Hello Steamgifters...

I made a giveaway yesterday that ended today. The winner of the giveaway has a very shady profile. The winner has been on the steam for 6 year and has only 11 games. But this is not the wierd part. None of the games on this account have ever been played.

I checked the whole profile. None of the games show a single minute of gameplay. Even the inventory has just 5 things (4 coupons and 1 TF2 thingy that everyone gets).

Can the support or staff members please suggest what I should do. I do not want to give the game to someone (probably bot even) who is never ever gonna play any game or may not even activate the gift.

Thanks for help. I really appreciate it.

EDIT: Have added the winner. Waiting for response. Will try to get some knowledge about the suspicious account. Will update the thread when some new info comes.

Edit 2 As per Bobofatt's suggestion, asked for a reroll on suspicion of alternate account. My promise if it is a legitimate account, I promise to give the original winner another game to make up for the wrong on my side.

EDIT 3 some people are thinking that I would give the game no matter what to the original winner. That is not right. I will go with what the support says. If they say the account is legit I will give the game in question for sure + another game from my side to make up for suspecting that person's legitimacy. If support says it is a bot account or alternate account I won't give anything to the original winner. I will just give the game to the new winner after the re-roll.

Maybe you should select the "Request New Winner" option?

The giveaway just ended. So I do not want to be in any trouble also. That is why I am asking so if any staff/support member can suggest me something or someone who has had previous experience like this.

Something similar for me.
Ask reroll. Support don't tell you if was approved. Just wait a few days check if the winner is different.

Actually, they do answer your support request. It'S even done automatically.

My last reroll (From 2 months ago) has received this answer:
Automated Message: Request approved.

That only means that the message part was automated;- the ticket was seen - and dealt with - manually, by a support member. They click a button, and "Request approved" gets automatically put in the message box. Don't get the idea that some tickets are automated - they're all dealt with manually..

I am aware of that. I was just mentioning to DeepWolf that the ticket is automatically answered once it's been dealt with because he was saying that support doesn't tell you when it is.

Wow, glad I didn't win anything from you when I started getting back into PC gaming after quite a number of years.
Dec 2004 - Half-life 2 Collector's edition which showed unplayed till recently re-played it.
Next game added was Jul 2013.

Its not about 1 game buddy. I am concerned because in 6 years there is not a single minute game activity on the account. All the games show 0 Hrs played. I would like the winner to actually atleast try the game if not play them to death. That is why I am asking for suggestions.

And in 8 years my account showed 0 game activity. By your standards I should not have been allowed to enter or perform giveaways till I played my next game (as I could have easily chosen to skip HL2 since I'd already beaten it before time tracking and achievements (and then again on the 360)).
In fact, I didn't replay HL2 again till Jul 7, 2013 10:41am.

My point stands someone might be getting back into gaming. Of course it could just as well be secondary account as has been suggested. There are methods of handling that as well. Further if they don't redeem the game you can report them. Sure you lose the key you send them if they don't activate it, but that'll get a secondary account off of SG as well.

FWIW, not saying it doesn't look suspicious. I mean, I suppose I'd have never known if someone felt the same about me when I first started coming here. :)

I am not saying that people can not come back to gaming or anything. Its just that I do not want to give a $95 (Even though I bought it for 15) game pack to someone who is never ever gonna touch it. I just want to make sure it goes to an account where it will be played and not to an secondary account which will just be thrown away.

Also atleast one of the games on the account is from 2013 and even that game has not been played at all. So that got my spidey senses tingling. The account may be totally legit, that I am not denying. But it just doesn't feel completely right.

NP, I understand. I was just offering perspective from the other side. That's why I made sure to agree it does look a bit suspicious on its own unique reply.

Being you're required to have an ex amount of games before joining the site, this situation didn't really apply to you :p

Actually it did, the first few game that passed me into the correct number of games also had me still listed as games unplayed.
I joined here before I restarted playing HL2.

You have to check my Steam profile then. 106 games owned, and none of them shows any activity other than DotA 2. :D And you can say I don't play any games other than DotA, but my friends know that I spend my time playing games only. When I show them my Steam library, they just bowl over in shock over the amount of games. And then the inevitable question, do you play all of them? After that, ey, you don't play the crack versions? I use to pirate games like nobody's business and play them as soon as my computer could support it. In my country, the value of the original games can reach up to the food expenses for half a month. That's just for ONE game. So you understand why I started pirating games. But I really wanted to support the developer, because there are some games that really touched a part of me. Games like Angband, some obscure dungeon game where I fight skeletons, Super Mario, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Half Life, The Last Remnant, CnC, King's Bounty, Bioshock Infinite; each one of them affected me in some way or other. And thats with NO ACTIVITY except DotA 2 of course. I recently graduated, and got my debit card just for the sake of Humble Bundle, because it was the first time I ever considered spending money legally to obtain the games, support the developer and help charity at the same time. When I start working, I plan to buy a high end PC to support my gaming life. All this Steam backlog is there for me to peruse when I have my system finally, which should be in a year or 2. And then, hello 50' TV, hello SteamBox.

I'm just saying, try to contact the person. Tell him your concern. And try to be courteous. Maybe he is in a same situation as me.

I have added the person already before even making the thread. I do not intend any disrespect to anyone. I am usually calm even if someone abuses me, so don't worry. I'll be very courteous to the account holder if they come around to talking to me.

I do understand what you are saying about backlog. I have a huge backlog too. But I do play whatever and whenever I can. But this account bought a newly released $60 game few months back and then never came back to playing it. I guess that is what got me worried. I too had a very old computer not very long ago that wouldn't run any games. Even the NFS Most Wanted from like 8-10 years back would not run on it. (just 512) mb ram. Recently upgraded and started playing whenever.

and I am Loving it :0)

There are so many circumstances that may explain it, but there is nothing better than just shooting an email and adding him on Steam and send a message to him. Hell, if you're talking about CoD:Ghost, he may even be turned off by all the reviews its getting and decided to just fuck the game. LOL

Glad you understood where I'm standing. Personally, I think mine is way worse considering I have a PS3 with over 40+ backlog in there and I'm planning to buy an XBox 360 and a Wii soon. And a PS4, probably. Haha

It is not CoD. I would never do such disastrous thing to anyone. I do play games like COD and Battlefield but not a fan of COD actually.
It is Serious Sam Complete Pack.

Just waiting for the winner to respond back to me. I am probably gonna have talk with him/her and see what happens then.

It might be worth noting that Steam only started tracking the amount of time a game has been played a few years ago. So if it's an older account that hasn't been played since before that change, it won't show any time played (for example I'm sure I played hundreds of hours of Team Fortress Classic, but Steam doesn't show it since it was too long ago).

That said, although it's certainly possible that someone found steamgifts.com, remembered they had a steam account from years ago, went and activated it and then entered and won your giveaway, it seems kind of unlikely. I'd be more inclined to think that someone had a secondary account for some reason and they're using it as a second steamgifts.com account to enter more giveaways.

I don't know if there's an easy way to know for sure - are any of the games in the account fairly new? Like, released after 2011?
If not, you could always do a scientific test: give him the game (make sure he marks it as received), then see if it gets activated on his account. If so he's probably legit, but if not then odds are it's someone's secondary account and it should be banned from steamgifts. Unfortunately you're out a game though (unless you want to do something sneaky like buy a cheap key, give them that, then see if it gets activated or not before giving them the real game).

Anyway, hope that helps a little, good luck!

To add to this, there was recently a wipe of Time Played after a patch to Steam, roughly a month ago, resetting to zero or even not listing Time Played on games.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Really? I was unaware of that... Did only some people get affected by it? For me my playtimes got messed up; as in steam added anywhere from 10 - 50 hours to my games for w/e reason :S But it seems only to be client side as anyone looking at my profile still sees the correct times and if I launch the game it resets to the correct time.

Yeah, many of my games look like they've never been played despite many hours put into them. This is visible to me, and to people on my friends list. Likewise, I noticed on several of my friends' profiles that playtime for games I had just seen them playing before the bork-up were showing zero, despite them having played those games for hundreds of hours. And again, several of the games looked like they'd never been played, with no Time Played info shown, not even a zero.

Also if you play games in offline mode unless they've changed it recently it doesn't keep track of how long you play.

Just send in a re-roll request if you think it might be an alternate account. If we find something, we'll get you a new winner. If not, we'll let you know.

You do realize he could be playing in offline mode which doesn't record hours played.

I wanted to point this out, but you said it first. This could also explain why he is showing as offline to Grauntgar. It'd really be a shame for someone to lose out on a game they won because someone else judged them too quickly. :(

EDIT: Though Grauntgar said he'd buy another copy of the game so I guess the guy is safe regardless. :P

I have 50 games in my account, but most of them are just played for few minutes, that's because I'm really bussy. BTW, I don't trade much, so there's not many items in my inventory. Also, maybe he's just using Steam to play a specific game, Like I use Origin just because I got the Humble Origin Bundle. Not everyone has to be a "Steam tycoon", right?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Much more likely they have several "dummy accounts" and use these multiple accounts to win giveaways, whereby they trade the games to their main account, or sell them, etc.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Heh for all you know he does his gaming when there's no internet around so Steam doesn't record his playtime. I've done this for quite a few games and hell, The Walking Dead will crash on me if I play it with an active connection! -_-

If I'm gifting on Steam Gifts, I'd give it to the suspicious account. If I really cared who got something, I wouldn't give it away here. I'd give it to someone I knew.

If it's worth it to you, refuse this gift even if SG staff say no to a re-roll. Don't take my suggestion as gospel though. You need to do what you feel is right.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I feel what you are saying. But I would like someone who will play the game to get the game, not someone who will just trade it somewhere. You can make an argument that I have won 4 giveaways and have not played them yet. Yes that is true. But I plan to play atleast one of them starting tomorrow afternoon. I do have a game installing right now, but due to low internet speed currently, i can not play it.

Also if the the support says it is legit, i will gift the game right away. I would trust them. They are selected by the community and other mods for a reason. They have experience checking these things. If they are ok, I'm ok.
