So I got all pumped when I saw the new Indie Gala bundle, The Raving Aces Bundle, and the only reason I cared was because I saw that Guilty Gear X2 #Reload was part of it. Well apparently I'm a freaking moron and didn't realize that I ALREADY OWN IT! I had it in my head that on Steam I owned GG Isuka and GG X2: The Midnight Carnival, the first version of GGX2 which had a retail release in Japan but never the US. Plus at one point in time I've owned all the versions on the different Playstations over the years and it's all a jumbled mess in my brain.

That's my excuse anyway. And the sad thing is losing 4 bucks is actually a big deal when you are as broke as I am.

So anyway, has anyone else here ever make a stupid mistake and bought a bundle or made a trade to get a game and then realized you already freaking owned it?
If not just say yes and make something up so I feel better.

Oh and um, here I guess.... Get this away from me LVL 4+

I have done the same thing before many times. I have traded to get a game only to find out that I already had it.

I forgot I owned Darkstone, I had been reminded it existed and started looking into it... only to find it was on my account.

Unfortunately the game does not work quite right, I cannot read any of the text in it.

You try going into the file folder and changing compatibility settings on the EXE file? Or maybe seeing if there are some launch options you can add in Steam and Googling for something like that? I remember once when TF2 had people looking so shiny that I couldn't see what color people were. I think it was an Nvidia driver update that broke it, but some Steam launch options saved the day until the next patch came out.

Yes!

Uhm... What do I say now...

Jokes aside, I actually forgot for a LOOOONG time I had XCOM: EU because at the time I purchased the Humble 2K bundle 2014 I actually didn't even care about that game at all (I just wanted the Bioshock collection).
A pair of months before the release of XCOM 2, Projared (a Youtube videogame reviewer) did a gameplay of Enemy Unknown just for the sake of it and I fell in love with the game. Moments later, when I went on the Steam page of EU, I got in awe when I discovered I owned the game and didn't even have to worry about buying it.

Unfortunately this makes it a success story, the opposite of yours. ._.

OMG I wish I still had the account I started with. I FORGOT I EVEN HAD STEAM..... YEah... I bought the Orange Box and forgot about it and then that PC died and I had nothing for years and then bought a new PC that came with a free copy of Portal and something else too I think and I just started a new account.... Forgot I owned the Orange Box.... a cardinal sin. My little brother now has that account and its nicen shiny, 10 years of service badge. I should be the one with that badge. Damn my feeble brain.

Oh, I meant accounts at several similar services. I have games on GOG, Origin, Direct2Drive, GamersGate, Humble Store, TellTale Games, Big Fish Games, and 3-4 other smaller stores or sites. Had some on GfWL as well, but they were migrated to Steam since then.

I had similar issues. I haven't signed into Direct2Drive in a very long time and honestly forgot they even existed until recently. I stopped using them after the Gamefly buy-out, but I'm looking at the site now and I don't see any mention of Gamefly. Did they get sold again? And Gamestop basically just shot and killed Impulse Driven; completely killed that download service.

I guess I was more stubborn than anything with that situation. I was very adamant about how I did not want to buy any game twice back when D2D and Impulse were still alive. I recently wanted to replay SW:KOTOR and I tried to redownload the Gamespot Game App that you have to use if you want to access your old Impulse games and it doesn't even work. It sends you a message and says your PC isn't authorized and needs permission and then attempts to contact a server that is now shutdown. I got no response from Gamestop at all when I contacted support and to even get to the app I had to scroll through bottoms of pages and click text links down in fine-print sections. But for some reason I just cannot let myself buy KOTOR again. Had in on Xbox, had it on Impulse, I am not buying again no matter how good it is or how good the sale is. I'm very bullheaded sometimes but things like that and the movie formats constantly changing and how many times Squeenix tries to hawk (yes hawk not hock, I checked) the first FF game. How many times am I gonna buy the same game. I wish I had applied the same level of hate fueled scrutiny in my bundle purchase tonight but oh well, gonna get some cards, gave a gift, and it's another IG bundle I'll get a good Happy Hour bonus for.

Wow I rambled alot.... Whitelisting you for having to read all that.... but I'll be able to tell if you don't read it all.... I mean it.... I'll know.
EDIT: Oh crap.... didn't really look at your user name. I know you. You're already on my WL. I won something from you and I always WL my gifters........ https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/EXwUX/imperial-glory ... ended 09/2015... now how the heck can I remember that and not remember..... sigh.....oh well.

D2D was sold again recently, yes, and they just got back the old name. The Steam keys are still redeemable, so are the product keys for non-Steam games, but they don't host installer files any more for them, so… yeah. I kinda lost SWAT 4 there. Haven't checked if my KotOR keys work on Steam though. (Then again, I have Steam keys for them on my maybe-add-later list, so I'm not in a particular hurry. :))

Nowadays I mostly stick to GOG and Humble Store foremost, as they have DRM-free versions (HB only offers that for a handful, plus they have portable versions, which are not always a good idea…). But since you can never tell which service suddenly will become unavailable, plus it is never a good idea to use only a single one, I will still try to diversify my libraries all over the place.

That was my plan when I started building my library, not wanting to put all my eggs in one basket. But it kinda backfired on me the way things played out. I remember all the panic back then and all the forum what-if threads on what would happen if the big-boy bit the dust but I don't think it's anymore likely of Steam ever getting shutdown than it is for the Apple App Store or Google Play going away. Steam is just too big.
My new plan is stick with the one really nice shiny basket. In principle I've always been opposed to DRM and in theory GOG should be my favorite service. I think it's really cool when devs go with DRM free releases instead of what Ubisoft and EA ended up doing, and it helps sales more than it hurts them. I haven't bought a single title from either publisher since they came out with Origin and UPlay and I never will buy one of their games again. But Steam has always been different. It's got a community feel to it. It isn't just this lifeless download manager app that you are forced to use, it's more about connecting people. If I was playing all my games on GOG I'd be even lonelier than I already am. Steam has done so much for me as far as interacting with people, forming friendships, etc. I would feel totally cut off from the world on GOG whereas on Steam I never feel completely alone even on days where I don't leave the apartment. And as for Humble Bundle's Store, I totally want to get some games there and get the best of both worlds, it's just that they so rarely have a good price on what I want and it just never ends up being worth it for the DRM-free copy I might SOMEDAY end up wanting.

Not in anyway talking smack on GOG. Total respect for that place. I am a little bit upset with GOG at the moment though because I totally missed out on the whole crossover, bring some of your Steam library here thing they had a little while back. That could have been the thing that jumpstarted a decent library there and given me the incentive to keep going back to GOG. I was all about PC gaming in the mid to early 90's and have a lot of fond memories of the old hex-based General series and the SSI strategy games, Sierra adventure games (I miss the Sierra Online network from back in the day), LucasArts, Mircroprose and getting scared have to death playing X-Com with the lights off in the middle of the night. But I just haven't felt like spending money on all that old stuff.

I recently picked up a Saitek flight stick from a thrift store for 2 bucks, not bad but it could never touch my old Thrustmaster, which I could never use if I still had it because of the giant serial port connection it used. And when I was walking home with it I thought about Red Baron and Tie Fighter. And I tried playing both of them and... it was disappointing. It was so pixelated I had trouble understanding what I was even doing. I couldn't get that in the cockpit feeling and just felt disoriented and unable to fly well at all. So I guess that disappointment I usually feel when I revisit most old-school games along with the most recent resentment towards getting some newer stuff on there by missing that cutoff date has me a little turned off to GOG. I will get over it eventually and I would like to check out that GOG Galaxy app. And some old stuff totally does hold up, X-Com, and some of the old point and click games because art doesn't really ever age and pretty looking pixels are always gonna be pretty.

Now when they re-release Dark Legions I'm gonna be all over that! The Abandonia copy has so many problems. Wish it was more playable.

I'm not sure they can. They need a publisher for that or to see some money in it; they put quite some hours into making games run on all modern OSs, after all. :)

BTW, the D2D code for KOTOR does not work for Steam. Only game I ever had on D2D that worked on Steam was for Foul Play, a game I got for my nephew who sadly did not like it nearly as much as Castle Crashers. Heck my D2D code for Titan Quest wouldn't even work on the downloadable copy of Titan Quest that D2D had on their own website after they ditched the download app and went all web. Had to contact support to get different keys which was so fun to have to do.

I pretty much remember everything I won on GOG(from the games I want) and when comes to steam I do manual checks before making a purchase (almost activated Mafia 2 on steam from the current HB before I did the said check)

Yes, many times, but I check before buying just to be sure. Except this one time when I got a bundle, went to activate one of the games I was interested in and steam told me that I already had it.
I also once dropped comments asking for a specific game on a few threads on the trade section and then I clicked on a link to said game's store page that just happened to be in one of the threads just to find out that I already owned it, I got it on a trade a few weeks prior and completely forgot.

Good to hear that, don't worry you're not alone, memory has a limit XD
There's this thing I do when I want to convince myself about not impulse buying something: I go to my library and start scrolling until I find a title I can't recognize, then I try to figure out what that game is, it normally ends with me realizing that I have bought to many games and deciding to not impulse buying. This method fails sometimes, and that's how my backlog keeps growing.

I haven't bought one that I owned, but I've come close a few times. Saw a game advertised, thought "that looks great, I'm gonna buy it!". Then I go to the steam store and see that is already in my library...

Yeah but did you still play it after that? I've had that happened and wanted to buy a game, found out I owned it, and then decided I didn't want to play it. I wasn't able to satisfy my need to buy stuff on Steam so my brain didn't care anymore.

yea happens all the time once you have over a 1000 games in your library it gets really hard to remember what you have already and once you get over 2000 games it gets damn near impossible to have any clue as to what you do and dont have anymore,i just go to my steam library and type the name of the games in a bundle in the search bar to check prior to buying a bundle lol.

I usually do that, like when I'm revealing bundle keys like everyone's been saying. But something about this Guilty Gear game and all the versions out there and all the versions I've had over time.... I just got mixed up and was so certain that the one in the bundle was the one I needed..... my brain is a jerk and a liar.

DUDE! That was the game from 2 people back! I thought about buying it, realized I already owned it, and then didn't even care to play it because I think I really just wanted to spend money. The 111 minutes I have in the game is just from card farming back before they instituted the 2 hour wait before drops policy. Stupid refunds.... wait am I really complaining about that? Yeah, happens too often to me and I actually do try to remember the ones I have.. Don't feel bad, though. There are too many Guilty Gear games on Steam and the names kind of blend after a while. 2, x2, xx... I actually almost did the same thing on the IG, until I checked the games on Steam and saw the owned bar. I was shocked that I owned it. I don't own one that I thought I owned, too. Maybe I'm going senile. Who knows.

I rarely buy bundles and if I do it's for a game I really want, so usually I know what I own even when I see a giveaway on here I remember that I have a copy for my 360, but then again I don't own much and never really ran into that issue, especially with Steamgifts sorting out games I own already.
