"People would just walk around. They didn’t know what to do. They didn’t even go upstairs because a guard told them they couldn’t. They’d say ‘Okay, I can’t go upstairs.’ They wouldn’t do anything,”

I love COD! That means I love video games! I want to play video games for a living! Wow this game is a lot harder than COD :/

That's how I imagined how this all happened.

Lol, you make it look like they restructured the whole game to be a linear, objective based game. But the possibilities are still there, they just give the not so creative ones something to cling onto.

I think you guys are overreacting a little. I have to wonder what exactly does "this element that gave just a hint" mean but it doesn't really sound like they're simplifying it too much...
However, the fact that the play-testers were getting lost so easily when it's THEIR JOB to play games is just inexcusable. How about they actually get real gamers who play games because they like it instead of "professionals" who go by the book.

Playtesting isn't just restricted to "Find bugs." There is also a great amount of value to focus testing, dropping someone who isn't familiar with the game, or perhaps games in general into your game to find the things that get overlooked by all the people who have been running through the game for so long they can't see obvious flaws anymore.

In the case of focus testing their job is actually to be a bit clueless, because that gives the developers actual data about how the game plays in a real world scenario.
