This actually looks very solid, exactly like FF:A actually.
How necessary are the DLCs? I looked at DLC pack 1, and it looks mostly like starter kits and potions. Does it make the game easier, or is it required for certain classes? Also, there looks to be a wide selection of varied weapons, but how about armor? Does that change based on equipped gear or just class?
It's one I might pick up this steam sale if it dips just a little bit more. (dat 75%)

DLCs are unnecessary, all they give you can be acquired in the game. They can be game breaking in the sense you are OP from the start with those items, so you have to know how to hold yourself back by not using them (or selling the items). What they do is give you a healthy boost if you want to enjoy the story rather than the fights (which the game is 80% about)
There is absolutely not character visual upgrade though, it is always the same sprite for each character.
I really love the game and have sunk about 70 hours in the hardest difficulty, only reaching about half of generation 3 of 5.

I only played Agarest : Generation of War, but from what I know and read , playing in the release order would be the best way. There is no direct link between the games, and it's almost always better to start from the oldest game, to the latest more polished game with more features.
Of course, I'd say all if the others are at least as good as the 1st.

the banner saga its really awesome

Fallen Enchantress doesn't really look too appealing. It's got large scale elements that I want to avoid (a lot of people are saying civ-like in reviews, I agree.) The units look focused around a single hero character, and army style "grunt" units that have no personality. Not my cup of tea.
The banner saga is definitely a game I want to pick up eventually. However, does it have gear that does more than just add stats? Armor skins change w/ gear? I've looked into it before and I don't remember seeing anything major.

indeed on 30th June, i recommend it very much.
Then there is Age of Decadence -very very challenging game in which u will prb die alot more than in DS. Its still in development but 3/4 of the game is already available in early access.
Temple of elemental evil is also very good turn based game - weak story but very good character stuff and fighting.

"Gather your party and get ready for a new, back-to-the-roots RPG adventure! Discuss your decisions with companions; fight foes in turn-based combat; explore an open world and interact with everything and everyone you see. Join up with a friend to play online in co-op and make your own adventures with the powerful RPG toolkit. "
Ironically, I bought it BECAUSE it is turn-based combat.

That feeling when you kill level 7 orcs with only level 5 team is priceless.

If you never played the first Dragon Age. I would recommend it. It is real time but you can pause game play and dictate the action. You can also create behaviors for all the characters. (example: health = 45% : use potion. etc.) Dragon Age 2 was apparently a button masher. But the 3rd one coming out in the near future gives you the option for strategy again. You may want to consider looking into that.
That was the last game close to being turn based with characters that had gear (drops) involved that I enjoyed a lot.

Played them both, half way through dragon age 2. Smash R is accurate for anything but a mage, apparently. Mages get away with mashing 1-6 instead.
Dragon age: Inquisition is on my must play list, however it's far more of an action RPG, with very very little pause and go strategy.

Shadowrun Returns sounds close. Turn based fighting, armor changes the look of the character, it's more urban fantasy than medieval though. And it's a little on the short side, but you can dig through the Steam Workshop and find quite a few fan made missions.

Much, much more. You definitely want to get the expansion, though. It makes the game that much better.
Comment has been collapsed.
It adds both, but mostly it adds flexibility, detail, new options, and expanded gameplay. Basically, it fills out the entire game, making it feel more "complete." If you have any interest in doing the user-made mods/campaigns, it's a "must have." Otherwise, it just makes the entire game more enjoyable.

King's bounty really doesn't sit well with me. Very little customizability on the characters and a total lack of armor/style control.
Expeditions is a game I've heard a lot about, I may pick it up. It's fairly cheap on current sale, and it's been bundled a few times now.

Disgaea. Definitely.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was one of my favourite games I ever played. I bought a psp for FFT:TWOTL. Great game. Then I tried out Disgaea and it just completely blew FFT out of the water. Disgaea is the ultimate Turn based/Grid Strategy RPG. If you don't mind some sillyness in your games then Disgaea is the game you're looking for. You have TONS of options, hundreds of hours of gameplay (or even thousands if you're a completionist), lots of fun and pure awesomeness.
Try getting the remakes if you can, usually for portable device (psp, psvita), they offer the same game plus a lot more content than the original. The original ones are good too ofcourse.
I've been playing Aerena regularly lately. Cool game, it's nice! And free to play. Give it a shot!
Just get Disgaea. It's worth getting a vita for. Or a psp, those are cheap now. And just get the Prinny games with it as well. And the Disgaea VN...
Yeah, I'm a pretty big fan. Just get it. Your life will be complete.

How good is the character customization, and squad customization? I take it all of the characters but your own come pre-defined, or can you customize them as well? How are weapons/armor handled? Are they stats or do they show up on a character? The game is appealing, but mobile/handheld isn't super appealing. Emulators will probably be used.

hahahaha...how good is....Disgaea...Sorry, I can't stop dying of laughter. Well let's see...depending on which one you get, you could have as few as 37 classes (17 human, 20 monster classes in the very first disgaea game) to choose from, with 6 tiers in each. Since you go into item world to power up your items, and you essentially have infinite freedom there in how you do it, you can tailor your gear to exactly what you want. Weapons and Armor are just stats iirc, and all the characters come pre-defined as far as looks go. Disgaea 3 and 4 have a thing called Class World though, where you can go into a character the same way you go into an item and level up their affinities. Like a Witch with 200% INT affinity wearing a staff that gives 20000 INT would gain 40000 INT from that staff.

The PSP version of FFT has those annoying slowdowns, which made it unplayable for me. Years after its release someone finally released a CFW plugin that fixes them.

Shining Force II (and 1)

Excellent turn/tile based RPG. Weapons are equipped for stats if I recall correctly, but the game was a LOT of fun. I played through it twice when I was younger on Sega Genesis and once again about 5 years ago.

X-Com: UFO Defense has characters change appearance depending on armor/weapons.
Sorry, I don't really know any other Turn-based RPG's that really change your characters' appearance. It's fairly common for different weapons to be present, but armor really doesn't change at all in the games I've played.

Fallout Series and Arcanum absolutely for classics. Avernum is another one that I discovered a little while ago when I bought Avernum : Escape From The Pit on sale. As far as I can tell, this game specifically, it's a modern-attempt at an old-style dungeon-crawler-ish game. I'd check it out before you buy it, since I'm terrible at descriptions, apparently. It's a lot of fun, though.

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together is one of my favorite games of all-time, it's similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, and there's been a lot of debate between which is better. In my opinion, LUCT is more complex, has more replay value, and is more difficult than FFT. You should check it out if you enjoyed FFT, you'll probably like LUCT.

I've been really enjoying Blackguards. 36 hours clocked and I'm still at chapter 3 (out of 5 I think). The game is very challenging and the maps are very interactive (I liked this a lot. Traps, buttons to activate things, objects can be moved/thrown to block movement...). I don't understand 5 hourss thing, because the game gets better and better.
My main complain is the fixed party. I'd enjoyed it more if there'd be, let's say, 7 characters to choose from for you party of 5, so you can customize it. And the second chapter can get a bit tedious (as I said, the game is quite challenging, and in this chapter you have to do 3 battles in a row (3 times, for a total of 9 battles) without being able to heal in between).

I'm not sure if it's the kind of game you're looking for, but check out Grotesque Tactics. It's a parody and very tongue-in-cheek, but it has a lot of the things you mentioned.

You totally should give The Banner Saga a try. If truly you believe a TRPG must have items with stats (à la FFT) then it might not be your thing, but this game is a beauty and offers a real nice tactical gameplay.
The thing you might not like could be the caravan element, where you have to keep your army fed, along with the many events that you stumble upon.

The game also just received a large patch which corrected many of the things that made people give it bad reviews (mainly some nasty bugs causing crashes and UI problem and the last fight.
The gameplay is very solid and can be quite harsh if you make a wrong decision.

I'm looking for a grid/hex based fantasy/medieval RPG game to play. Something similar to Final Fantasy Tactics (and Advanced, Advanced 2) and X-Com: EU/EW. However, I want character models to develop with their armor/weapons. What I mean by that is I want armor to be more than stats. Squad/team of 3 to 8 controllable and customizable characters is a HUGE plus.
I've been looking at Blackguards, but it seems that game drops all things good about it about 5 hours in. Divinity: Original Sin looks really interesting, but only the first ~20 hours (generous) of gameplay are currently in-game. Other than that it's wait-until-we-feel-like-it because "early access."
So these two games are out because I don't feel like paying $40 for 5 hours, and I don't enjoy the idea of early access-ing an RPG.
ANYWAYS I was hoping the community here would be able to help me find a game to fill my wants. What have you played? And how would you rate it?
