I'd say making sure you have thorough map knowledge is key, and then after that you just need to play and play to keep your practice up

I haven't played Compe yet due to sucky net and PC. I'm all casual for now. Can't imagine I'd be any good when I do start compe.

Limit your map pool to a few (3-4) and grind those, find 1-2 positions on said maps (ct) and try to play those the most , spectate better players playing those positions if required. Don't deathmatch, there are better workshop maps to practice your aim, others for smokes,flashes etc (a few: overpass,inferno,etc training, recoil master, aim botz, training_aim), boomeo duel servers are decent as well, the ranks are a bit higher there though and you might get discouraged.
