Took my son to Ben & Jerry's today for Free Cone Day but the line was literally out the door and halfway down the block. So we went to Sonic and got waffle cone sundaes instead.

Ben & Jerry's is good, but ice cream is like pizza -- it's all pretty good, even when it's not that good.

Hmm, I don't know.

I'm from NYC, so call me a pizza critic but I've been spoiled most my life. Moved upstate 10 years ago and haven't found great pizza again.

I'm curious though. Is there some geographical place that has great ice cream or something? =P

Not really.
I used to make ice cream for a living, and there are certain shops I’ve discovered in various places that make awesome ice cream but they’re few and far between.

Seriously, though, Ben & Jerry is full of crap like guar gum and carrageenan that give it an artificial flavor. Nowhere near as bad as eg coldstone creamery, who basically serve cold chewing gum, but still, noticeable if you’re paying attention.

B&J to me is like NYC corner pizza, better than the garbage served in other parts, but nowhere near as good as places like Juliana’s/Grimaldi/patsy’s

The secret to great ice cream is starting with a good base, using good ingredients, and not mixing in too much air. It's simple, but it's more expensive and more difficult to do on a large scale. It's not something you necessarily notice until you've been exposed to great ice cream, but once you have you can't un-notice it.

For example, I used to love Turkey Hill's Philadelphia Style / All Natural Coffee ice cream (since discontinued). It had a great coffee flavor, and I still think they absolutely nailed the perfect coffee flavor, but they aerated the crap out of it (overrun is the technical term) such that it feels very icy. Once I've had better ice cream with less air mixed in, I couldn't help but taste all the ice crystals in the Turkey Hill.

For supermarket ice cream, my go to is Talenti gelato.

For the best ice cream I've ever had, that would be Capogiro gelato in Philadelphia. They make great gelato and are really inventive with their flavors. I never would have expected Single Malt Scotch gelato to taste good, but it was amazing! And the Bacio - chocolate hazlenut gelato with candied hazlenut bits - is delightful.

Upstate New York! That's where I'm from, so I have to ask, what area are you in? I'm from Schenectady. My dad still lives there, I try to get back once a year or so.

I would agree that NYC pizza is in a class of its own, but even pizza that's not great is still pretty good.

Agreed about pizza, it's just something I unnecessarily gripe about after being spoiled by NYC. I'm probably just pretentious. ^^

I'm by Syracuse, but I've been to the tri-city capital region a few times. A company I worked for was based out of Clifton Park, so every now and then I had to go there for a meeting. =)

Just like ice cream or sex, pizza can be bad. It just takes a lot for it to be bad. Something has to go very wrong. :D

in my opinion, someone who says they've never had bad pizza probably never had really good pizza
same for sex and ice cream

If you're getting bad pizza / ice cream / sex commonly, I think you need to change where you get your pizza / ice cream / sex! :D

well, I haven't had bad sex since before I got married, only have bad pizza at kids parties, and avoid ice cream I don't trust

I mean bad pizza, bad ice cream, and bad sex are quite common in this world, and most people just don't know any better

A decent ice cream making machine is an investment that's worth it because for me something homemade is better and more rewarding than buying industrial ice cream and who doesn't like ice cream. :-)

I can imagine, totally agree about homemade food. I bought a house out in the suburbs a couple years ago, we love having a garden here. =)

I have an enclosed garden and keep chickens so I have fresh eggs while a part of my garden is a vegetable garden and a herb garden. I just love fresh ingredients and having herbs to season\compliment my dishes.

Without a garden to work, rest and as a place to enjoy family time I would probably go postal. ;-)

There are actual brownies in the ice cream. And not little pieces either. I'm talking bigger-than-your-spoon size brownies.
