Hey guys! I hope you're doing great. I enjoy reading other people's thoughts and experiences, so I thought it would be nice to be the one sharing for a change. Of course, if you're not particularly interested, that's fine too. The link to the small train is at the end. :)

About 2 years ago, I opened a fundraiser because I was in some deep debt, mostly medical stuff related to my wife's delivery. A few smaller debts were my fault, since I was never taught proper financial decision-making. I was very depressed and those were pretty rough times. However, quite some time has passed and... we're still working on it, but things are going really well.

Yeah, raising a baby is pretty damn expensive—especially one who, for some reason, loves to poop about 3 minutes after he just got his diaper changed, lol. We're working really hard. My wife is doing an excellent job with our toddler, teaching him things every day and making sure he's growing as healthy and smart as possible. I've been working night shifts and weekends for almost a year to provide for them the best I can.
We're succeeding big time, because Aaron is the loveliest toddler I've ever seen! Beautiful smile, loves to hug and kiss us, shares his toys with everyone, and his flirtatious little look melts everyone.

The best part about killing my brain cells with night shifts is that the debts I had with five different entities are now down to just two, which is pretty damn great. It’s taken a lot of time and effort, but it's been so worth it—especially because I've learned a ton of things (the hard way, of course). I'll make sure to teach them all to mini-me so he doesn't make the same mistakes I did. Hopefully his mistakes will be cooler, like messing up his own rocket or something.

Right now, I’m dealing with a small speed bump. I broke the side of my right hand a couple of weeks ago, so my income has dropped a bit and some new costs have popped up—but it's fine. I got some much-needed rest, had time to look for new jobs and attend interviews, and got to spend more time with my baby.
The only issue is I haven’t been able to play much during my free time. I’ve mostly been watching other people play online, or reading a visual novel here and there. But yeah, 'gaming' with just my left hand is not very fun, lol. Maybe you guys know of a game that's simple to control but still fun? I’m open to suggestions.

My plans for the next few years are pretty simple:
Within 1 year, we’ll move to a better apartment and I’ll finish paying off my remaining debts (and when I do, I'll celebrate with an awesome train!).
In 2–3 years, I want to buy a car, get a fish tank, and finally get a Steam Deck so I can play more than two hours a week.
And maybe—still under discussion—within 5–6 years, we’ll move to another country.
I’ve always dreamed of living in Norway, but my wife’s a bit afraid of the language barrier. She’d prefer somewhere like the U.S. or Canada. We’ll see how everything goes.

So overall, I’m feeling good—motivated, job-hunting to see if I can get paid a little better (and sleep like a normal human again), and working on being the best version of myself while enjoying the little things in life. Maybe that’s why I’m writing this and making my first train ever in the first place. It’s been a long and difficult journey, but at the end of the day, I wouldn’t change a thing. And if I make it to 70 and still remember anything from this time, I know I’ll feel proud and probably wish I could live it all over again. Hell, I’m still living it and I already miss it.

To close this, I want to leave you with a silly but sincere bit of advice:
There’s always help. Try your family, try your coworkers, try your friends, try the internet, try tutorials, try ChatGPT, try vitamins, try medicine, try therapy, try books, try art, try sports—try whatever you need to improve whatever you need. But never, ever give up.

Vroom vroom!
Here comes the train! 🚅

Also, feel free to add me! I love checking out people’s profiles, seeing what everyone’s playing, and growing my friends list.
Thanks for reading :)

Several Puzzle/Logic games can be played with one hand, if you enjoy those. Like Hexcells, Tametsi, nonogram games, etc.

Good job on repaying your debts, little by little! I've been indebted for a few years after having to borrow for grad school, and it's not a pleasant feeling. But working your way through those is a great accomplishment, it requires discipline but it seems you're managing so congratulations!

If you don't mind me asking, where are you located now? I spent 7 of the last 8 years living in the US and it definitely wasn't for me. I always try to challenge people to think twice or thrice before deciding to move there - if you expect a welcoming place, that US is gone. Still might work if you just want to raise a lot of money quickly and don't mind living in a very isolating place for a foreigner, but if I could go back in time, I would pick a different country. Offering my two cents as a point of view, but if you (or anyone else reading this) thinks differently, feel free to post your point of view as well instead of simply fighting mine and my lived experience.

As for games playable with the left hand? Slay the Spire is the first that comes to mind. There are no timed events in the game, so you can take all your time with it. On a PC, it's fully playable mouse-only for instance, and I guess it can also be played with keyboard only but that sounds a lot harder to me hehe

Anyway, good luck with your endeavors!

Thanks! It really is an accomplishment, and I also wish you the best with your debt as well. 😁

We're located in Colombia currently. I'm Colombian and my wife is Peruvian, so yeah. To be honest, I've never been a fan of the US for several reasons, but the only reason we consider it an option is because she has family living there, so we would have familiar faces and a guaranteed place where to land, as opposed to the other countries. You mentioned that you would've picked a different country given the chance - may I ask what countries do you like?

Man, I've heard wonders about Slay the Spire, definitely will try it when I can. Thanks again.

Got it. Having family there totally helps with some issues I experienced like isolation, so you're off to a much better start already.

As for other countries, the grass is always greener right haha - I don't know the shortcomings of my choices, but at the time I applied to grad school, I had the option to go to Spain or the UK. Some of the companies I recruited for after grad school told me I could have applied to one of their European campuses if I had gotten my Masters in Europe, so that would have allowed me to go to the Netherlands, Belgium or Switzerland. All of those sounded better to me than the US, but again - I don't know the bad sides of living there hahaha

On a personal level I probably would have stuck with Spain or Portugal, just because I'm from Brazil, I'm familiar with the language from both countries, and I feel a lot in common between the mediterranean and the latino culture. I had friends that lived in the Netherlands and in Belgium and while they say those were great countries, they felt they were a bit 'cold' culturally to a Brazilian. It's all conjectures at this point but who knows 🤷

Hey! good luck with that recovery man.

If i had to think about a game that could only be played with one hand i'd probably pick Pureya its a game kinda like ufo 50 but with minigames back to back that only need 2 buttons to play. its made by the same spanish studio that did "majotori" and "golfing over it" wich are also worth checking out since the controls could also be used with just one hand. :)

Most one handed games like point and clicks seem to be mouse only, which considering you broke your right arm might be a bit of a challenge. (I’m left handed and can’t use the mouse in my left hand lol)
Maybe the game Before your Eyes could be a good one, since you control it by blinking!

friend request sent, I don't typically like to say too much when people talk about their personal lives, I don't know, I feel it's more of a situation of "I know I'm doing good and I'm happy about myself, I don't need you to tell me"?? Short of thing? Like it has an opposite effect? Sounds weird when I say it out loud, Maybe I'm wrong, but anyways. Sounds to me that you're doing a great job, especially as a husband and dad and wish you a speedy recovery :)

For one handed games, like you mentioned, Visual Novels and games from genres with simple controls are your best bet. Some good picks, from the ones you haven't played, are the house in fata morgana, scarlet hollow and subsurface circular. Or maybe Full Metal Daemon Muramasha if you can get it on Jast USA or GOG.

Interesting take! I can definitely see someone replying with something like, “Yes, I know I’m doing fine, I just said it, so?” or something silly like that, whereas other people might say, “I appreciate your support!” So it really depends on the person. But I agree, it’s usually better not to say too much.

You’re the real MVP! I actually read a bit of Full Metal Daemon Muramasa some years ago and loved it. I don’t know why I didn’t finish it back then, but now that I remember it exists, I’ll definitely read it. Thank you!!

You can play all the games that just need mouse OR keyboard ! :p
Then it depends on your subjective tastes.

From your backlog (as i don't want to cause you more debt) :

  • there is for example Crypt of the necrodancer, this one is keyboard only.
  • Beholder 1 is mouse only, same for Orwell. And ofc the amazing One finger death punch 2 !
  • Then you've ofc all the point'n'click. For example you've Detective Grimoire in backlog that is really funny if you need some laugh.
  • I didn't notice any in your backlog except the old but great Civilization 3, but there are also all strategy / tactic games, turn-based like Civilization or real-time like Company of Heroes.

Ah and wish you a quick recovery ! Glad you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and well done for being an awesome dad.

Thanks! I really appreciate you checking my embarrassing backlog - that’s super helpful. I’ll be playing those over the next few days!

And yes, you got me. I’ve never been a fan of strategy/tactics games; however, I recently tried the demo of The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy- and loved it. It’s not a true strategy game like the ones you mentioned, but it was a great way to ease into the genre, and I’ll try some more in the near future.

Recently I've been playing Forza Horizon 5 a lot and for most of the driving (with automatic gearbox) you can use WASD plus space for handbrake. You likely won't be winning online races, but everything else is doable.

Why would you even contemplate moving to the US?
Not just because of the current situation but also the financial doom called Healthcare, or lack thereof.
What do you think will happen to you financially if you get more kids or health issues happen?
And if you two are serious of moving somewhere else eventually, don't get a fishtank!
Save your money, you will need it.
Regardless, good luck to you 3!

A very grounded comment, I appreciate it. 😁 It’s true, the US has several problems, but my wife has family there, and it would be much easier to establish ourselves. Plus, it’s not like the situation in Colombia is much better lol. Our dumbass president is ruining the health system and pretty much everything that was decent. But yes, we are considering different places for that same reason.

And don’t worry — I’ve already thought about it, and my parents would love to have a fish tank. They’ll take good care of it, so I’ll gift it to them in case we move.

"I was never taught proper financial decision-making", I think no one gets it taught? Also I think it can't be taught... You can say don't buy this and that because if you do x,y,z and you can't because x,y,z... But people think with feelings so it's a matter of chance if they get it or not... (or like addicts reach the point when change is needed to really understand)
There's this youtuber Caleb Hammer who does a show called Financial Audit (in America) and you can see how illogical and based on feelings people are about finances/spending....

Spending is absolutely something we teach our kid. "If you buy this now, it costs this much, or if you wait, it will be on sale and you'll save X." "Was this X worth it? It wasn't as tasty as we'd hoped. Maybe we can save the money and make something at home that tastes better." "You can buy this now, but because you don't have enough money for it, you'll have to save up for it to pay us back before we give it to you."

Up to a point. But unless you loanshark your kid with compound interest, the world will still have some nasty surprises waiting.

I agree, and I can see your point, but I also think money can be seen in many different ways.

I always thought money was just for me to spend carelessly and enjoy, but no. If someone had told me to save a percentage of it, invest in stocks, or put it into a start-up instead of buying 200 books and Blu-rays that will take me 10 years to read/watch (yes, that’s how I spent the money from my first few working years), I think things could’ve been very different.

There are ways to make money with money, and those skills can definitely be taught to children. I’ve met teenagers who are very conscious about this, and they truly value money and what they can do with it.

Yeah, really depends on the person. I also heard some girl say something like we are consumers etc. and we should just spend the money, instead of saving it. I guess in that logic for bigger needs take a loan...

I just think that really depends if you trust/value that persons knowledge who says it... As if I tell it to some random kid, he would be like whatever, unc....
But all we can is try to teach other people/our kids (or even ourselves) and hope they/we understand.

I have family from Norway. A lot of Norwegians speak English. She was taught some time around 4th grade. When I visited as a kid, I didn't have a lot of trouble. Also, the language isn't as bad to learn as say...English. 😀 So learning a few simple things won't be bad

I played Civilization 5 a lot one handed, when stuck under a sleeping baby, with a mouse. But you couldn't change the money for trades. And...Banner Saga I think.

All the best to you and your young family! Keep fighting! :)

Assuming you're comfortable operating a mouse with your left hand, I'd say any mouse-only game without strict timing requirements would be a good choice. Point & click adventure games are an obvious choice, but there's also roguelite deckbuilders like Slay the Spire and Monster Train which are turn-based, so you can take all the time you need. If you don't like deckbuilders, there's also tactical roguelites like Into the Breach and Invisible Inc that are also turn-based and can be played solely with the mouse.

If you want something other than mouse-only games, many logic puzzle games are turn-based and have simple control schemes which only require directional input which can be done with the WASD keys, and the only additional keys you need are maybe one or two (if any) actions keys plus Z to undo and R to restart. Having said that, basically any turn-based game with no time limit can be played with just the left hand, so turn-based RPGs fit the bill if you want something more 'epic', though it's likely gonna be unconventional with the default control scheme, but many games on PC offer customizable keybinds anyway, so perhaps you can adjust them so all keys are covered by your left hand.

These are just a few suggestions based on the games I've played. I'm sure there are many other great games out there that can be played by the left hand only. :)

Glad I could help! Into the Breach would be a great choice since it's fairly easy to get into as it has relatively simple mechanics, but still has a good amount of depth as there are various ways you can use these mechanics. It takes some brainpower to 'master'. Many say it's like "chess with mechs". 😁
