I need a game that really hooks when you start playing, either with the story or the gameplay or the setting or whatever. Something that makes you not want to stop and play any other game. I have trouble with starting a game, getting a little progress, then getting distracted with another game or another Isaac run or whatever.

This is part of my "most interested" backlog. Which of these games did you play that really sucked you in until you finished the game?

Alice Madness Returns
Alien: Isolation
Alpha Protocol
Ascendant
Assassin's Creed Black Flag
Assassin’s Creed III
Besiege
Bionic Commando
CoD: Advanced Warfare
Dark Souls II
Darkness II

Well, if you played and enjoyed the Walking Dead, then you should go with season two. You can make progress effortlessly and the story is intereseting enough to keep you going.

And if no one mentions it: The Banner Saga. You might want to check out a gameplay video, as some people don't like the combat system, but the story and "resource-management" part is so engaging, that you just can't stop playing before you brought your trek to safety.

Black Flag looks amazing, but i wouldn't expect "Sid Meier Pirates" kind of fun. Naval mechanics were huge let down for me.

ships have only hull damage, you board AFTER you damage hull
on bigger ships have to do stupid side objectives like climbing highest mast to cut the flag
direction of wind have no impact whatsoever
all ships seem to be similarly maneuverable and fast so they just look different and do more damage or have "special" attacks like mortar or ram (yeah ram in carribean, awesome)

and yeah, i'm no fan of assassins creed series, just looked for some decent sailing/piracy game. this is not it.

The Force Unleashed games are not too long, and offer nonstop action from the beginning. Dragon Age Origins takes way more time, but also keeps you interested from the beginning (you start with the origin story of the character of your choice) and has a great story. Walking Dead S02 and The Wolf Among Us are both great and shouldn't let you go until you finished them. :)

I recommend The Darkness II (Who would have guessed with this avatar ^^). It has a relatively tight plot that sucked me in, fighting is a lot of fun and the game isn't too long.

What I try to do is work on a few games at once. The mood isn't always right for just 1 game to be working on. I would definitely put the Wolf among us in that list to play, or any good telltale game. The rest is up to you, I would recommend Dragon Age Ultimate from that list, as well as The Force Unleashed since they are short and who doesn't love STAR WARS! :P

Freedom Planet if you enjoy your classic Sonic clone. (+possibilities of speed runs and some nice achievements).
One of the Telltale games for some hours of story driven entertainment.

I'd go with one of these 3:
Ghostbusters: The Video Game (especially if you're a fan of the franchise)
Mark of the Ninja
Shadowrun Returns

Honorable mention to:
Hitman Absolution
I did switch between that and a few other games while I was playing it, but I did keep coming back to it to finish it.

Hello,

  • Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition- I really enjoyed that game and played it from start to end with all dlcs:) There are many mods to enhance the graphics and other stuff:)
  • Dark Souls II - I love Dark Souls, so i played the second part too. I didnt like this part so much, but thats my personal few. But if you liked the first one you cant go soooo wrong with that;)
  • Papo & Yo Beautiful game with a story behind and takes not soooo much time.
  • UnEpic That game surprised me. Didnt expect much but its really funny sometimes and i liked the gameplay.
  • The Wolf Among Us - Good game too:) Nice graphics and story. The only telltale game which i own and it was really good. Not to long either.I have only played 8 hours;)

Definite recommendations:

  • Freedom Planet - A pretty awesome platformer game. The mechanics are tight and the art style is endearing.
  • Intake - All the pretty colors. The awesome soundtrack. A game that can be played in short bursts.
  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes - Solid gameplay. Even better recommendation if you also plan on playing The Phantom Pain somewhere down the line.
  • The Wolf Among Us - Probably my favorite Telltale story of the games I played so far.

Other recommendations:

  • Dark Souls 2 - The gameplay is really good. Takes a while to beat.
  • Far Cry 3 - Great open world game with a forgettable story and horrible main character. Takes a while to beat.
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - Great JRPG. Story was awesome but takes a while to ramp up (like most JRPGs). Takes a long time to beat and ends on a cliffhanger (First part of a trilogy).
  • The Walking Dead Season 2 - Standard Telltale game. Probably only worth it to you if you liked The Walking Dead S1.
  • Shadowrun Returns - Great CRPG. Very text-heavy. Takes a while to beat.

dragon age, shadowrun, riddick, far cry 3. in that order for me.

da is probably the most time consuming title, shadowrun is pretty short so it's probably a better option if you don't wanna spend over 50 hs on a single game.

I have completed none of these games and a lot are on my backlog as well. I have started a few of them, though. Thanks for me making me feel bad! :-P

The one with the most hours in it that I haven't finished is Dragon Age, but if you want a game that's fun but easier to drop & pick up again (like, the opposite of what you asked for) I'd go for Rayman Origins. It's a gorgeous little platformer.

I don't think there's any game anymore that could suck me in so that I have to finish it -- but that would be my problem, not the game's.

Hi bobofatt,

May I talk about my personal experience ?
I'll refer to games at the end.

I kind of have the same problem as you do and I understand that it isn't related to the quality of the games involved.

I may miss completely the point of your question. I may even take your question far too seriously but I've been thinking a lot about this lately. Especially since I hit the 200-games-bought-in-a-year bar on Steam and I've only completed a dozen. And I think we all feel the same about this problem.
I used to pirate games a lot in my student days. No longer (except when the platform is dead or for some almost abandonware). Now I buy games during sales and in bundles, which in terms of value you accord to the games is almost equivalent. When you don't feel you invest so much in a game, it's easier to dismiss it. In the 90's, when I bought a boxed game, I'd complete it several times. Even the longest ones. But for the past decade I've been spoilt.

I have so many games that I spend more time watching reviews, walkthroughs and browsing bundle sites than actually playing. And whenever I start a game I like, I can start it over around three or four times, fiddling with the settings and just looking if it "runs" well or if I chose the right character build.

Then, there are some other reasons why I may discard a game :

  • it's not THAT good (Eidolon, L.A. Noire, you name them...)
  • right out of the box, it feels too time consuming (Don't Starve, Minecraft...)
  • it feels too competitive and I caught the train too late (any competitive multiplayer)
  • it needs some hours to get into, every session has to be at least four or five hours long and I'd have to sacrifice other activities to enjoy it the right way (Dark Souls, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, The Witcher series, Pillars of Eternity ; man I love these games but I can't finish them)

However, I love games. I love to talk about games. I think it's the great artform of this century.
So ?

Here are some hints. They may not work for you or for anybody else but this is all I've got:

  • play with somebody else. Plan a session with a friend. It can be multiplayer or single player. The important thing is to be in the same room. You can share the controls or one can play alone and the other one can watch. There's always something special in playing with a friend. You don't drop the games as easily. And don't fiddle with unimportant things like the technical settings or the completionist syndrome. And you can talk while playing.

  • to recover from a long period of not playing seriously (this was your question I presume), go for the classics. Play one of the greatest titles there is. Not the latest hyper-marketed AAAs. The real classics. The pillars of what gaming is. Play Mario. Play Zelda. Play Half Life 1. Play Psychonauts. Play The Longest Journey. Play Shadow of the Colossus. Play Portal. If it has to come from your list, I'd go for Alien: Isolation (more because of the atmosphere than for the gameplay), Far Cry 3, Mark of the Ninja, Rayman Origins and The Wolf Among Us because all of these games know what they're doing, Murdered: Soul Suspect because of the mystery and Thief because it's a classic. But you might just look for another game. A classic you haven't played. Go for the best game you have never played. Check the "best games of all time" and see if you agree with the writer on titles you know. If you do, aim for the highest ranked game you've never played.

  • play a short title. If you know your attention will drop within two hours, play a short title. Something like Limbo, Braid, Mark of the Ninja, Papo and Yo.

  • go for another genre. I can see that you are very adventure oriented except for a few titles. Try some exploration game. Try some RTS, Civ game, racing game. Recently, I've discovered Driver: San Francisco. It's absolutely not my genre but I had a blast for some hours.

  • take a break. Don't buy new games for a while. Read books. Hike. Watch movies. Play boardgames. Flirt. F#*%. Even if you go in a five star restaurant for every meal, expect the thrill ratio to drop.

That's all I got.

Cheers.
