That's right, the legends John Romero and Adrian Carmack (not to be confused with John Carmack) are working together on a new FPS called Blackroom. And they're asking 700,000$ on Kickstarter for it.

Romero is going to create all of the levels and Carmack will of course be in charge of the graphics. The game will have singleplayer that should take around 10 hours to beat and several multiplayer modes which will be supported with dedicated servers. They also said the game will be moddable and that people will be able to create their own levels.

Needless to say they want it to feel old school. That means; very violent, quick movement, strafe-jumping, circle-strafing, rocket jumping and all that fun stuff. The setting is interesting as well:

"BLACKROOM takes place at one of the world’s leading tech companies, HOXAR. HOXAR has created a technology that allows people to be anywhere at any time, creating fully-realized holographic worlds that are indistinguishable from reality, all inside of a giant black room.

Finding early favor amongst military and police organizations, BLACKROOM continues to be prized for its life-like ability to train specialists against the horrors of war and urban terror. Even commercial clients have lined up to develop HoloSims that might terrify adults and delight children. Now, though, simulations are being twisted and warped into each other, and blending with something even more sinister.

In the single-player campaign, you step into the shoes of Dr. Santiago Sonora, Chief hNode Engineer at HOXAR. When testing of their new, leading-edge Predictive Memory technology reveals troubling anomalies that blend the real world with the virtual, you’re sent in with both Boxel and gun to investigate and are swept across a staggering and dangerous array of simulations."

What do you guys think?

InB4 people will confuse Adrian with John.

Well, I'm moderately optimistic. But will not pre-order, unless some price bug happens :P

That Adrian Carmack's name will only bring money as long as people don't realise his first name is not John, and that Romero's last succesful game was made… 19 years ago I think?

Romero has been involved with a lot of more recent good games but they end up being canceled.

Just check out Severity for instance.

A cancelled game isn't really a succesful game, isn't it? i know he had something to do with the Gauntlet remake and it ended up nice, but that's about it. His success since Quake came from his mobile game company and that's about it.
I'm not saying this project will be DoA, but neither names are an actual guarantee for anything. We are not in 1996 any more.

Yeah I suppose not. But still I wouldn't count them out.

P.S. Quake isn't even that good. Red Faction is a bajillion times better. ;D

Well, Red Faction had five years over Quake. And in the end it ended up as a niché title; that destructible environment mechanics never caught up, even today when game engines could in theory support it (but that would ruin the corridor-like gameplay).

GeoMod was so amazing at the time though, right?

Locked door? Pfft rocket tunnel around that shit lol

Funny part: I could never actually play it, only seen it. At that time I had a Voodoo 3 and it couldn't run the game, and when years later I got a GeForce 4, I already forgot its existence.

Man, it was literally jaw-dropping the first time I played it. Even still today the story and immersion is great -- almost in the same manner System Shock 1 & 2 still are.

It was even good on consoles, sucks you didn't get a chance to play it when it came out.

Now it's nothing special to be able to break environments but it was definitely the pioneer.

I am not sure it's going to be just the two of them, only that Romero will be designing levels and that Carmack will be the art director. Expected release date is somewhere in 2018.

"Carmack will of course be in charge of the graphics"
I hope that means the graphical assets, not the game engine running them.
(Adrian Carmack used to be one of the lead artists for iD, John Carmack's the brains behind the idTech engine)

They will be using Unreal Engine 4. Carmack will be art director, so I assume that means he'll make concept arts and boss people around on how everything should look.

Romero was answering questions about the game on his Twitch channel some hours ago. Since the game doesn't really have any meat on its bones right now, as far as I understood, most of his answers were about what they'd "like" to do, and the kinds of ideas they have for the game. Someone in chat asked him why he thinks this game is going to be any better than Daikatana, and he started reading it out, but then just went on to something else. It's a fair enough question, really. Sure, you can link him to Doom and assume, on that basis, that this game should be just as good, but that game had many other people behind it, to perhaps steer his ideas in the right direction. Who knows what this game is going to turn out to be like. I guess there's no way to know. Gonna have to wait for the first gameplay videos.

There's a Zero Punctuation video on Daikatana, which pretty much mirrors my opinion when it comes to Romero as a game dev.

P.S. - His hair and hand movements were majestic af during the stream. Just had to put that out there.

Oh, I see, they have a very precise idea of what kind of game they want.

I'll pass, I don't want to be anyone's bitch anymore.

whoops, meant John Romero. If it was John Carmack I'd be more impressed.

Daikatana is what happens when there's a lack of self-control / discipline / managerial control. Nothing that has happened in the interim indicates there will be a significant difference this time around (especially considering, with Kickstarter, he won't have investors/bosses breathing down his neck)

Ever since Daikatana Romero's rep was rather tarnished imho. I have my doubts that he'd be considered "among the world's top game designers", as his Kickstarter bio claims.
But hey, I certainly wouldn't mind if they'd manage to create something great. I wish them best of luck.

They have absolutely nothing concrete to show... I wait until it's out, I suspect this will be one more failed kickstarter or half-assed project that bite more than it could chew...

I want bit more from my money that "Hey old FPS were cool! We want to make game like them, give us your money!" Without showing any sort of demo or design documentation...
