Diablo? No, this is one of the archetypes of roguelikes. Diablo drew inspiration from this, not the other way around.

The closest equivalent you might be familiar with is Dungeons of Dredmor.

I used to play it all the time, but not lately. I can't even remember my high score. All I remember is that I was on level 32 or something and I died from food poisoning.
