because that allows them to get free stuff much easier, i've seen it happen all that time guys are tricked into buying them shit... The REAL girls (yeah there's next to none) mention it maybe once or twice but they dont spout it out all the time which makes it easy to tell which are real and which are just some guy making games...

I played as a Girl on Everquest back in the day for this very reason. I didn't believe it would work, was for a joke. ... Ill be damned within a few hours I had a ton of new armor and weapons and I had a bunch of people wanting to party up to quest etc (previously not seen when I played the male characters)..

There are no genders on the internet. Only faceless avatars and meaningless usernames. It is foolish to favour individuals on the internet due only to perceived gender, or indeed anything else other than directly observed interactions. I see only abstract entities periodically generating text and other content. Not the self generated reflections of hope borne of irrational desire represented by a portrayal of seduction who's only purpose is to manipulate. I tend to deliberately keep my gender ambiguous unless specifically requested. Gender is irrelevant. There are no genders on the internet.

I agree.
Also online gaming, like an MMO, is one of the few areas where you can achieve without race/religion/gender/age/etc being a factor. You can achieve and be judged purely on your deeds and actions. How you choose to interact with others. Not truly knowing who or what the person your dealing with is, leaves you only with deeds/actions and what they say. It's surprising how often all interactions in real life degenerate into those class separations of race/religion/gender/etc.

Threads like this remind me why there aren't very many girls playing video games :)

I am a guy. In gaming, when given the choice, I prefer to play female characters most of the time. I like women, and I don't want to spend the next 100 hours looking at a dude. In an MMO, I will often RP, but never anything too flirtatious. I also don't take hand outs within games, as it's more fun to earn on your own. I do admit that I've made 2 friends in MMOs, that after a year or so, it will casually come up that I am in fact a guy, and that friend has a panic attack or gets very angry and never wants to talk to me again... Never lead them on or anything though, and never asked them for anything. Never hid my gender, but I do tend to keep my private life secret by default. Fantasy and I don't want friendships/Playtime being judged by religion/race/gender/wealth/etc.
Gaming is often about fantasy and escapism. I like badass and strong women, thus I enjoy playing them too. Back when I used to write/draw comics as a kid, I would create them starring Heroines. I'm not homophobic, so I'm fine if people think I'm gay, as it helps filter out people I'm going to be friends with.
In the end, when given a choice, I play women 70% of the time.

You say SteamGifts specifically, but I don't see where this has been a problem so far? Are there actually instances where begging threads are lasting long enough that gender becomes an issue? You're also acting like this is a one-way street, sexist much? Whether or not it's happening, gender in the community is irrelevant. Gender is also not a black and white matter so don't be so quick to make assumptions and hate on people for what you believe they are or are not. Unless you're the one arranging for some sort of date with someone in an MMO or what have you, then don't worry about what other people are doing. If it's begging or otherwise breaks the rules, then just report it and move on.

Do they actually think they'll get free stuff just for "being a girl"? If so, I feel even worse off for the guys who are giving these other guys gifts.
Personally, I think they're just stuck in the closet and pretend to be a girl so it's easier to flirt with other guys..
EDIT: Judging by the consensus, we have a bunch of lonely guys who could care less whether the "girl" they're talking to is actually more of a man than themselves.
