..and I just smoked one.
care to share your best tips to finally quitting?

EDIT (after having read 99%):
So, thanks, guys.
You helped me out a great deal, here :)
Interestingly enough, while reading and commenting all posts, I haven't had a cig :D

I will consider everything you guys suggested, but probably will buy an e-cig starter kit from a local shop.
I guess, for now, I need the habit more than the nicotine, so a 0mg nicotine e-cig seems like a good solution for the transition.
In a couple of weeks, or so do I hope, I'll be finally clean. Clean forever :)

Thanks, guys.
I'll leave this thread open for you guys to be able to discuss the topic in more detail, if wanted :)

EDIT 2 (2 weeks after OP):
Yup, I'm pretty much a non-smoker now :)
It's been over a week that I ordered and recieved a ego-c starter kit and I LOVE it :)

Thank you folks for making my life MUCH better :) :)

If you knew anything about me, you'd realize I'm nothing like you describe (as are a majority of daily smokers). Only a small percentage of users utilize such a one-dimensional attitude, they're typically in high school/college.

Hang around people with colds/the flu. :p

That's how I quit in the end. Caught something, felt awful, didn't want to smoke and before I knew it almost a day had passed without one. Decided then I might as well use the opportunity to try to give up and when I started to feel well again I was already a few days in so the very worst of the cravings had gone.

Not very practical I know, but it worked for me. Good luck with it.

Depends really, but i used to smoke around 25 a day, ever since i started vaping i'm tobacco free.

PS. You can vape liquids with or without nicotine, even if you do vape liquid with nicotine, you can do it gradually until you have no need for nicotine.

Thanks for your insight and another vote on e-cigs :)

I gave up smoking last year by using e-cigarettes. They do contain nicotine, but you can get varying strengths and even without on some brands. I stopped smoking real cigarettes straight away as the e-cig still gives you nicotine but more importantly it gives your hands something to do when you get the impulse to reach for a cigarette. That part was the most difficult when I tried to give up by other means, patches, cold turkey etc.

After a while you can move to non-nicotine e-cigs or just stop using them. I went for a vape kit (the Ego series but others are available) which is more advanced than a e-cig, you get a very wide variety of flavours which do taste great! I have a few non-smoking friends on the nicotine free ones :)

Hope that helps, and good luck with giving up smoking. People think it is easy but it is not.

I tried an e-cig once and they come in all sorts of weird flavours. There was a coffee flavoured one, it was awesome.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There are so many flavours available that it is like part of the fun waiting for them to be sent to see how close the flavours are :)

At the moment I have a few flavours in the vape carts. Watermelon is my current favourite, before that I had a lemon flavour which was like eating a lemon muffin :) They are perfect for after you eat food, it's when smokers usually want a cigarette. For general daily use I use a tobacco flavoured liquid.

I smoked for 12 years. Honestly, at the end I hated it with a passion and quit cold turkey. It has been 4 years now that I haven't smoked and I feel ten-fold better. Quitting smoking is the best decision you can make. I took up long distance running when I quit. I tried acupuncture, the patch, nicotine gum, hypnotism (this was a sham fucking rip off, don't ever do it), and other stupid things over the years. You have to want it, mean it, and commit to it. I still get pangs where I will want a cigarette every now and again, but they are over fast. The first few months are the hardest. I didn't go out with friends during those times as most of them smoked during this time as well.

Hope something in there helps. Smoking is the worst.

Only thing missing is the quitting thingy ;)

However, I do appreciate your input :) - I'm thinking almost the same.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I quit smoking 5 months ago, from 20 cigs a day to 0 in one day and i feel damn good. The first week is the worst, but after that you'll feel much better and be more motivated to not smoke again.

The best way to quit is to take advantage of another big change of your life: move out, start exercising, meet new people or begin with a new hobby. The important part is to replace those cigarette moments with something else to keep you distracted.
Patches and chewing gums are rather useless.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Can't attest for the patches but I've seen people just get hooked on the gum instead. In one case, the person's been chewing it for a decade now as a nicotine alternative. It's a little sad.

I've been smoking for 12 years now, and found out about e-cigs a few months ago, decided to try it out and it actually helped me quit smoking. I quit for a month, went on vacation and started smoking again. But I still use my e-cig occasionally just to not smoke for a week or 2. But I usually end up buying a pack again. But I do recommend trying an e-cig, you could just start with one of those that you can use for a week and then throw away, just to try it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So, feeling the need to switching back to normal is just a ... head thing, once you'd switched to e-cig?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah it really is. Because there is no need to get back to normal cigs once you own an e-cig. It's just something in your head, which doesnt make sense. But you know what I'm talking about. You just gotta stay strong and get through that point.

Permalink

e-cig - no buying normal ones, getting weaker nicotine dosages each month - dont use e-cig all the time - try to use it as a normal cig (even leave the house to "light" it)

See, this is the thing..
I'm not really sure it's the nicotine that I need, I'm pretty sure it's the habit.. the movement, if you will.. and the feeling to have smoke going in and out.

So, do you recommend getting a cheap e-cig with a non-nicotine liquid?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, they don't contain all the nasty stuff tobacco does which does all the damage, just nicotine, flavour and base. There are 2 bases used, both have been used for medical inhalers for decades. PG can cause a mild allergic reaction, VG doesn't but has less of a throat hit, but more smoke. Pure VG mixes can be found if you need them.

I did all my research on my other PC, so all links are there.

If you can find a local shop, they will let you usually let you try some flavours, to at least find out what you like before buying online.

One area of concern might be in the flavourings used, I do recall there was a compound being used in some sweet flavours which turned out to be bad, but anyone reputable no longer uses it.

I had times when I bought cigarettes for 50 bucks a week - not proud of it, I can tell you - and this is also the price range in which I wanted to get an e-cig, if any ;)

Is some stuff that you'd recommend internationally available?

Don't know why or how, but smoking tended to calm the coughing a lot, for me :D

True, one of the lovely chemicals in cigarettes suppress the need to cough.

I'm just talking about the taste here, which imo is awful when you catch a cold. I've never truly quit, but whenever I caught a cold I could stop smoking on the spot until I got over it.

Permalink

Also, start buying the cheapest brand.. which are usually so awful you don't even want another.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Concerning the taste while having a cold: I've never had problems with that :O
Sure, it tastes bad, but not as bad as in "FUCK, GET THAT THING AWAY FROM ME!" :/

Concerning the taste of cheap brands: They tend to have a higher amount of toxic substances in it, which I doubt will help. But sure, they taste like shit :D

Maybe it WOULD be a good idea to just buy the strongest brands and like.. "chainpuff" them all away..
I guess, it COULD gross you out ultimately :P

Try the e-cig.
This is my own experience: :
I started using this shit since 1 month, I was at 20-25 cigarettes before, now I'm at 6-7 cigarettes + e-cig.
It's not better for health, but not worse. I still smoke cigarettes, but as I smoke four times less, I spend three times less money than before, this is a good start I think, now I definitely need to stop the cigarette, in some time I hope I can do that.

Treat yourself at certain milestones with the money you're saving. Buy yourself a new game or a DVD after the first two weeks - or wait even longer and work towards something bigger. I put my savings towards a new car - It was actually scary to see how fast the money accrued!

Best of luck pal - it's very difficult but you'll get there.

Thanks, man :)

The other option is to accept smoking. However then there's still the conflict in the head. Personally I haven't smoked until I started earlier this year. I've smoked a few months and 6-7 packs total. Approximately one cigarette per day. I feel like I can quit any time, smoking for me is like candy or masturbation, a way to get some brief enjoyment.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm sorry, but I could never "accept" my smoking habit.
At all times, I knew this was going to kill me some day, if I didn't stop immediately.
Turns out I was SO addicted at some point that although feeling circulation problems I kept smoking because I "needed" it.
And then began excuse after excuse, "try" after "try"... my point is: once you reach a point where you (deep in your heart!) feel that you can NOT quit any time anymore, it's too late.
