So, we're less than 24 hours from a sometimes overrated, sometimes annoying, sometimes awesome, sometimes all 3 at the same-time event known as the Steam Summer Sale. With that in mind, I felt it was a good time to reinforce some of the general sale "rules" that smart shoppers employ as undoubtedly there are a few of you who may be experiencing your first major Steam sale or maybe its just your first with a new rig. Either way, its good to be refreshed. Its time to get excited and undoubtedly let down all in one go!

Follow these tips and you'll ensure yourself of always getting the best deal during an event:

  • Only buy something over the first 9 days of the sale if its on a Daily Deal, Community Choice or Flash Deal.
  • If a targeted game never hits one of the "Big 3" (Daily, Community, or Flash), buy it on the last day of the sale if its in your price range.
  • If you own all the games offered in a vote or just DGAF abt the selection, vote for the greatest discount or the one never seen on-sale before.
  • Be sure to compare prices on other sites like Amazon, GMG, or really anywhere. A lot of times they will price-match Steam prices or even better them. It doesnt hurt to wait a few hours after the Daily Deals are shown to see if this happens.
  • Trading took a big hit with the regional and new market rules, but it may still be advantageous to check the heavy volume traders to see if any further savings are possible as long as you have something to offer.
  • If you see a price mistake: Jump on it immediately. Don't think about it. Don't hesitate. Add to Cart. Buy as gift.
  • Be smart if targeting an indie game. If you think it will be bundled, it will be. 75% or better on indies.
  • Always buy minimum 5 gift copies of Bad Ratz. You never know when one might come in handy.

MISC:

  • Install Enhanced Steam . Its the best tool for price checking, finding out if its the lowest price ever, etc. A must have for someone who uses Steam a lot.
  • Expect Steam to be sluggish or go down at some point during the sale espc if they do any freebies. Last summer it got much better once the commodity system went into place for cards, but who knows what madness they have in store for us this year.

With that out of the way, please add in your own tips/rules for sales and mention what you're looking to get! I'll add mine in another post.
