http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/01/18/alienware-x51-is-a-console-sized-gaming-pc/

ill give you what i think are the highlights of this article:
All components can be upgraded
small form factor machine
customisably LED lighting

the negative:
three different specs currently available – £699, £849 and £949
also it would be amazing if steam released their controller gui for steamtv

The part i like is this can be the start of small form factor "console" style pc cases. there are mini pc's already but this might be easily modded to put this console in other cases and make it super exclusive to have.
its very expensive for what you are getting i believe but i will have to look into the specs.

I want to look at each spec and compare the prices individually on newegg. if someone can do that and post here it will be much appreciated.

I would like to hear some thoughts because if this was priced just a little bit cheaper in addition to the steamtv interface thats not released yet then would console gamers make the leap over?

High end and GTX 555 should never be used in the same sentence.

wth would be the point? Spend a premium for 1.) The namebrand, and 2.) the form factor and you end up with medium settings for the price of a top-tier tower. 900 US can get you a premiere set up.

This. There are a lot of people out there selling overpriced prefabs. Alienware is likely the biggest and certainly the most well-known offender. I will never buy prefab. The only thing my machine lacks is a little more RAM and another video card crossfired with the one I have. If I can ever stop giving my disposable income to Steam, it will be second to none.

Meh I'd rather have one good card than Crossfire or SLI with 2 or 3 cards, just cause I've heard of many things being unstable when using SLI/Crossfire. Once games and programs seem to have SLI/Crossfire support across the board I might go for it, but until then..

Why would we want console gamers to "make the leap" in the first place? It's because of console gamers that PC gaming is in such a terrible state. The unsophisticated tastes of console gamers are directly linked to multi-platform releases of well-established PC game series (e.g. The Elder Scrolls series, the Fallout series, the Thief series, etc.) whose multi-platform "sequels" are garbage.

The reason you should want them to "make the leap" would be to change their thoughts on gaming, and therefore change their attitudes towards the PC and Console gaming markets, bringing PC gaming back to the front. If you simply exclude Console gamers then console gaming will keep growing, resulting in more of this so called "garbage".

I don't get your argument at all. If those console gamers were truly the reason behind the "terrible state" of PC gaming... then you would want to change their minds so that you could "fix" this terrible state of affairs

Should I remind you that it's thanks to console games that we have PC games nowadays?

Let's not be a bunch of elitists. I agree that some multi-platform-oriented games have been lazily ported to PC with no thoughts made about button placement or menu interface (cough Sonic Generations cough), but that's the game company's fault, not the platform's.

Saw this a bit earlier...and outside of good sales/rebates, you basically can't build a computer with the same specs and at least near the same size under $700. Seriously, try building a miniITX computer with the same specs/functionality and a case anywhere near that size, and getting it under $700 - and that includes $100 for Windows 7.

The other, higher-end versions, however - you're paying a bit extra for the form factor.

Personally, I like it. Yeah, SFF PC's are a specialty market, and as a result, the prices for buying/building them is usually a decent bit more expensive than regular-sized PC's, and that extra cost usually comes in the form of expensive cases and equally expensive PSU's to go with them (seeing as most cases require specific types/sizes), along with specific low-profile CPU coolers, etc. It's perfectly fine that not everybody cares for SFF PC's, but to say there's no point in getting it is pure opinion.

If I had one bad thing to say about the X51, it'd be the maximum 330W power supply when the case can support up to 12" cards...and unless you swap out the CPU for a low-power one or something, you won't be putting anything like a GTX580 in there (and even then, it'd be cutting it pretty close on the power draw).

nice views and i didnt catch the power supply. I only had to worry about power supplies once and im glad thats over.

Im also intrigued as the person below me. I think this would have been a perfect pc if it was bundled with some sort of controller/windows interface.

its not 700USD, its 700 British Pound. £699 = 1085 U.S. dollars.

It's $700 in the US. Look at Alienware's site if you don't believe me.

Hmm, at first I was intrigued. Still am really, they are nice machines after all. However, I would have to imagine that upgrading parts in such a small box would be a real pain in the ass, if even possible. Not really worth it to me once I consider that. For desktop PC's I would rather have a nice big box, with room to do what I need to do inside there.

Also Alienware computers are far overpriced for what you get, no matter what the computer. It's paying for the name more than the parts.

The $700 model isn't overpriced. At all. The other models? Yeah, by as much as ~$200 in the case of the high-end model. And most other Alienware computers are overpriced to - M14x particularly; however, some, like the M17x, have unique feature combinations. You're never going to find a 17" laptop with the option for 3D, HDMI /input/, and keyboard backlighting all in one.

And the X51 is as modular and easy to work with as possible, apparently; swapping out the GPU, for example, is basically just taking off a side panel, what looks to be loosening some screws, and then sliding the card up.

ITT: PC elitists bitching about consoles because mummy and daddy wouldn't buy them one. Seriously, GTFO if you can't shut your fucking mouths without some basic knowledge of why consoles are good for gaming and why you're more of a fucking idiot for thinking that console gamers are all uncivilised rubes than even the people who buy Call of Duty only and call themselves a hardcore gamer. Calling games dumbed down solely because consoles exist is one of the most ignorant things you could possibly say.
