It can be a way of attracting players that otherwise wouldn't have ever checked the game or even be aware of its existence, with a bit of luck they might even get a few sales from those who missed it when it was free and are impulsive enough to blow two bucks on some random crappy game. I imagine some sales is better than no sales, and they can always make the game free again after some time has passed.
