So... I started collecting them and I have a dilemma. Should I sell every one I get or should I buy the ones I lack and then craft badges. It's either getting money for games or getting backgrounds, badges, emoticons and coupons. I'm leaning towards the first option because I'm thinking: It's 25 games so far I guess, in a year there will be 100-150 games with badges. And then what? I'd like to have them all, obviously. I would spend a lot of money on that and for what? I would never even come close to those who got all foil badges and stuff as I'm not rich. So it's not even about who plays the most or the best but who is the richest person on Steam. I know the decision is up to me and what I like but I'd like to know your opinion.

I think I'll just start selling them.

100-150 games...I wonder if there'll ever be a level cap. xP

I'd be more interested to know if there'll ever be a reason to go beyond 10. An extra showcase at 20 takes 20 badges to get to from 10, which if you're looking at cheap sets of cards is about $2.50 each, so $50. Bugger that.

Sell. Buy later for cheaper if you change your mind.

How about selling the cards you don't want and use that money to buy the ones you do want? Perhaps on the games you enjoy playing the most.

I reckon you may find that certain developers will start giving cards for different things such as achievements, forum activity etc.

These cards would probably be non-tradeable, and could only be used to craft badges.

Some developers (particularly of indie games) are really more about the gamers than the profits and I reckon some will want to reward the guys who play the most rather than the richest.

As for OP: There's good advice in these answers - use them to craft badges and BGs for the games you like, and sell the rest.

Can they do that? I mean, isn't this up to Valve? Don't they set the rules? It'd be awesome though! Badges for beating games, collecting achievements and so on. It should be the case with all cards and badges...

I'm really not sure - it seems like the developers need to have a hand in what happens, and with Dota and TF2 there were different rules.

It's still early days I guess

how do you get cards? You just open the game and leave it in background just like with tf2 and items/hats?

I crafted badges for Portal 2 and Half-Life 2 and then came to the conclusion I was better off selling/trading the cards for games.

Sell them, and you can rebuy them later when you think you can throw some money for badges or when you want to level to a specific level or a specific badge and they'll even cost less.

I don't have that many games in which you're able to get cards, but I'm currently thinking about keeping them and waiting to see what happens. Logically, when people make all the cards disappear by crafting badges with them etc., they will become more scarce and thus the price should go up. For example, if a game costs £10 and has 4 cards, when there are hardly any cards on market for that game, each card should be around £2? As it would cost £2.50 to get a card by creating an alt account and buying the game yourself.

However, if I turn out to be wrong, I'll probably just craft some badges with them, and sell any spares.

I crafted a few just to get to level 10 so I could get a profile showcase. Been selling all of mine since then.

I think I'll craft my Portal 2 badge because cards from this game seem to be very cheap.

I crafted a Portal 2 badge to get my profile showcase. This crafting thing is pretty cool though.

I am selling them and donde almost 5 dollars, with that i could buy cards for a game i want or a game. my only doubt in actually crafting cards is if i should get level 10 so i can maybe get foils, but with so few games i don´t know.

And why level 10? If its for the chance to get a foil they removed the level requirement for that.

This. Unless you care about levels, then trade the cards of games you don't like for those you do.

you should sell them immediately after they are added to steam. Then when it inevitably the price gets down you buy them again and kee the profits.

I sell the cards when they are at their highest value. This is usually right off or within a day or two. The three badges I made, I actually sold the cards, then bought them back at a much lower cost later on. I use the money I make to buy more games, some for cards. I made like $16 when they first hit and since then I have been buying a card game, on average, every time a new group of games is released. I make back the cost of the game or close to it, each time. Selling them is a great way to rack up games.

I have a feeling they are all going to lose value soon, except the few games that virtually no one has. With the changes to be made, it will be easier to get cards and I can't see them having much value. I have already seen some not so popular games have their cards bottom out within 2 hours of being released. Sell now on any cards of decent value. If you have to build badges, pick the cheap ones.

To me it's amazing. Now looks aside, old profile had more features out of the box. Compared to that new profile initially has less features and to get some of them back you need to gain levels. And that pretty much means spending money. So Valve took out features of Steam, makes you pay for them now, and people are still raving how awesome Valve is xD Amazing.

Granted, many of the showcases are completely new stuff and even those that previously were things out of the box usually allow you to have greater control over what they show. You may say you get less stuff but perhaps something you are more interested in, and have to pay for it with cards.

To that extent it's a pity initially you don't even get one showcase to chose from, so striving to get to level 10 seems (sadly) reasonable, in the new reality of feature-poor profile page. But the rest, eh, we'll see what they are going to change but for the most part as I see it as showing off how much money you have.

It would be great if you actually got cards for playing games. And if you could get all of them that way. For example there would be cards for easy stuff (like beating a game on easy) or rare cards for long and tideous stuff (beating a game on hard) and it would be great. People would play games way more and I think everyone would be happy. It would be all about skills and gaming. Now it's only about idling and showing how much money you really have. That kind of sucks...

Craft the badges for the games you like the best if you care about emoticons, backgrounds, and what not (also check the market to see which games put effort into their emoticons and wallpapers, since I know at least one game didn't put a lot of time into it cough Cubemen 2 cough). If you care more about XP (showcases, more friends) then just go for the cheapest sets. Sell all the rest, that way you can do a bit of both (I know the collectionist in me is making it hard for me to sell any cards, but I'm working on it)

When I first heard about this trading card thing, I though would get the cards for a game by doing challenges in the game like what they did during past sales where you could get coupons and free games for completing challenges in certain games. I enjoyed that because it got me to try out some games that I got as part of bundles and hadn't played yet, or go back and play some games I hadn't played in a while. It was a big disappointment when I got into the beta and saw that it's just a shitty cash grab by Valve to get people to sell these things on their market because they take a cut of each sale. You can only get half of the cards for a game by playing that game. Calling them "trading cards" is misleading because I haven't seen anyone actually trading them.

You can thank exploiters for that. The same reason that this Christmas sale was so underwhelming compared to the last one. If it was tied to challenges, achievements or whatever, people would use achievement unlockers or trainers so that cheaters would get it more quickly than honest players, which would piss everyone off. At least here, there's no way to unfairly earn the cards.

Also, the reason no one trades for the cards is because there are already so many bots that you don't have to.
Here is probably the most well known one. Tell me, why would I spend the time opening a thread and sorting through offers on Steamtrades when I could just add this bot and get better rates than 90 percent of offers you'll get?
