After about 9 attempts, I finally beat the flagship on "easy" but it feels like it took longer. The Zoltan Cruiser was my victorious ship. For those still trying, I found this wikia article invaluable. Now onto "normal" difficulty or Advanced Edition content. The poll options go to 50+ for the real unfortunate/determined/masochistic players.

I got it at my first attempt on easy. Never got the same luck at higher difficulties

Kudos if that first attempt was with Advanced Edition content turned on. If not, maybe try tackling the AE content on "easy."

I have never played with the Advanced edition disabled :x
but I did like 15 attempts on normal, and then I decided to play it easy... so idk if it counts :P

Divide in half? 15/2 +1 = 8~9 attempts? Idk either but I was expecting everyone to count their tries across all difficulties.

I can't remember how many tries it took, but it was a lot. In fact the first time I won had a fairly poetic ending as a final shot from the flagship, just as it was destroyed, managed to also destroy me. Still counted as a win.

I find the game to be too luck based to keep playing it any more though. One too many negative events and there's nothing you can do. The final battle is such a jump in difficulty as well. I've often had runs where everything was trivial right up to the flagship, at which point I find it counters me perfectly.

Yeah, the luck aspect can be annoying but I have more beef with how exponentially more difficult the boss is compared to any prior encounter. It's like finishing kindergarten and getting sent to college..

Actually quite often the normal enemies in the last sectors with 4 bars of shields are way stronger than the boss.

Possible but at least you have the option to flee which I usually do since defeating them is not important in preparation for the boss.

And yes, luck is very much central to this game.

I'm not the best person to ask about this because I've never played the Advanced Edition. I started playing the game before that update and since I couldn't win then, I didn't see any reason to turn on what looked like more difficult content until after beating the boss..

AE content adds a bunch of stuff, but other than the Flak Cannon II, most of it is shit.

Playing the DRM free edition, I have played like 200 hours and I havent killed that bastard. Beating the ship is not the problem, the problem is the second time you have to beat it.

Not sure if I am making a mistake by always playing with the Advanced content tho

The game is certainly hard enough without the AE content. Some say the Advanced Edition is easier, some say it's harder.

Probably all depends on how lucky you are.

AE content weapons are mostly junk. Having AE enabled just reduces your chances of finding good weapons (burst laser II = win)

There are also the new systems though. Allowing the enemy in this game to use mind control is daunting.

I have long ago equated FTL's "easy" difficulty to any other game's normal or even hard setting. Beating it on easy is quite an achievement in itself.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ehhh ... maybe.

I have been finding that games are just too easy and I usually have to turn the difficulty up to max or the 2nd highest option. Even then, some games are too easy. For example, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning on max difficulty was nothing, I never once had to worry about dying.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Now that you have beat it legit once, get the no pursuit mod for FTL... makes the game significantly more enjoyable. Basically just removes the fleet pursuit so you can spend more time exploring etc.

EDIT: The game is difficult as hell on easy... Normal and Hard are strictly for the masochists out there.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think I'll give AE a try on "easy" and then once I beat that I'll do normal. I've looked into a few mods. The one you mentioned sounds cool especially since I love exploring every nook and cranny in games. I've also looked into the infinite mod which replaces the boss with endless sectors of increasingly difficult enemies. That sounded like more fun to me since I think the boss is outrageously more difficult than anything else in the game.

8 hours? So you've only launched it to customize your settings :P
But as you can tell from the comments, expect to put lots of time into the game before beating the boss.

Somewhere between 6 and 9, I'm sure. I had a lot of early luck. What I do remember is that my 5th or 6th attempt I had a very good fire arsenal... so that's about when I discovered that the Flagship had a backup AI.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Setting fire to enemy ships is perhaps the most satisfying things to do in FTL.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Aye--and it bears mentioning that I always have the expansion active, so the Flagship has its hacking and such. That fire-and-failure run was because my strategy all game had been to target the O2 system and suffocate my enemies. When the AI took over I basically had useless fire-bombs against a ship with no oxygen and enough lasers to take the shield down for an instant.

Getting into stalemates is the worse. That happened to me with the Mantis Cruiser. I put to much emphasis on boarding and then I lost all three of my Mantis fighters. I was in sector 6 and my weapons just weren't good enough but my engines and shields were doing a good enough job.

You have much to learn about the flagship. Potential spoiler: There are three stages to the flagship. After each stage, it loses certain systems but jumps away and completely repairs its hull.

There are three features that I'd love to see implemented for FTL and Steam achievements is one of them. The other, more important ones IMO, are multiple save slots and Steam Workshop support.

I think I did it on my 3rd try on easy. This was before the Advanced Edition came out. I tried and made it a few times on normal, but didn't beat it. The first time I played with the Advanced Edition I made it to the boss on easy, but it totally owned me. It put a jammer thing on my shields and I didn't have any upgrade in engines. I then realized in the AE that engine upgrades are more important than shields. I eventually just barely beat the boss in AE.

Permalink

No engine upgrades at all!? That sounds like a tragic idea even without the Advanced Edition content.

Permalink

I got some kind of powerful beam type weapon early on that required a lot of power, so I spent all my upgrades on reactor power and shields. It took a while to charge, but it would one-shot kill anything if you got its shields down. I needed the shields to absorb shots while it charged, then I would missile their shield room to bring down the shields, time the laser right and I could. I had a teleporter and a couple of Mantis crew that I also used to kill off easier ships. I pretty much cruised through to the boss without much resistance, but I didn't even survive the first round with it. It put the jammer on my shields and just had its way with me.

How did you manage against ships with defense drones? I've had a lot of luck with the teleporting bomb. Renders defense drones useless.

Just the other day I was thinking multi-ship encounters would be awesome. It'd also open the door to co-op gameplay. I know multiplayer would be difficult to implement with the pause feature, but co-op might be doable.

The first time I beat it probably is my favorite/most epic personal gaming moment. It was after 25-30 hours of losing, using the Kestrel, B I think, and at one point, 6 or so sectors in, I had 1 hull point and almost just ditched the run and started over. Luckily I decided to go for the achievement for going from 1 hull to full.
I almost lost the final flagship too because I was trying to hard to use my bio-beam to kill the crew rather than the hull and barely changed my weapons in time to finish him off.
The thing that makes it so memorable though is that I had had an awful day at work (a friday so I had the whole weekend to be dread going back on monday) and was just trying to distract myself so I wouldn't think about it. Finally winning completely changed my mood and saved me a lot of stressing out that weekend.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Winning certainly brightened up my night. And killing off all but one of the flagship crew is one of the suggested tactics. It makes one of the later stages - where it uses the teleporter - much easier since there's no one to board you.

Permalink

My tactic usually is to alternate between suppressing whatever stage I'm currently on, cloak, drone, etc, and keeping the missile barrage disabled.

Yeah, taking out that triple leto missile launcher is top priority. I don't even worry about anything else until I have that weapon and its crew member completely neutralized.

I tried on easy : died
I tried with infinite money : died
I tried with infinite hull + money : died, my crew died.
I tried with infinite hull + money + crew : died. It destroyed EVERYTHING on my ship, like 50% was on fire, 50% without oxygen, and nothing worked.
