I'm going to be starting a project up quite soon and was curious which game engine you recommend to use. It will be a 2D platformer. Preferably something that doesn't have an expensive license.

Gamemaker from YoYo Games. They were giving the Standard Edition for free. Some say, that it'S a multi use program. You can make anything with it :)

I agree, I definitely recommend Game Maker, the limit truly is your imagination. 2D is pretty easy and how hard the game will be to make depends on the complexity of the game itself, the programming language is easy enough for beginners to start with and complex enough for experienced GM user to do great things with.

3D is quite possible too, but vanilla GM isn't the best for that, there are DLLs to add features including ones that make 3D more versatile, but if you're going for 3D, you might as well go for Unity.

RPG Maker is an option too, though that's quite a bit more restrictive, I think it would be possible to make a platformer, I believe I've seen someone do it, but then you'd be fighting against the engine somewhat.

I use unity and I find it harder to use for 2D games than 3D.

EDIT: Also expensive.

with OP's question, it really doesn't matter. When you start a project, you have to make a research on what is best solution for your idea. Ok, you can ask for an opinon from others, but asking for a cheaper variant isn't the best practice.

Better for the company as they can use their own for free and sell it to others that don't have engines I guess.

Unity. It's user-friendly, no need powerful PC.
The easiest is the RPG maker and it's extremely resourceful and still in Humble Bundle.

Serously, though, it depends. Do you want simple and easy, or complex and hard to use?

Well, if you want some easy to use, there are Stencyl and Construct 2.

Gamemaker studio (standard version is free) or Unity (free too until you sell 100,000 copies :P)

It depends if you want to stay with 2D or go to 3D later on. In the first case GameMaker will help you with an easy workflow and fast results but you will find the limits quite soon. Unity has a good workflow for 2D in the current version and also more options for later projects. There is a basic version that is free but the licence is quite heavy for hobby or starting indie projects.
As for Unity, you will not need the Pro version for the first few projects and you will learn a lot.
GameMaker and RPGMaker are nice programs but have both limited uses as for game types and target platforms.

What i am saying is, do your research on the game you want to make and choose the engine best suitable for the task. On the decision think about game type, target platform and look what you need to learn for the specific engine.
