The Brass Teapot (2012)
American fantasy comedy film. It's about a down-on-their-luck couple who come across a magical brass teapot that shoots out money when they hurt themselves. Very interesting concept, good cast (Juno Temple, Michael Angarano, Alia Shawkat, Billy Magnussen, Bobby Moynihan, Jack McBrayer, Matt Walsh, Thomas Middleditch, Cristin Milioti and more) but I don't really like the ending because they kinda get off too easy, just having the Jews and the new owners kill each other and they just walk away. As a big horror movie fan I'd have the story go into a different direction and have them get more extreme with the pain-inflicting but again, the movie actually went into a more disappointing direction. Still, I did like it, so I can recommend it.

John Was Trying to Contact Aliens (2020)
American documentary short film. It's about a guy who tried to contact aliens by broadcasting music into space for over 30 years with his state-of-the-art broadcasting equipment. This isn't even as much about trying to contact aliens as it is about the guy and that he found love. He might be a bit delusional (I certainly wouldn't spend 30 years of my life with trying to contact aliens) but he's harmless. He has good taste in music (German electronica, afrobeat, funk, jazz), he seems to be a bit of a hoarder but that's basically it. Just 16 minutes about some guy. And I enjoyed it. It might even have been a bit too short. Overall I can recommend this.

The Bar/El Bar (2017)
Spanish black comedy thriller film. It's about a group of people in a bar in Madrid and the chaos that ensues when two of them are suddenly killed by a sniper after they step out. I'm not sure I agree with this movie being described as a black comedy. It's for sure a thriller but I didn't really see any comedic elements, not even black comedy ones. So I'd classify this more as a survival thriller. Anyway, this movie was intense and has you on the edge of your seat for most of its runtime. Nice setting, mostly in one location (I mean you could count the bar, its cellar and the sewers under there as one), the different characters were interesting and the story was good to follow. I also found out that this movie was written and directed by Álex de la Iglesia, who also wrote and directed the fantastic The Day of the Beast/El día de la bestia (1995), which is probably my favourite christmas movie. So yeah, while this one doesn't come close to that, it's still very entertaining and definitely worth the watch, so I can recommend it.

Of all his films I've seen, this is the one I remember the least. Maybe I was expecting something similar to his other black comedies (El día de la bestia, Common Wealth/La comunidad, Ferpect Crime/Crimen ferpecto), and was disappointed? I agree with you about the category, it was clearly a thriller. And not a bad one, but when you have the desire to watch something different...

Yesterday was a trash movie night, starting off with Inhumanwich! (2016), which is absolutely something.. And then Benny Loves You (2019), I usually love my British horror more trashy than this, but the movie felt awfully long during a lot of these fighting scenes, ending the night with The Killer Eye (1999), which was just a weird horny movie with eye balls fondling titties really.

A Panicky Picnic (1909)
French-Spanish surrealist comedy fantasy horror film. It's about an aristocratic couple of city dwellers who decide to have a picnic in the great outdoors but everything seems to go wrong all at once. There's not much story, because after that initial picnic (which is infested with vermin) the story kinda falls apart and we get fascinating, yet incoherent scenes of pots turning into faces, weird stop-motion animated nightmares, a well turning into a head/balloon thing and so on. It is magnificently surreal and I've read that it might have influenced Luis Buñuel, which honestly wouldn't surprise me. So if you're looking for a story you won't really find one but if you're looking for imaginative imagery, (for the time) inventive special effects and surrealism I can very much recommend this one.

A Writer's Odyssey (2021)
Chinese action-adventure fantasy film. It's about a man searching for his daughter who's hired to kill the writer of a fantasy novel but somehow, the novel appears to be impacting life in the real world. I enjoyed it despite the story being a bit all-over. The in-novel parts of the movie (if I can describe them like that) look great, have very good special effects and awesome fight scenes. Overall it was entertaining so I can recommend it.

Nonnas (2025)
American biographical comedy-drama film. It's about a guy who risks everything to honor his recently deceased, beloved mother by opening an Italian restaurant with actual grandmothers as chefs. I enjoyed it. It's all about family and food. Some light wit but nothing laugh-out-loud funny. Good cast (Vince Vaughn, Susan Sarandon, Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro, Joe Manganiello, Campbell Scott, Richie Moriarty and more). It's also based on a true story. Overall I'd say there are worse ways to spend 2 hours. It's good but don't expect too much. Can recommend.

I also had spaghetti when I watched the movie. I knew this movie would make me crave Italian food, so I came prepared. :D

Upstream (1927)
American comedy drama film. It's about an actor of great name but little talent who gets offered to play Hamlet but soon forgets about his friends from the boarding house he's been living in. The story is not very original (basically just "guy becomes famous and forgets about his old friends") but it's fun nonetheless. So yeah, maybe not the best of John Ford's silents but if you're looking for something entertaining I can recommend it.

Novocaine (2001)
American black comedy thriller film. It's about a dentist finds himself a murder suspect after a sexy patient seduces him and steals all of the drugs from his practice. Very good cast (Steve Martin, Laura Dern, Helena Bonham Carter, Keith David, Kevin Bacon and more). This is a movie that, if you don't like going to the dentist, you won't enjoy. Sure, you get Steven Martin as your dentist but you also get "gratuitously painful-to-watch scenes of dental work", as some IMdB user wrote in his review from when the movie came out. Apart from that it's also a bit uneven, it's trying to be a good thriller/film noir but it doesn't quite get there. Overall I can still recommend it, though.

Not really sure what that was or what it was supposed to be. All in all it played like a half-baked 1980ies anthology type of show like Amazing Stories or something but it was neither really interesting, nor funny which was probably its biggest crime. The only interesting segment that seemed to go somewhere was the one with Pedro Pascal, not just because he is by far the best of the cast, and his performance would elevate (and has) a lot of drivel but that was the only story that was genuinely human and had a constructed narrative of any kind.
Considering this premiered at Sundance and won a Variety/Golden Globe award... I was very disappointed.
I guess the nostalgia factor played into it although I was a teen in the 80ies (not in Oakland, thankfully) and it didn't make me nostalgic for it.
All in all, I'd say skip that one unless you're in the mood for a really bad palate cleanser to appreciate something else all the more.

Novocaine (2025)
American action comedy film. It's about a bank employee with the inability to feel pain who goes out to rescue his co-worker after she is taken hostage by a group of bank robbers. Good cast (Jack Quaid, Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson, Jacob Batalon, Betty Gabriel, Matt Walsh and more). It's very fun. And that's what action comedy really just need to be. Fun. So don't expect a masterpiece but if you simply want to watch an entertaining movie, this might be it. Can recommend.

You did. I just wish I could've seen this at the cinema but there was literally not a single screening.

It's a movie about a real life public fund embezzlement scandal that happened in a Long Island public school district in the early 2000s.
I don't usually go for those "true story" movies because they tend to be just paint-by-the-numbers timeline retelling with a side of dramatization but the cast (Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney are leading) brought me in and I'm glad they did.
The movie doesn't follow the usual path and portrays the culprits as three-dimensional real people in all their delusions, human weaknesses and aspirations. It's not a portrait of a crime so much as a portrait of how ordinary people can end up doing the wrong thing for the right reason and then from then spiral out in doing more wrong out of selfishness and the illusion of invulnerability.
Of course Jackman and Janney are both helping along beautifully in making you feel bad for people you really wouldn't think you'd feel bad for.

Smile 2 (2024), great horror movie, rated it 9/10 on iMDB. The acting was great, plot predictable if you had seen the first, but, overall a good take on the franchise. And the music was really scary too. I must say that it isn't a children's movie at all, it contains heavy gore, scary scenes etc.

The Quiet Man (1952)
American romantic comedy drama film. It's about a retired American boxer who returns to the village of his birth in Ireland, where he falls for a spirited redhead whose brother is contemptuous of their union. Very good cast (John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Barry Fitzgerald and more). The story is nice, the cinematography is good, they even speak some Gaelic in this movie (which is rare for a major Hollywood production). Overall I enjoyed it and can recommend it.

It's a survival thriller that mostly takes place at 300 feet below sea level in the North Sea during a storm. Deep sea divers who are doing repairs on gas pipelines get stranded when the rough weather causes the ship to which they are tethered to malfunction, severing the umbilical of one of the divers who is left with only 8 minutes of oxygen to breath in his backup tank.
As you can tell, it's not a chill movie. The intense script and direction will keep you on edge and the cast sells the tension and emotion of the rescue efforts really well (Woody Harrelson and Simu Liu are especially good). The plot would seem somewhat unbelievable except it's based on a documentary directed by the same director about a real life incident.
I hadn't heard about this one and I highly recommend it, especially if you like claustrophobic thrillers with not one psychopath in sight.

Neighborhood Watch (2025). If you not tired with 50 movies Jack Quaid putting in recently - check this one out. Its a movie where Quaid playing mentally ill young man that becomes witness to kidnapping and trying to investigate with help of retired college cop played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. It was nice little indie movie with good acting and chemistry between leads.
Fallen (1998) - checked it out because somehow i missed it in a vast Denzel Washington filmography. For a first hour or so it was pretty cool mystic thriller about cop trying to fight vengeful demon, Denzel played his role well as usual and there is stacked support cast (Gandolfini, Sutherland, Goodman). But after an hour this movie just starts to lose its steam, investigation going and going and ending that supposed to be dark and sad looks very funny. Anyway, i dont regret watching it, because it satisfied my curiosity, but its not a good movie.

lol you can never go wrong with good ole Hollywood nepotism. I was already pretty tired of his two facial expressions in The Boys and now look, he has a movie career. Meanwhile Karl Urban is doing Mortal Kombat II... Shame
I kinda liked Fallen. The cast makes up for the flaws in the script. Not a movie I'd watch again but I enjoyed it when I did.

I think he can get better if he takes on more interesting roles. I was surprised how convincing he was as a bad guy in Companion.

Didn't find him at all convincing in that movie. The character's actions were bad but his acting was exactly as it always is except he was only using one of his two expressions and dropped the goofy smile.

Wick Is Pain
A documentary about John Wick franchise. Learned some interesting facts about the director(s), how closely John Wick production was to shut down, the risks everyone took when they were making John Wick 1, some of the struggles they face during and post production, and the amazing stunt team behind the franchise. It also hinted why the storyline is not that good for the franchise. Would recommend if you are a John Wick fan. It certainly makes me watch to rewatch all 4 movies again.

I thought it was just because it was made in the 21st century. They don't know how to make franchises anymore.
They sure started rough. Indie movies are always huge risks and very few are rewarded with billions like this one was.

That is one reason. They also said in the movie they had certain scenes they would like to show, then they would figure out a story so that those scenes would fit.
Yeah I did not know the risk and stress would be that high.
It is also quite funny that they had planned to show John Wick doing book binding. Glad that did not made it in the final version of the film.

hey had certain scenes they would like to show, then they would figure out a story so that those scenes would fit.
Heh back assward storytelling is pretty much everywhere these days. They are trying to hit "key moments", especially on tv for "second screen entertainment" to get people to look up from their phones and instantly tweet about it.
All in all I'd say John Wick hasn't done too badly considering that approach.
It is also quite funny that they had planned to show John Wick doing book binding
Haha that would have been great. Nerdy hobbies are for everyone. Especially when you need to chill.

Death of a Unicorn (2025)
American dark fantasy comedy horror film. It's about a father and his daughter who accidentally kill a unicorn, causing them to be hunted down by its parents. This started off good, when we got some mystery around the unicorn they killed and some interesting mythology about unicorns in general. But at some point this movie just went into monster movie mode and they were just treated as any other murderous creature in one of those movies. The cast was very good (Jenna Ortega, Paul Rudd, Will Poulter, Richard E. Grant, Anthony Carrigan, Téa Leoni, Sunita Mani and more). Overall it definitely could've been better but it's still entertaining, so I can recommend it.

Just Imagine (1930)
American science fiction musical-comedy film. It's about a vaudeville performer who died in 1930 after being struck by lightning and scientists in 1980 who revive him but now he has nothing to do so he befriends a guy who can't marry the girl of his dreams before he goes on an expedition to Mars. This movie's a bit all-over and the musical numbers aren't that great either. But the premise is interesting and the main character is fun. Also, it's a very 30s vision of the future with a 1980 where people have numbers instead of names and they commute to work with small single-seat airplanes high above the city. Later in the movie we also get a plotline about people on Mars and how they're all twins with one of them being good and the other evil and yeah, it's just a lot of different stuff mashed together and not all of it works. But if you're just curious about how these people in 1930 saw 1980 this is a fun watch. Can recommend.

On the Count of Three (2021)
American dark comedy drama film. It's about two best friends who make a suicide pact and spend their final day taking care of unfinished business. At 86 minutes (or 77 if you don't want to count the end credits) this is definitely on the shorter side of things but the story was over so there was no need to make it any longer, the length was spot on for the story that was being shown. Good cast (Jerrod Carmichael (who also directed this), Christopher Abbott, Lavell Crawford, Henry Winkler, J. B. Smoove, Tiffany Haddish, Jared Abrahamson and more). Overall this was very good (although it was definitely more drama than comedy) and I can recommend it.

Here we go, I'll start.
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10
