943514174506118/
