Why the low-low reviews on Steam and (user) metacritic? The game seems interesting but I'm put off by the overhelming negative reviews.

I absolutely LOVE games like Dear Esther or the Path. Also just FYI I like walking! Both in real life and in virtual worlds. (whoah)

Imagine if someone modified it to really make it a walking simulator. I'm thinking a first-person QWOP game, with Surgeon Simulator controls to use your hands!

It tells a beautiful, poetic story. Most of the time, people who rate these types of games poorly don't grasp the underlying meaning or message of these games.

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but aren't all games (I'm talking about ones with story here, no racing or sports games and so on) just interactive stories? The only main difference to most other games is that you don't shoot anything or encounter NPCs.

The question is about player interaction. Do you hava any decisions affecting your gameplay experience?

Who the fuck really cares? Stanley Parable is the same thing other than not being linear. That's the only difference, and people still say Stanley Parable is a game. By the logic of the 'It's an interactive story, not a game!' argument, Stanley Parable is an interactive story with more story paths. Nothing more, nothing less. There's other games similar to this style of gameplay as well.

Yes, I would argue that is what makes huge difference...

Again, other games have this style of gameplay. If you want to justify the difference between Gone Home and Stanley Parable, go ahead. They're absolutely the same gameplay style.

Why? Seriously, why must there be some arbitrary set of qualifications that a thing must fit in order to be deemed a "game?"

I don't buy this argument, that a game must have certain quantifiable elements in order for it to be considered as such. It doesn't help advance the understanding of the medium or gain us anything.

For example, take the Visual Novel genre, a genre that has very little of what would be considered as "gameplay" in the traditional sense. In identifying them as games, what do we lose? We know what to expect when we call it a visual novel, so it's not like someone would reasonably confuse it for a shooter or platformer. I don't think it loses anything by being called a "game" either.

Think: do we have more to gain by forcing things to meet a static and rigid definition of "game?" Or do we have more to gain by changing the definition of a "game" to fit the unique and novel experiences that emerge as the medium grows and matures?

If you enjoyed games like Dear Esther and the Path, you'll probably enjoy Gone Home. It's hated for similar reasons, the fact that it's not a 'game' in the typical sense but an interactive story. I really liked it, I just thought the price tag was a little steep for the length of the game.

Looks like an horror game, but disappointing because is actually a walking simulator. Same for Dear Eshter, it looks great, but what you can do in the game?....walk, when I got it I thought it will be an horror game, but no. SO I just walked some time and bored, maybe I just didn't understand it.

There's nothing wrong with it, in fact it's one of my favourite games ever. Don't judge the game by it's steam reviews, it was a critically acclaimed game (by professionals, not amateurs).
The people who gave it bad reviews would probably prefer a Michael Bay movie to a Fellini movie, so don't take their opinions into consideration and play the game by yourself (or watch some walkthrougs) to find out if you like it

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The short answer is: nothing.

The long answer is: It became the darling of certain people for reasons that are mostly not related to the quality or enjoyment of the game itself, and was subsequently made out to be more than it really is. People going into it with expectations raised much too high got disappointed and pitched a fit, especially those who are prone to backlash against the kind of people who played up the game. I personally found the main storyline a bit saccharine and naive, but that's in the nature of any such story, and in the end I got on board with it anyway. The subplots are far more interesting in my opinion. If you've enjoyed the games you mentioned, I suspect you'll like it.

Permalink

Totally agree with basically everything you said, but isn't the main story line (which revolves around a teenage girl) simply necessary to be a bit naive, even if only for the purpose of being believable? Or am I having a brain fart here and don't get what you mean?

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I'm trying to avoid any spoilers, hence the vagueness. But you're sort of on to what I'm talking about, yes. In short, there are certain 'grim meat-hook realities' that a story of this sort glosses over and which would probably result in a very different sort of story than what is presented if accounted for. But it's fine. It's not supposed to be that kind of story, after all.

Gone Homo is so shit because it was so hyped up by "gayming journalists" and every SJW idiot on the planet. There was nothing redeemably good about it. Story was shit, setting was just plain retarded (I accidently found the ending the first time I played it right at the start) and gameplay was practically none existent.
All in all it was mediocre, at best. It got all the hate because it was praised so goddamn much, undeserved.

'Gone Homo'? Okay, so you have a problem with homosexuals, I'm sensing. 'Hyped up'? Yeah. So is every other game that is popular. It's not the only game that got 'hyped up' and is shit. Story was shit? A lot of people disagree. Setting was 'plain retarded'? Try wording your sentences better, first off. Secondly, the setting fit the story. Gameplay was none existent? If gameplay was non existent, it wouldn't be playable which it clearly is.

All in all, you're an idiot.

EDIT: Yeah, replied to the wrong comment somehow, not even sure how. Either way, my comment stands as it is.

Nah actually not at all. I don't care what sexual preferences someone has. But to what extent? This "game" got unbelievably high scores, which was plain ridiculous. The story was so unbelievably generic and uninteresting in my opinion, which is horrible for a game that is entirely build around the story. There is nothing else left that would make the game worth your time.
Jeez you got me. Sorry that english is my third language and I fuck up from time to time. But good you picked up on that. You should give yourself a pat on the shoulder.
Yes, gameplay is non existent. Simply walking forward and picking up notes so you can uncover the mysterious story at what happened to your sister gasp literally nothing.

All in all, you seem to be hilariously butthurt.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hilariously butthurt? That's odd, because I don't care for the game. I care more about the fact that you seem to think that a game without action isn't a game. What, do you want it to include guns? Explosions? I'd love to hear your suggestions. The story is as generic as a game where you go to war and kill some 'commie bastards'. Oh, wait, that's CoD. The shittiest, most generic story to-date that tries to spice up terrorist bullshit. A game built around the story is about atmosphere, and as I've already stated before, it's not the only game that has done this. English is your third language? I find that hard to believe as such an overused excuse. Again, gameplay isn't non-existent. If you can do something (walking is something, collecting notes is something, interacting with doors and lights and objects is something)in a game, it has gameplay. This game has that.

All in all, you're still an idiot.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I never said a game needs action to be considered a game. Now you are just fishing for straws and try to put words in my mouth. Even simple, yet challenging puzzles would have helped the "gameplay" a huge bit. That's not even too much to ask for, it's still better than just running around in an empty house reading notes.
Sorry to disappoint, but I don't play CoD games. Even though it's funny how most people always come with "LOL u must like COD!!1!!" The atmosphere did nothing for me. Absolutely nothing. I was bored 2 minutes in, the story and atmosphere were absolutely generic, nothing that could hold any interest.
Yes, english is my third language, believe it or not. And why should I use that as an excuse? What for? Enlighten me.
There is no interesting or exciting gameplay, at least not for me and a huge part of other people. For someone who says he doesn't care, you do seem to care a lot though.

All in all, I won't get down on your level and get personal :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually, I was making an assumption that you were an action person because why the hell not. Sure, gameplay could've helped, but it wasn't needed. Did I say that you played CoD? No, I didn't. That was my example of a game with a generic story. Okay, if English is your third language that's fine. I don't care either way. Calling something 'plain retarded' has nothing to do with being bad at the language unless you don't know what the words mean. Don't try and pull that card. Where are you getting this 'caring' from? No one considers that people can choose to have a discussion about something without caring. Perhaps I'm bored, eh?

All in all, this is getting annoying. No more all-in-all!

I don't buy that "Gone Homo" was a typo when you type "gayming journalists" in the very same sentence.

Homophobe is homophobic.

Also, if you are judging a game and its story solely by how quickly you can get to the end, how much content there is, how challenging it is, and so on, I pity you. Not for not liking Gone Home, mind you, but for having such a narrow lense for viewing things that it prevents you from having unfamiliar and interesting experiences. Your opinion is your own, but it is so stifiling.

It's a walking simulator. It can be beat in under 2 minutes. In fact, the entire speedrun can be fit into a reasonably sized .gif.

To make things worse there is no gameplay whatsoever asides from rummaging through someone's house to learn about some kid, which actually happens to be a gay running away from home.

It's basically the shortest visual novel ever. It's not even a game.

I can't tell if this is a troll post, or if you are actually suggesting that a game's quality is always related to the length or the engagement and challenge of a speed run.

That's like saying a book is bad because it's too short, and that it's too short because you deliberately skipped to the last page.

Personally I only watched a lets play of it, nothing about price or reviews had anything to do with it, I just wanted something to watch.

That said I enjoyed what I saw. The atmosphere at the start and then at the end is so dramatically different its a very nice change of pace from the majority of games out there. Story wise, I'd consider it a love story(?) so if that isn't your cup of tea, pass on the game. On that subject it was quite sweet, I enjoyed it. Visually the game was quite nice, shadows, lighting, everything.

I can see why some people would get angry they went into it thinking it was yet another horror game or something, and it wasn't. At $20 that can sour someone's day, but, in my opinion this is a good example of Games as Art. You don't need complex gameplay mechanics to have a good game, nor do you need violence in every game, and hey a romantic story about lesbians is fine...

this gone home thing looks like the same idea ("gameplay" wise) but with more feelings, so meh.
also, the whole thing outside the game (game journalist praying it as the best videogame ever, the whole drama around the Dev, and bot extremes of the audience... the ones that call it "gone homo" and the other one that call morons to the other group, and also claim that the "game" is the best thing ever happen to gaming) pushes me away from the "game"...

If you love something like Dear Esther, then you'll enjoy it. It's not a "walking simulator", there's a story (actually more than one) you go unravelling as you walk through the house picking up objects and discovering your family's past and your sister's present.

Overall, I liked the game. The first hour or so of the game is really boring. But that's because you have to read and interact with everything in the house to get invested in the story. If you are an ADD kid (aren't we all, these days?) who gets bored/disctracted after a couple of minutes of reading, there's a big chance you will quit the game after a few rooms. What I liked about the game was that it only gives you a few pieces of information and, after a while, you start putting together your own theories reggarding what happened in the house and its inhabitants. The game keeps suggesting different things that might have happened in the house (ranging from the supernatural to the mundane) and keeps you always wondering the truth.

3 reasons:

  1. It was overhyped to shit by journalists and others because of the lesbian aspect of the story and was nowhere near as good or deep as the reviews suggest.

  2. The story wasn't that compelling or great. Sure it had the whole 90s aesthetic if you're into that, but overall, despite the decent presentation, it was still a victim of massive overhype.

  3. The big one, at least for me. It had nowhere near the amount of content to justify the price tag.

Honestly, I'm getting tired of the whole story based game thing, because developers are sacrificing what should be the main focal point (the game) for the story. You could've gotten the same thing out of Gone Home with a book or movie for less money than they were asking for. I'd say it might be worth it if it's on sale for 33% or less of full price, but even then I wouldn't recommend it. There are just a lot of games out there that do the story based thing much better without trying to Activision you out of your cash. To The Moon is one example I can think of that I thought was great with a very emotional story. I still wouldn't buy it for full price though.

If you want a tl;dr for this: this is what's wrong with games now. Overhyped to shit, no gameplay, and the equivalent of a small malnourished child in terms of content for the amount of money they're asking for.
