As other projects have, or are, renaming outdated terms, I suggest SG rename 'blacklist' (e.g. to 'blocklist') and possibly whitelist too.

And for those that consider these terms not racist, this comment sums it up for me:

Words should not only be interpreted by how you think is sensible, but also by how it would be perceived by others.

Rename blacklist (and possibly whitelist)?

We gonna change the wording for white, black, and grey hat hackers as well now?
This is just the first thing that came to mind so there must be more examples.

And where would this end? Would the world force the symbol of jing-jang to be altered as well?

Black is the darkest color, the result of the absence or complete absorption of visible light. It is an achromatic color, a color without hue, like white and gray.[1] It is often used symbolically or figuratively to represent darkness, while white represents light.[2] Black and white have often been used to describe opposites such as good and evil, the Dark Ages versus Age of Enlightenment, and night versus day. Since the Middle Ages, black has been the symbolic color of solemnity and authority, and for this reason is still commonly worn by judges and magistrates, including the justices of the U.S. Supreme Court.[2]

Race was never part of the discussion when this ideology was created and as such race shouldn't have anything to do with it, if a person sees a race problem in it then the problem lies by you.

White and Black are like Hot and Cold. Depending on inflection and use, they can be positive or negative. here are certain terms we will forever have due to the human condition.
Black is often looked at as bad, because of the many deaths that have happened in the dark. While white is good because of it's suggestion of cleanliness and sun light.

All that said, i am mostly european, but have rarely seen any "white" people in my life. Just lots of beige to pink skinned people, and then there are the tons of gorgeous skin colors running from light brown on to ebony, which is the only "black" skin I know of, and I rarely see any of them.

I think ebony skinned people are the most beautiful, but maybe that's because I grew up seeing a mottle of veins just beneath the surface of my skin, that just looks kinda weird.

All this is an example of how, without hate, you can discuss perceptions of skin color without being racist in the slightest.

Seems like this discussion got outer hands and senseless pretty quick. What can one expect? This is most likely a predominantly white community.
Most people don't understand, that those discussions are not about, if this term was created in an offensive way or if that one person uses it in such. It is still about people who are getting offended by using the term and had experienced negative usage of the term.
I am not offended by the term, but still can understand why it could be good to change it. Why are people always bother about such things? The world won't end, if we evolve our language...

You realize, that this "Why are people always bother about such things?" can be used in the other way around, right? how can they be offended by words, which never had racist meaning? This whole situation is getting out of hand, and needs to be stopped, before we get to the point that cant even think, cause most of the things are offensive to somebody...

It is about what people make out of it. Most terms were not created in a way to be used by racists, but they are.
What I meant was: It won't hurt me (and most likely nobody else) to change the term for steamgifts. On the other hand it could make some people feel better. So why putting so much energy in holding on to something really not that important?

I would say it would hurt in the long run... If we bow to the pressure now, what will they find offensive tomorrow, or the day after? I am really questioning these snowflakes... Saw a nice meme on 9gag a couple weeks back. It said something like: "we raised a generation on South Park and Family guy, how can they be offended by so many things?" and i really feel this, more and more... So no, I would say I would change it... and would be really happy if I could see who voted yes on this poll as I have only 53 users on my BL, would love to expand it... :D

On the other hand, I can use almost any word to offend someone. Example? I can tell someone "hammerhead", that means hammers should be forbidden and the word itself erased from history? Nope. The problem is not in terms itself, but in peoples who weaponized them to get famous.

I'm ready to get to some blacklists!

Offending one random person with a random word is something different as getting your whole life defined by the color of your skin, your gender or the fact that you can't walk, talk or something else...
But you are right: weaponizing terms is the problem. But we know how people are...
I can do the same ;)

This is pretty much my position. I'm not offended by the terms (though many here assume I would be).
I consider SG to be a pretty inclusive community. Interesting how this is playing out.

I’m gonna say to you exactly the same thing I told the transgirl that ended up saying that “all cops deserved a brick to their head” on one of her threads

Not sure that's relevant, unless you are saying that my suggesting changing a word is equivalent to citing violence?

1 - quit thinking everyone that disagrees with you is trying to make the community less inclusive. You’re a human being like the rest of us and you can be wrong.
2 - this is a worldwide community with thousands of people from several different countries and the most diverse background. At least try to respect that and minimally respect different points of views instead of throwing everyone into a mentally prefabricated group of homogeneous people. It can only do you good.

How did you come to conclude these points? I think you've read way more into what I wrote. I've not made a statement about those that have a different opinion or made generalisations about this community. And I've somehow disrespected those that have a different point of view?

Language is what people use to communicate, it is fluid, it changes overtime. If awareness is raised that a particular word or phrase is offensive, and enough people choose to stop use that word or phrase then it falls out of favour. New words (some also possibly offensive) will appear. This is how language changes.

If people ask for change, and that change happens (possibly through government action) how can that be authoritarian?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not "the people" who wants a change, is a little group of snowflakes who are offended for everything.

And trying to impose his thinking to the rest of us is authoritarian and fascist.

Reminds me of this joke a French comedian was telling in the 80ies:
A school bus driver, who is getting tired of the kids fighting in the bus because they come from two different neighborhoods gets up and say "alright! I'm tired of this BS! From now on, there is no black, there is no white! Everyone is blue! Alright? Now Light blue kids, in the front. Dark blue kids, to the back!"

He got a lot of bad press for that joke from people who evidently missed the point. He was just trying to illustrate the fact that racism is not about color, it's about perception. Words only have the meaning we give them. As long as we don't change the perception, words won't matter much.

Yep some people have no chill for jokes on them, I mean is J. D. from Scrubs a racist because he makes "black" jokes about Turk? ;) but anyway it would solve the "problem" that they want to change all the names for things which are totally unrelated to them like blacklist. No one thinks of dark skinned people when they read blacklist or black magic or whatever 🤷

And with the behavior of the protestors the last few days they basically achieve the exact opposite of what they intend. I have some nice friends which are e. g. Tamil and Indian (which are also dark skinned) and I never cared about the color of the skin of someone as it's only something in your genes like also eye or hair color but with robbing shops or vandalizing sculptures of people by writing racist on them who didn't even know that there are dark skinned people in their time is just ridiculous. Every person in older ages where racist as it was necessary to survive to put your own kind over others back then and therefore is a big part of us. In a multi cultural world like ours it's outdated but it's difficult to get it out of our minds as like I said it was necessary for such a long time.

But back to the topic of the words: Me as a left hander could also feel offended by the other meanings of left and right and basically the names for the hands even are based on that meaning. So basically I use the wrong hand because the other would be the right one. But I couldn't care less how it's named. Also no one would call jokes about blondes, which are well known here, racist. They are basically blonde = stupid.

So enough written and I bet I get some bad people list entries for this but who cares :) Have a nice day!

Fun fact: when any 1 person is offended by something majority does, making the majority change its mind in not the only solution. It's hard to think of it, I know, but maybe changing 1 person's mind will be easier than changing hundreds/thousands/millions of minds. So my solution to this problem: stop being offended by something majority does. - it's faster, easier, and actually brings results in stopping being offended.

How dense you've got to be to associate "blacklist" and "whitelist" with race ? Go to a doctor please, this is not normal.

To be honest up to this point at no moment something this idiotic has crossed my mind. These two terms are globally understood and used concepts without any correlation towards race. So I do whole-heartedly hope this is a troll post

And how dare Jon Bokenkamp create such a racist and offensive show as Blacklist. I think we should demand they rename the show to "Blocklist" and if they dont we should loot Hollywood huh ?

Edit : talking seriously - only racists are going to interpret name "blacklist" as somehow offensive to black people. And we cant bend to their will and change all our lives because of that. Racists are and will be among us. With some idiotic name changes we wont abolish racism - it will disappear after 2 or 3 generations. Is it really hard to understand that ? People dont change their minds - racists stay racists and everyone who fights this SJW fight is only ruining their own sanity and getting on nerves of everyone. As I said previously - BLM wont suddenly make a racist think they are wrong and even less so changing "blacklist" to "blocklist" wont change someones mind. Fight the fights that actually are there - police brutality, sex trade, rape, slavery where it still exists, world hunger, homelessness.

you are right, there are some people who areposting arguments but most comments are just like "Get fucked OP", "Grow some thicker skin. Problem solved." even a person that made a topic about women beeing treated in a bad way is making jokes (or beeing sarcastic, what ever you want to call it). in the end most people are not willing to discuss and even many of the ones who argue, might not read other comments so they just make some monologues

Honestly, it's the worst part of internet and I don't see any other way of dealing with it than just ignoring them. Really I don't get a point of comments that doesn't add value to discussion, either supporting or not. You watched something interesting on youtube and want learn more from comments? Oh, how silly, you can only read unfunny jokes in multiples copies. Or maybe you read something controversial on facebook and want check out more arguments in comments? No way, you will mostly find coments like "@Name1, @Name2, look at this!", or "You are all just dumb!" eventually "thats the point, dumbasses!". People want their attention even if they don't have anything interesting to say.

Disclaimer: I do not want to offend anyone.
Does it mean we need change name of "black" color to "block" color cause somebody mix meanings?
I don't find racism good but I also don't find reverse discrimination good. Skin color should not affect decision making, isn't it? Diversity is a key to survive and progress, I guess, it's like solving engineering tasks.

I also belong to another minority and it's hard and sometimes dangerous in my country. Logic and science is our solution/escape(not sure about words meaning) I guess.

I would be happy to hear about mistakes in my opinion.
