I'm not here to complain and seek moral support like many do in this forum. This is merely a reminder to all of you who've purchased or planning to purchase keys from cheap sites like G2play.net. Now that we've established that here are some facts;

  • I've purchased a Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands key from G2play.net in 2010.

  • I was able to register the game and play using that very same key shortly after my purchase.

  • After Ubisoft's migration to Uplay, the client started asking me for a cd key to launch the game and promptly notified me that the key was in use when I typed it in. I attributed the issue to Uplay's shitty programming.

  • Now 2 years later I decided to give it another try and though the key issue is gone, I can no longer download the game and when I try to play it Uplay launches Steam Community page for Forgotten Sands. Wait, what? I dont even have the game in my Steam library.

So I started talking to Ubi support and after a few back and forths, the venerable Tom from Ubi told me that it's a Steam key and Uplay was trying to launch the game through Steam because of that. No shit Sherlock. The key unfortunately cannot be used to add the game to my library. He also told me to get a refund.

Now I very highly doubt that G2play will give me a refund for a key purchased in 2010 although I didnt talk to them yet. But let this be an example and be very cautious when you are buying from such sites. At least if you are buying Ubisoft keys.

"The Forgotten Sands uses an enhanced version of Ubisoft's digital rights management system (DRM), requiring the user to be connected to Ubisoft's servers in order to play. This new version loads part of the game's content from the server and will not allow the player to continue if a connection to the server does not exist. On 28 June 2010 the DRM was cracked by replacing the code with offline equivalents.[18] The requirement of a permanent internet connection while playing was finally dropped. Versions download directly with the Uplay launcher and with the steam client do not require a constant internet connection to play single-player."

I'll assume the old DRM system only verified that it was a valid key and then allowed you to continue on. When they released UPlay, they probably started deactivating keys that were activated and as such, you were told it was "in use". The Steam version still requires a UPlay account, so I don't think you've made it pass that issue, you just have another hurdle!

Unfortunately I would have to also assume the CD key you bought has been used by someone else and you're probably out of luck considering how long it's been. Your only option is to contact G2Play.net and cross your fingers!

Actually that's what I thought of first, that the key was in use by someone else but Ubi support verified that the key is tied to my account and I've presented them with a proof of purchase. As things stand now I've absolutely no way to download or play the game unless I purchase it again which is a shame.

This may seem dumb, but have you tried to activate the key on Steam?

Of course :) Though as I stated in the original post I was unable to activate it.

You could see if the old non-Steam version is still able to be accessed by adding '-upc_uplay_id 11' to the shortcut to the Uplay launcher.

That's a no-go. Anyway thanks for trying to help but I think this is a lost cause. Unless Ubisoft decides to issue me a new key, I'm stuck with a game in my Uplay library which I cannot play and that is both disappointing and hilarious at the same time.

If it's a Steam key, activate it in Steam and download the game there. When you launch in Steam, it will open a special Steam version of Uplay that will work.

Ubisoft has two Uplays -- one that links to Steam and plays Ubisoft games you redeemed there, and one that runs independently and runs games you bought specifically on Uplay.

Why the f*ck not? If it's Steam key than you can use "Activate a Product on Steam" option, enter your key and get your game in your Steam library.

According to the redeemeable retail keys list you can not activate Prince of Persia unless you buy it directly from Steam. I tried to add it and received the invalid key response. It's a 2010 game and should be redeemeable but the higher powers decreed that it shouldnt be.

My experience with cheap key sites is that if you chat them up with an image and explanation of the error they just give you a free second key.

Thats how I got a free Ded space 2 key for Origin, just by chatting them up and sounding all angry (I had a valid reason).

Cheap key sites usually have better support than steam. Steam usually takes a week to tell you to go fuck yourself and try at your retailer.

True, but it's already been 3 years since I've bought the key. I'm worried that they'll also tell me to go fuck myself. But I'll try my luck.

No harm done by trying. I think G2Play is a rather "legit" cheap key site, compared to others I've faced. Just make sure you convince support you are not lying, they should help you out then. If not with a key (maybe they are out of stock) then with a refund or a "credit" for another game on their page.

It is time for you to download the "free" version of the game and dont feel ashamed because you actually bought the game :)

That depends, did he, in fact, buy the game. G2Play is one of those sketchy key retailers that sell cd keys for suspiciously cheap prices.

I just received a response from G2play and they told me to download the "free" version because it's a "retail key". lol.

G2Play is not an authorized reseller. They buy cheap regional copies and even promote the activation of games through Russian VPNs. But people want cheap games and don't care until something like this happens.
