My IRL cake day is coming up soon, so I decided to do GAs that end on that day. Levels are 2-5.
I'm tired of quizes, ciphers and all that crap so I decided to steal idea of some old puzzle.
There was the guy named Epstein or something like that. He invented time, space, quantum physics and the zebra puzzle. Only top 98% could solve it.

Anyway. There are 5 guys who live next to each other on the same street. They all have first name, middle name, last name, distinctive feature, pet and favorite hobby.

  1. The guy with a middle name Hunter is next to the guy with a first name David.
  2. The owner of the tiny octopus is exactly to the right of the tall stature guy.
  3. The guy obsessed with the Large Hadron Collider has a last name Vale.
  4. The guy doing oversized clothing on a spare time has a middle name Warren.
  5. The guy with a last name Smith is next to the owner of the massive rhino.
  6. Warren (still middle name) is exactly to the right of the guy with a long nose.
  7. The tall guy is somewhere between the guy who collects miniatures and Hunter, in that order.
  8. The guy with a middle name Quinton is next to the guy with a last name Petrenko.
  9. Vaugh (middle name) is at one of the ends.
  10. The guy with a first name Harvey assembles miniatures.
  11. The guy with a last name Naiman is exactly to left of the guy interested in microbiology.
  12. The guy with a patronim Dmitrievich (we will use it as a middle name) is exactly to the left of Hunter (middle name too).
  13. The owner of the small mouse is next to the guy who learn macroeconomics for fun.
  14. The LHC guy is next to the guy with a last name Smith.
  15. The owner of the great dane is exactly to the left of the fan of the Large Hadron Collider.
  16. Alex (first name) is next to the dog owner from the previous sentence.
  17. Hunter is the weirdo who loves macroeconomics news.
  18. The guy with a humongous ego is exactly to the left of Vale (last name).
  19. The guy with big belly is somewhere to the right of Alex (first name).
  20. In the second house is the guy with a first name Ivan.
  21. Smith is exactly to the right of the macroeconomics fan.
  22. The guy with short hairs is somewhere to the left from the guy with a last name Miller.
  23. Someone owns the big horse, don't remember who.
In which house does Edward live?

Rules? You can and probably should give each other any hints/clues/ways for a solution other than direct answers.
You can ask me any question and I'll happily ignore them. If there is any mistake - well, I don't speak English and regret nothing.

Edit: had to recreate 2 GAs due to regional locks, but since nobody entered them anyway I think it's not a problem.

What we currently know...well, assuming that everyone knows "In which house Edwards lives" is that there are zero solvers despite over 235 players and 1550 attempts. It would seem that we need to think about how to enter the answer properly.

The challenge ends on the OPs birthday, which is "11.12.2025" (11th December 2025).
Escollo, the OP, is a refined crafty cryptic curator and doesn't let anything go to waste. Presumably a ten or eleven day long challenge is important to it all.
"Only top 98% could solve it." means one in fifty can't.
The link sends us to "💡 The title 💡" and the question is "The question".
There is only 1 question and the answer case sensitivity is off - so UPPER and lowercase don't matter in the answer.

What language or alphabet is the answer in? How can we ascertain what the input answer is from the answer to the zebra puzzle?

If anyone else has anything to add I'd greatly appreciate it. This was never about Clair Obscure for me and now it is about finding a solution :)

Also: "I don't speak English and regret nothing"? That felt a bit out of place... a clue?

(Edit: clearly wrong, as pointed out by Oshyer and hallak65 below)

Also, the names and objects in the puzzle might mean something -- a guy that likes the LHC, really? Let us put the whole solution in a table and see what comes out of it...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

bruteforced how? There are only 5 houses; if one of them were the solution, everybody bruteforced it at the beginning without solving it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I doubt one of them is the solution. So instead of "bruteforced" I should have said "stumbled into it"

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That is a possibility, but with the ten second time penalty between incorrect guesses much of that bruteforced would have been done by a few more already.

Currently at 557 players, 4124 attempts and only 2 solves.

Seems the 98% part might be more useful than initially thought :)

Comment has been collapsed.

I would like to see the person who can bruteforce it, 'cause with 1 account it would take about 400 duodecillions years (or 400 sextilliard years if you are from one of those countries that use long scale)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Assuming 400 duodecillion years isn't an arbitrary figure, and the answer only contains letters and no numbers or other characters, then the answer would have to be 24-25 letters long. EDIT: used division instead of multiplication accidentally, DarkDreams1 is right, it would have to be 32-33 letters

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That would mean the answer has 32 letters (assuming 26 letter alphabet)? I'm so confused right now ...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If we're talking 400 sextilliard years then we're looking at numbers used in things like theoretical discussions about cosmology, entropy and the universe universe as a whole (Both past and future).

Perhaps "invisible" or some sort of Schrodinger buzzword might be what we're needing...

I did, didn't work :/
I'm pretty sure I know the exact location of everyone, but the answer format is apparently really weird, because just giving an answer doesn't work.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I completed the puzzle, no idea how to answer the question.
Assuming the question being asked is "in which house does Edward live", and pretending that the answer is "seven" for the sake of not spoiling the real answer, here are the answer formats I've tried:

seven, 7, number seven, number 7, #7, seventh, 7th, house seven, house 7, house number seven, house number 7, house #7, the seventh house, the 7th house, seventh house, 7th house, #7 house, seven house, 7 house, VII, house VII, Edward lives in house number seven, Edward lives in house number 7, Edward is in house number seven, Edward is in house number 7

Any hints on what format the answer should be in? Or if the question is a red herring? I know I'm not getting the house number backwards, since one of the puzzle clues specifically states "Ivan is in house number two", and the other clues only work if Ivan is in the second house.

I'm not the one who solved the puzzle but OP answered your question in the comment above:"1 word. Like with letters. But I doubt this will help you in any way". And the last part of that answer makes me think there's a riddle within a riddle.

I tried a couple other potential options after seeing that one (which I can't really name here because they would be spoilers) but it still seems very opaque. Hopefully the one solver isn't just OP testing their own puzzle and they come back to give us a hint.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Based on previous comments, it's possible the answer is a 32 letter word maybe?
Since OP says it's 1 word, I assume all letters, and someone did the math when OP mentioned the odds of bruteforcing it, which led to 32 letters.

EDIT: Based on previous puzzles from OP, I can only assume that the which house does Edward live sends you to the next step, to continue the puzzle, so maybe after doing the logic puzzle and having it all in a nice table, that house will have maybe the first letters be a code for something to continue the puzzle wherever? At least I tried, but so far my attempts haven't led to anything. Or maybe this is nothing, who knows.
