How does five copies of Skyrim sound?

This is currently just an interest thread, letting me know if it's worth saving up the dough for this. It will run separately from my normal monthly giveaways.

This one would be different in that, while I would have those five copies of Skyrim (and possibly back-up copies of Oblivion and Morrowind), I would not necessarily give all of them out. It will not be a simple test of who's the best entry, but who put the time and effort into their entries. If only two people are good enough, only two people will get a game and damn the rest. If somehow you're all good enough, then it will become a contest of who's the best (unless I decide to buy extra, which is, admittedly, unlikely).

It would also be different in that, while you can submit supplementary material such as music and artwork, writing would be the key portion of every entry. I would want you to create a character that you might use in the game, tell me who they are, what they like, what their history is, what sort of adventures they might get up to, being as detailed as you possibly can. I don't care about the quality (though quality is awesome and does tip my vote, obviously), more about the effort you put into it. If I feel that your entry is pretty awful, but you put a lot of effort and heart into it, you are still in the running.

What sort of timelength would you be interested in? I'm thinking at least two weeks, maybe three, for a giveaway of this magnitude. As for lore, don't worry if you're new to The Elder Scrolls. I'll be happy to field any lore questions you might have.

How does all of this sound to you to you guys? If you have any questions or if I'm not clear on something (I've been awake far too long and I'm just about to nap), just ask and I'll happily answer them for you to the best of my ability.

Remember, this is just an interest thread right now. Don't go rushing off to design your Altmer thief in skimpy clothing just yet.

sounds great, but i already haz skyrim. Also, writing being the key sounds good, because i'm not a good artist.

Wow, thanks for this, it's time to unveil my creative vein after so long again :)
It may be a little harder for non native english speaker like me, but that's what's making it even more interesting :D

That's pretty cool. I'm not sure what I can do. But I'm pretty interested in this, man. I'll wait to see if more people are going to be in, too. And we'll see who'll come up with the best stuff.

I'm down for this- sounds like a neat challenge.
The incentive is worth the effort too. No doubt you'll be flooded with a bunch of viable entries!

This sounds like a great idea, i'm definitely going to participate. Got already some ideas haha

And oh, i have skyrim already, so i don't need an extra copy, in the unlikely event that i'd win :d

Sounds like a good challenge - let me know when it kicks off and I'll try to impress.

Sounds like a very generous idea falcon, and an interesting one at that.

I have several questions; basically, we have to make a character profile? I'm just wondering how long you would expect the piece of writing to be. Would we be writing about him/her in the past tense so that he has already been on adventures, or is it about what he might do? Also, if you have no knowledge about the The Elder Scrolls, do you have to do some research?

Hope you don't mind me asking those questions.

Anyhow, in my opinion, the contest should run for around two weeks. Maybe add a few extra days for contestants if needed.

Essentially a character profile, yes. It should be as long as you can make it. As for tense, you can use both. And yes, you would, but I know a lot about the era, so I'm willing to answer any questions people would have about it.

Sounds good, im not good at writing, but i do like creating characters.
Will a picture of the character help? i´m better at drawing (i´ll still add the character profile).

It'd help, sure, but the writing is the key part.

How about I model a character in 3ds max, be creative and think of his story, his quests, goals and arch-nemesis, would it be worth the effort for Skyrim ?

I'm kinda confused whether I like this idea or not.

I am relatively good at composing songs, and was pretty good at creating characters with a sound backstory for DnD games. I certainly do not want to wright an TES themed song, cause that would almost surely be lame or at least power-metal (and I'm not into composing that kind of stuff).

And I don't think I could make a character good enough for TES setting, cause, truth to speak, I don't really like it or know it well enough. I LOVE gameplay and atmosphere of the games though.

It's a tough one. I'm afraid I can't do a decent piece for this particular terms, so I'm gonna say nay for now.

Hmm, I'm not particularly fond of the idea of a primarily writing based contest. I'd happily spend some time doing something more abstract, in a more visual medium, but while I don't think I'm lacking in creativity, writing just doesn't interest me as much.

Also, while winning Skyrim would be awesome, I would feel a little guilty going for a game that I'm pretty sure my laptop can't run (or certainly not particularly well, in any case).

That's why this is just an interest thread. I'm just listening to what everyone is saying for now. I may decide that this isn't worth it if too many people have an issue with it.

Not that interested, for the following reasons:

  • I probably won't play Skyrim much. I spent many hours on Arena and Daggerfall, but few on Morrowind and Oblivion. That's true for most games these days, but I'll feel worse not playing a $50 one than a $10 one.
  • Writing in a limited setting is less appealing to me than having freedom to select what I write.
  • I won't be able to dedicate a lot of time to this, and since that's the main criterion I might as well not enter.

Not a bad idea, but not for me. For me, it seems too restrictive, and I'd feel my contribution is either too boring, or too strange to fit in. (That said, I already have Skyrim, so my voice shouldn't matter that much here.)

Sounds like a fun idea actually. I already have Skyrim though, so I probably won't participate. Glad to see more and more ideas to make fun giveaways though. Kenken(which I really do like), That bastardly maze, and your giveaways for creative people with talent. I need to think of something interesting to do sometime...

I think having it run for 3 weeks will do just fine.

In the meantime i'll keep waiting untill i get a chance to do some drawing, maybe with this next one, who knows?
Great job jade, nice way to push this thing forward.

Well, so far, while there's been a lot of support for this, I'm actually leaning more towards not doing this one. It doesn't seem to be as good an idea due to writing being the key part of it. I could ask you to make something, anything, to do with Skyrim, but that just seems like a barely different version of my normal giveaways. I'll have to think about this some more.

Uhm.. I also think that writing shouldn't be the key part of this, english is not my first language - and while I love to draw I would probably fail at writing something good. I assume there are europeans that feel the same way about it. Also, 1 other game for people that already have skyrim (maybe morrowind, if you want to stick to elder scrolls?) would be awesome too.
