I actually think dogs don't like me too, 2 separate occasions where I went to my friend's house with a dog. They always barked at me (and not my other friends) when I was near them, then their grandmother would scold me for disturbing the dog.

Well, it would actually be moving civilization forwards and potentially also bring in tons of metals that are rare or expensive on Earth once we get things moving. It's an investment in humanity's resources and future. Having the American flag and a colony on Mars before the Chinese couldn't hurt either, of course.
Can you say that about healthcare policies or whatever politicians argue about? People need to see the future more, instead of only the present.

I guess that's why the future in space travel will mostly belong to private industry, and the government will probably mostly use space for military purposes eventually, kind of like aircraft. Still, couldn't hurt to give some bonus cash to the people putting men on Mars, right?
