Hello and welcome to this new discussion,

To begin with, I will share a few that I've tried and definitely recommend doing so you can better improve your gaming experience.

For instance, if you go into your Task Manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL or Right Click Taskbar and going into Task Manager), head to Options and turn on Always on Top. This will save you time when you have a game crashing on you, making the Task Manager show on top of your not responding program/game.

My second personal favorite shortcuts are to press the WIN + . that opens up the Emoji Tab. I discovered this a couple of months back, and ever since then, it has been an essential thing for me to use. We no longer need to copy them from somewhere or select them from different tabs.

Lastly, I will end up with WIN + E, which helps to open up My PC easily and quickly.

Do let me know your tips and game hacks you use every now and then or all the time. This will help not only me but also others who are reading your comments.

Good luck and have fun! 🤗

I find the CTRL + SHIFT + ESC a bit uncomfortable to use, so I prefer CTRL + ALT + DEL.

I use that instead of Ctrl+Alt+Delet, since it doesn't require wasting time to click on the task manager, and I can do it with just my left hand. I use the three finger Volcan mind meld technique to make it less awkward.

I learned a great one a while back. If you hit Win+Ctrl+Shift+B, it'll do a small "reboot" of your graphics card. Does WONDERS if you're getting a black screen in a game but can hear music and such. (I get it A LOT when I boot up ESO)

(Also, thanks for the Always On Top trick. I remember having it enabled a while back but I went to check and turns out it was disabled. Those couple of games that kept freezing and the task manager refusing to come out of hiding makes a lot more sense now)

I don't think I've had such issue with games or I didn't notice it, but that's a really good thing to remember to do.

True, I've had this issue so many times to the point that I had to use CTRL + ALT + DEL and then Choose Sign Out. That will also terminate the frozen program, but you may close other apps in the process. Good thing is that it will take less time to do it than a restart.

Call me an idiot, but only recently I learned about WIN+SHIFT+S for the snapping tool. Not as much for gaming, but wonderful all sorts of other things (like getting a screenshot of your Task Manager to show to other people).

Wait, that was just a manner of speaking, you do not really HAVE to call me an idiot!

No idea when or why I even picked that up as a screenshot method but it works.

Me too, I used to do that a lot, that is what PrtScr was made for, I think. But with this WIN+SHIFT+S thing you can crop it right when you capture it, so you do not have to crop it later in Paint, save it and reimport it somewhere else... Just capture it and paste directly to whatever application you need it in.

Ok, this snapping tool saves just 2 steps... but once I got used to this, I could never go back to PrtScr... :D

Cheers!

Definitely a useful tip. I was really unsure if I want a dual-screen or an Ultrawide screen. I bought the ultrawide screen, but would like to have another monitor so I can multitask even better.

I absolutely love my duals ... ultrawide would be fantastic overall but I really like having the second screen so I can have a browser open on the side for those games that just do my brain in, keep the walkthrough or video open on the smaller left screen while I have the game running on the larger right one.

Been thinking to do that too and having an additional ultrawide or smaller monitor on the side for that. I think it's super cool for all kinds of purposes. I'm more interested in having an additional monitor on top.

When mouse not work i like use this:
go to controlpanel, accessibility, accessibilitycenter, mouseaccessibility, and put V in activate cursor control
Then use numpad:
Shift+NumLock for activate\disactivate cursor
1, 2, 3,4,6,7, 8 ,9 in NUMPAD hold on, used for move cursor
5 in NUMPAD = mouse left click
0/Ins in NUMPAD (Drag left click \ hold left click simulation)
/ in NUMPAD for activate or disable left or right mouse click simulation;
Asterisk in NUMPAD activate for middle mouse click simulation;
Minus "-" in NUMPAD for right mouse click simulation

See what software use nvidia GPU ,
start nvidia control panel,go desktop or view tab (she is up),select "Display GPU Activity Icon in Notification Area" , an icon with colors green\red cubes appear, click that for see softwares still use your gpu, work also with multiple gpus

ctrl+M is MUTE sound in microsoft edge latest version browser
Ctrl+tab go next browser tab
ctrl+shift+tab go back browser tab
ctrl+number go tab that number
in microsoft edge browser CTRL+TAB (Go next tab) , CTRL+W close tab
i also like to use Vertical tabs so much + Group tabs by name (in vertical mode)

This is not about keys but helpful for me:
-in old windows10 (with 11 not work) i like to do right click in tast bar and add main "PC Resource" to it,
this allow me to surf the folders path of all hardisk without need open windows

-When\if i format my pc,i like to make a full image backup (before to install steam eetc.) so if\when my pc start problems, instead of fix them or format i just save my savegames and go back to that image backup and pc work like new , and for me this is very easy to do because i use my pc different than other people,i only download official stores app (steam, gog, google, microsoft etc.) and not download programs\music\videos\pictures etc. so in my pc i have "nothingg to lose" because there is nothing on it (only games and stores) but this give me the advantage to can back in that image very easy and also to NOT need big\many storages spaces also only a 236GB would be enough for me.
i also Noticed that if i
Disable Windows\Xbox\Nvidia Recording features and
Close with taskbar shops i NOT need (Epic,"OriginHelper",Xbox,Eadesktop etc.)
then GPU give so much BETTER performances (fps) in games

-Sometimes when some games NOT have Cloud Saves i setup online storages apps like the onedrive or googledrive etc.for make online backup of the saves game folder, but i do this only if the game have a folder only with saves and NOT other files

-in steam, settings, controller "desktop configuration" can configure xbox controller for move mouse cursor and do left\right click

-Epic games launcher,if you own multiple accounts different games but you lazy make login all them, after install them just start the gams from the .exe in game folder and game start also if account logged is wrong

-Epic games launcher, for create backup of games you own, just copy folder game call it gamenameBackup. When want restore it,start download the game, stop download, delete download,go in game folder,(example program\epic\celeste)copy .EGSTORE folder, paste it inside your backup folder,Delete emtpy game folder (example program\epic\celeste),rename gamenameBackup in gamename, restart the download in epic,Epic will do Verify+Install instead of download

i not know why microsoft allow me update to win11i don' have pc with tpm2.0,my mobo 40€very cheap old ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  1. Always install Directx 9c (Full package: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=8109)
  2. Install GFW Live (For Windows 10: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=201134)
  3. Install Legacy nVIDIA PhysX-9.13 (https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/physx/physx-9-13-0604-legacy-driver/)
  4. Install games to a separate drive from Windows. If you don't have a separate drive, create a partition.
  5. Backup saves (I have saves for all games pre Steam and now backup my steam profile. Old fashioned copy paste)
  6. If playing fighting games on a keyboard, get a PS/2 keyboard. It supports full button presses and registers everything. None of that false mechanical keyboard anti-ghosting marketing crap. I and my brother would play street fighter zero on the same keyboard against Bison and all keys would register. Can barely play by myself on a so called 'mechanical gaming anti-ghosting keyboard'
  7. Limit the number of background processes. Disable all unnecessary auto launch software. You can see the list in the Startup tab in Task manager.
  8. Know yourself and take time to develop you own keyboard / mouse config that is comfortable for you. Trust me, WASD is overrated.

If I remember anymore I'll update this post. Cheers.

Regarding tip #6 - Its not that a PS/2 keyboard supports more button presses than a USB one, it entirely depends on the matrix layout and or whether or not the keyboards supports full NKRO (N-Key RollOver). Most keyboards say they support (up to) 6 key anti-ghosting functionality, which nearly always means that there are many key combinations which cannot be pressed together.

There are some keyboards that claim to have full NKRO, but which have only have 26-50 key partial implementations which can be problematic at times too. When i was looking for keyboards a few years ago it was nearly impossible to find a keyboard that supports full NKRO for under $70-110. Some keyboards which support full NKRO do have a requirement that they're connected in PS/2 mode instead of USB mode. (And some of those keyboards will not work in your computer's Bios before starting your operating system without switching modes.)

You can prevent Windows Defender from performing scheduled virus scans.

Search for Task Scheduler in the Win search bar -> Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Windows Defender. In the middle top window is Window Defender Scheduled Scan. Right-click that name and select Disable. Games will not be interfered with virus scanning. Have to disable Scheduled Scan again after a new OS update.

Don't remember having issues with it. Windows Defender is not a bad antivirus. It's free and it does an okay job to keep you protected if you don't go on sketchy websites.

Speaking of that, get WOT for your browsers. It's a tool that scans and puts a circle over your pages when you search in google. It helped me not go on sketchy websites soooooo many times!

Okay, by default the game auto-selects the GPU it will run on, but sometimes (especially on a laptop when it is not plugged in) it will choose the worse card for various reasons. I have illustrated the necessary steps required to force it to run on the dedicated GPU, and to turn it to "Prefer maximum performance" onboard that GPU.

  1. Right click on desktop>NVIDIA Control Panel (Pic 1)
  2. Inside that, go to "Manage 3D Settings" (Pic 2 #1)
  3. Select the game you want to set to run on the GPU from the drop-down list or navigate to it (Pic 2 #2),
  4. Select the preferred GPU from the drop-down menu (Pic 2 #3),
  5. Under "Specify the settings for this program" (This is only available if you have selected the dedicated GPU in Step 4!!) turn Power management mode to "Prefer Maximum Performance"
Note that this is different from turning the power plan to maximum under Control Panel>Power. Both should be done.

You won't believe it if I told you, but this trick helped me get more FPS out of my AC: Odyssey just now. Really useful stuff for that as oftentimes I'd see my PC struggle with the loading. Since that change, I didn't have any loading and the game ran a lot more smoother than before.

I'm looking forward to see how it goes in the next games. I am playing AC: Odyssey at its lowest setting and to be fair, still looks good, with this tweak, I can see how smooth now it runs in most parts and I didn't encounter loading times. I've got to see more, but it's a useful thing to try and see if I can increase the FPS a bit for some demanding games.

Comment has been collapsed.

"Porefer maximum performance" doesn't do what some people seem to think.. The name is a bit misleading, and it has no performance benefit on demanding games (in some cases it even gives worse performance due to increased heat).

This mode should only be used for certain old games. This setting forces the GPU to run at max clocks instead of downclocking itself when GPU usage is low. By forcing max clocks it may fix performance issues when there's some abrupt high demanding scene and the GPU doesn't increase the clocks fast enough.

But having the GPU clock forced to max means higher heat. That leads to lower boost clocks, and why in some cases performance may be worse.

Never set "prefer maximum performance" globally, that completely disables idle/desktop/2D clocks.

Some recent drivers have been a bit buggy with the normal setting (not sure if it's been fixed already, I have this option set to "adaptive" instead, using nvidia profile inspector), for example in Battlefield 1, where the clocks wouldn't boost properly leading to bad performance.

OOOooooh, great news, thank you! I had recently had a bug where my GPU refused to run at full speed, and I tried setting that to "prefer maximum performance" to get a bit more power out of it. (shutting down, pulling the battery & cord, waiting 10 minutes, repowering, and rebooting fixed it but anyway). I think I was recommended to use "prefer maximum power" for an older lego game, or one that my rig was barely capable of running. However, it seems to be a "as needed" setting, not a "try it in every demanding game to make things run better?"

Anyway, I would never set any of these globally, as that sounds very iffy.

Bottom line: Thank you very much for this information! I appreciate it!

I don't really find that as a problem, but you're free to do so if you'd like. If not, if more agree, I'll change the Title to something more related to Windows. I know that there are not many Mac users playing on their laptops/desktops so I believe it's safe to say I didn't bother being specific.

A lot of the settings apply on the Windows from the Mac, for instance, commands that contain CTRL in Windows are often used on Mac as COMMAND. Eg. CTRL + C = COMMAND + C = Copy

Well, let's start from the fact that it wasn't a jab. And I did not said that I don't use windows. But with such title - I expected maybe some generic advice, or maybe hardware-related, but definitely not advice about windows shortcuts. So, I suggested how to make this thread better, that's all.

If you want to change a bit quicker between 2 things you use, press Alt+ESC instead of Alt+Tab. Alt+Esc doesnt ask which one to go.it just goes from now to the previous.

Mouse gestures. Move the mouse around in some pattern you set up and it makes a ton of shortcuts for you.

I think that feature goes out the record, but may become a feature in the future. I like the screens that allow you to touch the screen and interact with it.
