As some of you probably remember, Agony Unrated was given away for free for all Agony owners
https://steamcommunity.com/games/487720/announcements/detail/1688180897603879445

Now the dev changed their mind and decided to revoke Unrated game from all Agony owners who got it for free

Update 1 The dev reacted:

Update 2
https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/487720/view/3094539594215952980

Let's have some fun with math:

Agony sold an estimated 200k copies, with over 100k dating back to 2019.
At 95% discount, in Europe, the "Unrated Update" costs today 0.62€. Some will act on it resulting in a number of sales.

We're looking at a max theoretical value of 124000€ in additional income for Madmind Studio out of this "solution". Clearly, not everyone bought it from Europe and not everyone will rebuy the UNRATED version so it's safe to assume we're actually looking at a lower value but still enough to matter.

Even at 99% discount, we're looking at a max theoretical value of 24980€ in additional income.

It seems they added the "Update for US" bundle for my region and it is only 65% off. FYI, the game was 83% off in the last sale, also it was 85% off in October. I'd rather wait for the next sale and buy it cheaper than use their ** solution. They're definitely making profit from this.

That's a great illustration how to make people even more angry when trying to resolve the problem. Really, I was patient and waited for solution, but giving a 65% discount instead of something that was promised to be free "till the end of the world"...man.

Blacklisting the devs. Thanks for the "solution". Never buying one of their game again.

This is the best solution we can think of that’s within our reach, though we’re still in talks with Steam, trying to find another way to resolve this issue.

Yeah I'm gonna wait to see if this is their definitive solution, wouldn't want to buy it again and then see it restored to everyone afterwards...

Simple solution: send Agony Unrated as a gift inside Steam to all owners of the original.

Another one: automated distribution similar to what Neocore Games did to give Van Helsing: Final Cut to the owners of the trilogy: https://steamcommunity.com/app/400170/discussions/0/490125103628159104

This second method makes use of an external website but it checks your Steam account for a particular package or packages, then it generates a key.

2 simple solutions where the people don't have to pay for the game again?!

Nah! That sounds nuts! Better sell the game again with a 95% discount.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, it could be another case of Hanlon's razor

"never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

The 95% discount is the maximum they can apply, I think Valve removed the option to make 99% discounts. If they set a 100% discount then anyone could add the game to their library, they can't configure a "complete the set" bundle with a 100% discount.

65% or 75% discount in other regions btw xD
Literally I can get the game for half the price of their ♥♥♥ solution if I wait for the next steam sale.

I just read your post from above, i was about to say the same about the price during the last big sale.
IMO devs set the %OFF based on get a minimun income and not thinking to set it closer to a free game.

I believe the issue they may be having with a method like this is: imagine the account owner they just sent that gift to is a thirteen year old kid.

(That said, if they owned it already in the first place due to the original package...)

So... I have to pay A$ 1.07 for a game I already owned? Wow.

Probably a waste of time, but make a quick ACCC report and include Valve Corporation in the title. Reports related to them might get flagged since they fined them $3 million a few years ago.

how to make that ? :o i never did it before

This relates to Australian laws. The reason everyone on Steam can get refunds on games easily now is because Valve lost in court and was fined. Though I guess anyone could make an anonymous report if they wanted to.

It's not the point of the thread, obviously, but the math of the OP is wrong. 0.62€ minus VAT minus Steam's share are about 35 cents of raw income.

I think it's Ultramaster's math from here, and it's wrong in a couple of places. Counting as if everyone that bought Agony will buy the bundle being the biggest one

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, yeah, it was borrowed and wrong math. :D But at least the 124000 euros figure was labeled as "max theoretical", acknowledging that not everyone would take the deal.

somehow i now see agony unrated update at 95% off, unrated update at 95% off, or unrated update for asia at 75% off. i am not in asia. all 3 bundles contain both agony and agony unrated. i hope whoever they had working on the game itself was better at their job than whoever they have setting up these steam bundles.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, they just did an adjustment. We'll probably be seeing more regional bundles added also as the first bundle wasn't showing up for some due to the price being too low in certain regions. From what I'm understanding there's a certian minimum threshold for pricing and if it goes lower than that it won't show.

I don't know, this incident makes me think about the Martha is dead issue, where parts of the game were censored on the PS platform.
If I understood correctly, in Agony the Unrated update was automatic for the vanilla purchase. Devs or Steam may have decided to split the two things to make sure that the uncensored version was purchased (or eventually obtained) by own will than enforced, to avoid any politically correct plague. Odd timing of events.
Succubus with the unrated free DLC that you can get separately seems to be what the Agony game was not back in the day and should have been.

They just put Agony unrated at 85% off. So the "Update bundle" now cost 0.09€ in my region. It's not free, but close.

UPDATE:
Hello guys, as you can see, we've set up several separate bundles for different regions, depending on the minimum price that each region allowed us to get away with. It ranges from 65 to 95% off.

It's worth mentioning that this is a temporary solution and the only one available to us using our tools. We are, however, contacting Steam and GOG as well to ask for a significant number of free keys for Agony UNRATED (for those who are unaware, devs can't generate a big number of keys without giving the platform owner a good reason to do so).

If they provide us with those, we'll set up a system where Agony owners will be able to claim their lost copy of the game. Stay tuned here or on our Discord to get an update on that.

Reading the idiotic answer from Steam (the image 2 posts above), I'm sending them a following request:

Greetings :)

According to the announcement by Agony publishers (https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/487720/view/3094539594215952980) it is a consequence of Steam actions, that Agony Unrated has disappeared from my library. Therefore I request that what has been given to me previously by the Devs of Agony, and presumably has been removed by a negligent action of a Steam employee (negligent to the point of not even sending a customary information of the game's removal) is immediately restored to my account by Steam.

Reading the answers, that you have sent to some other folks complaining about this, please don't give me a BS answer, that to regain, what you have unlawfully taken away from me, I need to purchase anything.

Sincerely yours,

Aydaylin

Link to the answer presumably received by another user, that I'm referring to - https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/778591242560339988/946918185888784445/2022-02-26-015244_933x279_scrot.png

Not that I particularly care about owning the Unrated version, but those actions by Steam are unacceptable.

The answer, that I've just received:

Hi Aydaylin,

Thank you for reaching out. We do not have any further information to provide other than what is in the post that you already linked from the Agony developer. You are free to either purchase the Unrated Edition at a reduced price or wait to see if they are able to provide free copies at a later date.

Feel free to contact Agony Support for additional information or context as we did communicate with them on the matter as best as we could.

I know this may not be the answer you were looking for but if you need help with something unrelated, please let us know.

I'm still waiting on my answer, but I took their ToS as an example. This reply isn't really the one of a handler imo but more of a bot. I'd keep re-opening the ticket with this response.

Whether they like it or not it's in their ToS..

Info about lower possible price for a bundle is also dubious. As I saw (i think yesterday) even lower (by half) price for this bundle but today it is again higher:).

Anyway I will not buy it for any price. I does not buy second time thing I already bought (as a rule - and to be honest does not care about a game a lot - I got it from bundle with other things, but this rule would be the same even for game I care). Buying second time would be in my eyes just awarding scamer. Also I will stay away from his other titles, unless he will repair this situation in a proper way.

Hi everyone, in a couple of days we plan on releasing a DLC version of UNRATED which will allow Agony owners to download this adult-only expansion without payment.

As we're still waiting for full confirmation from Steam's side, I cannot share all the details, but once it's up, we'll release a full announcement.

If it is a free DLC, then going to the SteamDB page for it will allow you to claim it with the Install button. Valve hides all the stuff from Germany, but doesn't prevent activation like banned games for most countries, so there is always gifts from elsewhere or using SteamDB for free stuff.
