Some of the new categories are disabled even if we can see them on the left side.

It's not possible to open topics in "Game Showcase" and "User Projects".

I didnt even realise those were things, looking at them I didn't even know 75% of those were a thing. Don't get much away from the usual deals, bugs, general, puzzle and off topic

More than half of them are new, as in like maybe a month old.

maybe you need developer role for creating game showcase, user projects is a mystery to me

This seems possible... but doesn't explain how NB264 did it, unless he got his developer role revoked?

If you check the date you can see his post is from 3 years ago, meaning either he or the devs moved it there later on, maybe that is why it worked?

I moved it the other day, when I saw the new categories, in a permanent effort to help categorize threads better. Only after MAH opened this thread I checked again and realized that options is no more.

edit: double checked, I moved it 3 days ago. I know for sure because I posted this right after that, about me not knowing this was live.

Humz so it was possible but not anymore, that is weird, maybe something went wrong and they decided to disable it again until that is fixed or whatever? Who knows, at least that explains how your 1 post is in there ^^

A mod answered this for one category, and it likely applies to both:

this category [User Projects] will be empty i think now. But fill with content after new guidelines are up.

View the thread I linked to for context.

Other new categories appear okay to post to, or at least existing threads can be moved to those other new categories.

I don't get why we need so many categories anyway. I always browse "All" and check for interesting threads, simply ignoring the rest, not paying any attention to categories at all. What's the benefit of having them?

It just allows for more flexibility. For example, a user might browse "All" once a day, but want to check "Deals" a few times a day to avoid missing out on time sensitive promotions. The separate category allows them to easily do so. It also allows us to highlight deals on the homepage. Or, a user could have no interest in joining a Steam group, so they want to filter out "Group Recruitment" discussions, instead of having them clutter the page. Or, maybe a user is bored, and they feel like solving a puzzle, they can quickly jump to the "Puzzle / Events" category and find one that catches their eye. Or, maybe a user stumbled on an add-on a few months ago but can't recall the name. They could browse "Add-ons / Tools" to quickly find it again.

Back to the topic, I disabled write permissions on the "Game Showcase" and "User Projects" categories until the guidelines are updated because those categories don't align with the current guidelines very well.
