To be honest you don't need any of this to solve that problem for Castle Crashers. I looked into this when I tried playing with a friend here and you need to plug in the gamepad right when the game is about to start, so it jumps to 2P as described below.

Someone on SteamGifts was looking for a way to play Castle Crashers local co-op, but he only had one controller. The game doesn't let one player use the keyboard if a controller is being used. You can only play local co-op with two gamepads.

Virtual Joystick advertises itself as a Joystick emulator. I have not tested this program myself, but if what I have read is true, it should work fine.
For those of you who have used console emulators on your computer before, the way this works will be familiar to you all. You've already been emulating console controllers.
I posted this already in the forum thread of the person who was asking for this. I thought the community in general might be interested in this. "Everyone" knows about Joy2Key, but what about the reverse?
