Steam member since 2010, was constantly active, had no troubles with Steam, no VAC bans or anything. Throughout the years I had dealt with scammers, bots and malicious links, always reporting them to Steam Support. But today I accidently provoked the trigger-happy Steam automatic security system.

So I tried to reach the winners from my giveaways a week ago. I sent the friend requested and (oh God, no) I posted a comment on one's steam profile saying that they had won a giveaway and they should add me. Sure my immediate reaction to that would be comment deletion and profile reporting + blocking. But if you enter giveaways and check the SteamGifts at least once a week, don't you expect you could actually win? Nonetheless, I had sent the games from my steam inventory to their emails (as says under winners' profiles), but got no feedback so I suppose I pushed too hard with steam comment lol.

After contacting Steam Support I am now waiting for their reply, while I cannot send any messages to anyone on Steam. Including one of the winners, who actually accepted my invite, but my messages are instantly blocked and not sent out. Other that that, I've got my Steam Market listings revoked so I guess I will have to post 40 steam cards manually again, bruh.

I guess there is no loyalty towards active users, nor account verification that would protect a person from being mistreated as a scammer, oh well.

How do you guys deal with unresponsive winners of your giveaways, what's the best practice here?

I never had issues like this, but I avoid creating level 0 GAs fearing it.

Other than that hint, just play cool. Try contacting them here, adding them on Steam, and wait the 7 days.

If they don't contact back, just reroll the winner, eventually you'll find someone who'll get it. Patience is the key!

I really dont think this Level 0,1,2 bias we all have, matters. Recently, a winner of Level 3 was causing me such extended difficulty.
I have noticed such issues go away when I post GAs as invite only with SGtools restrictions in the Discussions threads or in particular groups that scrub out the incoming users like Unlucky 7.
Callous Users are seldom present there.

While I agree higher level won't guarantee anything, I still believe statistically it'll yeld less trouble the higher the level.

It might be a bias/common sense and not 100% accurate, as there're other factors that would count more regarding the usage of the website by the person, but CV is the quickiest way to pave a way towards them.

https://www.steamgifts.com/stats/community/users, end of page has number of users per CV... so pretty much 95% of the website is CV 1-, and I'm confident such dataset will be prone to more issues following the website rules and common sense.

Of course, there will be false positives/negatives all around, as you may have found yourself.

And as you suggested, certainly SGtools giveaways are probably even more secure, regardless of CV requirement, as it's a bigger filter and require more effort on both parts.

It's a fact that as higher the level restriction is, as lower are the amount of problems after the end of a GA.

Of course are not each level 0, 1 or 2 user unfriendly, dumb, a asshole or whatever but it give much more users that are greedy, egoistic, demanding, think you owe them something (so more problems when a key is dupe or is restricted without your knowledge) etc..
In the higher levels you have lesser ones that don't understand that a key could be dupe/restricted, if bought in a good shop or not, so lesser problems and in general a more relaxed handling IF some problem appears.
The autojoiners, that only check each 4-7 days if they won something, are mostly under level 4, so this means you don't need to wait till, nearly, the end of the 1 week time till you hear if a problem exist/appear with the key.
And not to forget, the winners with the unactivated wins are mostly low level users. Which means the work with reroll tickets is much higher when you do low level GAs.

What do you do if SG refuses to reroll the winner?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Did this happen to you?

So far I only had to reroll twice, on the same GA, because of regional restriction + DLC of small game, and both winners at first already had it and they asked themselves for reroll.

From the FAQ https://www.steamgifts.com/about/faq

What should I do if the winner of my giveaway has not redeemed their gift, and I'm unable to get into contact with them?
If you contacted the winner of your giveaway on email and Steam over one week ago and they have not yet responded or redeemed any keys or gifts you attempted to send, please contact support to request a new winner. When creating a ticket, we ask you to include data that suggests you made an adequate attempt to contact the winner, such as screenshots of emails, friend requests, or gifts pending on Steam. If the request is approved, a new winner will be generated by the site.

I had a similar situation. I wrote a comment on the winner's profile so that he could claim his prize because he had not been in touch for a long time. ive found lvl 0 users are the most likly to play the games they win and not just 1+ to their account. i try to play 100% of my wins and do it almost every time within a week of winning. that is not the case for most of steam gifts. you will hit scammers from time to time and end up having to wait a week to reroll or the report to go through. but i still default everything to level 0.
twice ive run into users that win and have private accounts, when i friend them they still have private game data so no way to check wins
when i inform them of this they say i don't like your attitude and i no longer want the win, you can reroll. almost word for word

It give scripts that, a lot, steam users use to write 6 or 7 comments each day with the same stuff to get the max. amount of possible comments (i think thats 10k?).
They often post rate4rate requests in groups.

So possible that this scripts can be set to higher amounts too.

It was never that bad for me, but my usual hierarchy of action is: contact via an old giveaway on steamgift>contact via email>contact via steam
I usually can't be bothered with this, so the levels of my giveaways have gone higher and higher with time for this exact reason. Higher level users are more likely to activate their giveaways, I've noticed. It's a pity, because I would love to give everyone a fair chance, but I'm not nice enough to do that at the expense of my own convenience.

Yeah but still, having that one little accident by posting a stupid comment made my account blocked. I've learned my lesson and I partly agree with the steam decision. It's just that I expected some loyalty to a loyal customer of theirs.
If a valid and loyal account goes inactive for a year, then suddenly reappears and starts sending links then yeah, it has been hijacked.
In my case I just got hit by automatic suspension I guess

Remember: people automatically get an email notification to say they have won a game.
If there email account isn’t active isn’t your fault.
I follow these rules:

  1. Never do Steam Gifts. Never do Humble giftlinks. Only gift keys direct on SG.
  2. See step 1.
  3. Set Levels on giveaways - I almost always set to level 3 or above.
  4. Invite only if you really want to weed out the autobots and decepticons.
  5. Don’t be hasty. I will sometimes wait a day or two for users who seem sketchy.
  6. Wait a week after key sent to complain to SG about users who haven’t marked received.
  7. Never contact a user through Steam comments. Always try commenting on an old giveaway they’ve done, ours comment on a giveaway they’ve won. It’s not your fault if the user takes more than 7 days - you are allowed to request a reroll after that.

How do you guys deal with unresponsive winners of your giveaways, what's the best practice here?

Simple, I don't deal with them at all.

SG really should update the outdated FAQ section that still suggests that we need to notify our winners. These days they receive a mail from SG, notifying them about their win. Anything beyond that shouldn't be our concern. Not to mention a duty,

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Haven't been on SG for a while, just returned recently. I guess you're right here

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This.

They should really rewrite this FAQ section:

What should I do if the winner of my giveaway has not redeemed their gift, and I'm unable to get into contact with them?

If you contacted the winner of your giveaway on email and Steam over one week ago and they have not yet responded or redeemed any keys or gifts you attempted to send, please contact support to request a new winner. When creating a ticket, we ask you to include data that suggests you made an adequate attempt to contact the winner, such as screenshots of emails, friend requests, or gifts pending on Steam. If the request is approved, a new winner will be generated by the site.

Just wait for the period of 7 days, if they don't redeem their win, simply request a new winner. The winner already had enough chances to be notified of their win (SG notification + email), it's not your job to track them down if they go awol for a week!

If you're feeling generous you can wait more than seven days and see if they come back on the site, but my advice is to never contact them yourself, sadly that can only backfire on you as you found out..

Oh and I just remembered, to further prove this point; Steam recently updated their guidelines (like a few days ago) about permitted online conduct on their platform:

https://steamcommunity.com/games/593110/announcements/detail/3695810094442050670

Specifically they added a new clause here:

Examples of such prohibited behavior include: posting advertisements; running contests; gambling; buying or selling Steam accounts; selling content, gift cards, or other items; and begging.

So you posting a comment on someone's profile telling them they won a giveaway can be interpreted as falling under this part "posting advertisements; running contests" (or even "spamming" or "scamming" because that's what a lot of scammers do, i.e post a comment that you won something with a link you need to follow to claim your prize). So to be safe, I would just avoid commenting on steam profile altogether.

Some mods demand that you contact the winner by your own or they don't reroll.

Because of that i write the winner on day 7, wait 1h, and make than the reroll ticket. Was never a problem this way with the mods that demand a contact try :D

True, FAQ could be updated. We had guideline update, but not everything is reflected in FAQ.

But it's 7 days from when creator makes game available to winner, not 7 days of GA closing. It's properly worded in guideline but not FAQ.

These days they receive a mail from SG, notifying them about their win.

Emails are not automatic, they must be enabled in accounts settings. SG can't force people to receive emails.

Also, 7 days count from the time gift / key was sent by the creator, not when GA ended. If creator added winner on Steam 6 days after GA ended to "deliver" game, and send re-roll request on 7th as "winner unresponsive" it's an obvious problem with creator, not winner. That's why creator must prove they tried to deliver the game.

Best is to write somewhere on SG (like old GA) to show that you tried to contact and deliver.

That would be their choice then, with the alternative that users check SG independently for any wins if they refuse to receive emails.
I really don't see any reason at all why people providing gifts should be responsible for anything else but providing the games.

Also, 7 days count from the time gift / key was sent by the creator, not when GA ended. If creator added winner on Steam 6 days after GA ended to "deliver" game, and send re-roll request on 7th as "winner unresponsive" it's an obvious problem with creator, not winner.

Regarding the timing: Simply send that email right when the GA creator unlocks the key, not when the game was won. Or maybe send two, one for each event. Problem solved.

The sg intern notification for the win are a red symbol and as soon as the key got sended the symbol is a red blinking one.
So the winners see, at any time they visit sg, whats happen.

And yes, to be forced to run behind the winners that they please please please take their wins is bullshit but i don't expect that this ever change.

Like guy forgot that he could win here something and took long time to check if site is legit and I'm not trying to scam him. And then when he finally agreeded to activate the key, he told me that it's invalid. I was like wtf? I copied key from sg and tried it on my account... and I activated game on my account xD Luckily I had another key for the same game xD
So I basically wasted about one week and one additional key on somebody who wasn't able to properly do ctrl+c / ctrl+v

Normaly are the ones you must run behind the autojoiner users (with their bot farms) that don't care, don't value the money you spend for them, mostly don't know the word thanks etc..
And all this comes on top to the run behind them to, please please please, take their wins.

To avoid such stress, plus autojoiner, multiaccounter, cheater, exploiter and ultra leechers, do high(er) level GAs. I recommend 5+

It's an automatic steam feature trying to stop all the people who message you trying to steal your acc or items. I know that's not your intention, but you're caught in the misfire. Sure, it's possible but in the end the gifter, that spend money and time to do the GAs, send the keys etc., should write than emails on top.

Sounds for me VERY wrong.

And not to speak about the fact that some stranger have than your emailadress that he could use for "whatever he wants".
As example when he don't like a comment from you, give this email adress to a spam sending site etc..

A contact on sg, with a comment in one of the old GAs of that user (if he ever created a public one), do the same job with lesser effort and risk AND still that is a bullshit requirement and should be kicked.
If the winner isn't willing/able to take his win, his lose, end of the story.

It is of course a other thing when you know the winner since a longer time and know that is unusual for him. So expect that he could be ill, in the clinic etc. and not that he autojoin and haven't checked his wins in 1 week.

They won on SG, they get it on SG.

  • as soon as I verify they don't already have it in their library and there aren't any recent non-activated wins.
which is within a few hours of the GA ending.

One week later, and I take screenshots of me contacting them here on SG with 0 response and send them to Support for a reroll.

If some winners don't care enough to even click a few times to get a free game, you shouldn't either.

That's not a comment that I would have left.

I would have gone with something like this instead:

Your entry for the game TITLE won on SG. Congrats.
Feel free to claim it at your earliest convenience. It will expire on DATE.

You don't ask them to add you or to do this or that.
You don't send them a FR yourself either.
Just state the facts and let them handle it.

And again, you shouldn't need to do any of that.
Because the winner gets notified by email anyway.
Out of common sense and, well, decency, they might wanna check once a week the result of what they tried winning.
5 minutes or less in 168 hours is too much for some winners now?

I would bet each of these words is a flag, and you've used all 4, so an algorithm would insta-block an account based just on that statement:
won, congrats, claim, free

Even your helpful reminder of when it expires would read an urgency tactic from a scammer.

Just my opinion.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Except one message like this won't trigger the system.
How do I know? Because I had to contact at least two winners before by leaving a message on their Steam profile.
I never got flagged.

Each on a separate occasion, mind you, so never more than one message at the same time.

And you know what? After the GA is rerolled, I remove the message I left on their profile because there's no point in leaving a reminder for a win that they forfeited and is not a win anymore.
That keeps you safe even further.

OP probably got flagged by the system not because he left one message but two.
Also one or both winners or visitors of their profiles quite possibly reported him.

Feel free to use the wording you're most comfortable with. But saying with feigned certainty that this wording would cause a triggered system is a bit too speculative on your part.

You can look in their wins, when they commented there something like a thanks you are able to write them there a comment that they should see.

The chance that it bring something is anyway ultra slim.
I had in all the years, with a lot of GAs, one winner that reacted after i wrote him about his win, all other ones, obviously, don't wanted their win.
So a lot of wasted lifetime in the end. Minimize it as much as possible.

The way I try and run my giveaways, I always make sure that what I'm giving away has enough time on the key that I can reroll at least once or twice if needed so I can relax if the first winner takes a week or longer.
I also like to make my giveaways Level 1+ and since users need to make at least 1 giveaway to reach level 1, I can try to reach them through that giveaway. If I can't access it for whatever reason, I check a giveaway that my winner has won and commented on so I can notify them through that comment.
If that's not accessible (and in the past I've been guilty of doing this first), I'll send them an E-mail a few days before reroll but reaching out through Steam is like the last resort I never want to go through for reasons like above.
I never reach out with more than 1 message and if they miss it, a reroll might bring the gift to someone who might have been wanting that game more or had more time for it.
