After about 9 attempts, I finally beat the flagship on "easy" but it feels like it took longer. The Zoltan Cruiser was my victorious ship. For those still trying, I found this wikia article invaluable. Now onto "normal" difficulty or Advanced Edition content. The poll options go to 50+ for the real unfortunate/determined/masochistic players.

That's fine. I estimated mine too. My stats say 8 but I had to delete my saves at one point and lost 1 or 2 playthroughs.

Haha. I got distracted by other games too, which isn't that hard since FTL can be so despairing. I was in the midst of an awesome playthrough with a full crew and great gear but when I got to the final sector, I didn't have the heart to face the flagship and lose it all. I let that save sit for a year and when I came back to play, I had forgotten a lot about the game and botched up the playthrough.

Only managed to beat it once using the green Zoltan Ship. It was mainly luck though. FTL is so hard compared to their new game Convoy.

Luck plays a large part in FTL. I've played a game where I find awesome weapons and a full crew at no cost. I've also played a game where I find just about nothing and have to spend all my scrap for those things.

And I have my eye on Convoy. Do you have it? If so, how is it?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah I have convoy. It's fun game but there's no urgency like FTL where you're chased. Convoy plays very similar but you can take your time with the main quest and focus on side quests/random encounters to upgrade your vehicles.

FTL is still a better game imo. Only thing convoy does better is the combat. Kind of feels like a turnbased Mad Max Fury Road game.

Nein! I said I wanted it out of my head ASAP! But I'd re-watch it anytime for a good chuckle.
Which reminds me: I name all of my ships and crew after TV shows. My playthrough just prior to my victory was the Planet Express. Oddly enough, Fry now holds the record for most combat kills.

Zoltan was my first win too... not sure if it's the shield or luck, or maybe I just happen to like that ship and tried harder. Just last week did it with the mantis cruiser, that was intense down-to-the-wire on the final battle.

Although it can feel like a bit of cheating... there is an easy-to-apply mod that basically disables the pursuing fleet by delaying it for 10m turns or so... which gives you the opportunity to visit all systems. Yes, it makes the game easier in some respects, but I like how it turns the game on it's head. I would recommend only trying that after your first victory though, for the aforementioned 'cheaty' nature of it.

The flagship seemed much more manageable when I beat it with the Zoltan compared to other attempts. I don't believe that's all because of the shields - they only last for a short while and don't recharge (they're more helpful in shorter encounters). It was probably just luck.

I tried the Mantis before that but I think I put too much emphasis on boarding and hand-to-hand combat resulting in an underpowered weapons system. I ended up losing the 3 Mantis crew members that I start with (2 because blast doors blocked my escape when low on health and 1 because I accidentally teleported him onto an automated ship) and then I starting getting into stalemates in sector 6.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

On the subject of boarding an automated ship... it can be done, but you need to upgrade your teleporter to do it. IIRC, level one is not enough, but on level two it becomes possible to beam in, damage the system in that room, then get back just before your health runs out. On level three the teleporter's recharge time becomes almost comfortable, recharging even before the system is down. The HUGE advantage fighting an automated ship has is that there's no crew to hinder your melee assault. Good times.

The only kind of ship you probably shouldn't be boarding even when you have a team of mantis boarders is one which has a cloak. Apart from that, caution is advised whenever there's asteroids in the system... Feels so bad when your henchmen die on that ship because they're spaced along with the enemy crew.

Another fun trick I like to pull is use mind control on an enemy, then when the effect is almost down, teleport them to your own ship for easily picking him off.

I just use Rockmen for boarding automated ships, 50% more HP gives them a pretty big safety buffer.

Permalink

And it's really fun to set their rooms on fire while your rockmen are pummeling the crew to death

Yes, this too. Drop shields, fire beam, Rockman boarding party.....good times, good times.

Permalink

Rockmen or Mantis are definitely the best for hand-to-hand combat but finding them is all dependent on luck.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I hadn't upgraded my teleporter because running around the enemy ship when I was low on health and waiting for the recharge worked well enough... until blast doors. Cloaked ships are manageable as long as they don't have those - just run around until it uncloaks. I've had my fighters spaced with the enemy but not because of asteroids... I wasn't paying close enough attention to the enemy hull level and accidentally nuked their ship with my guys on it :(

Yea but only on Easy so far. Also while powerleveling your crew (= unnecessarily prolonging a fight against a ship that can't get through your shields) is not technically cheating it does give you an unfair advantage.

I wouldn't consider that an unfair advantage. You're making use of a weaker ship to train your crew.

Nah, maybe they didn't beat it in first place? Maybe they just 'trolling' to feel better about themselfes? Who knows.
I myself sometimes still wonder how I was able to beat it on first run. Recently I lost basically because of my one little stupid mistake. I had great ship, big crew and everything. One mistake during fight, on jump into wrong sector and my ship was heavilly crippled with only one guy left.
Yet still, my first run was like a flawless victory. I guess I just had a big luck.

It was the fourth time I actually got there. I couldn't tell you how many ships died without getting there, but it was definitely the fourth time I saw it. First time took me by surprise and crushed me, second time I died to the secret weapon, third time my ship was trashed before I got there and I had no chance, and the fourth time was a win.

Permalink

I finished hard mode with each ship exactly once, so there's no "most successful ship" unless you count how many attempts it took to finish.

I don't remember which one was the easiest (probably Crystal B or Lanius B), but the most difficult ones were Stealth B and Slug B for sure.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What about your most successful ship across easy and normal difficulty? Also, I was about to try a run with the Stealth A until I realized it didn't even have shields. Can you buy those later like you can buy sensors for the Mantis cruiser?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I finished normal mode with each ship only once as well, just like with hard mode. Then I took a 1 year break before trying out hard mode. I didn't pay attention to statistics, really. I think I finished easy mode with maybe 10-15 ships before moving to normal mode.

Stealth A has excellent starting weapons and engines and it starts with cloaking. It's all about proper timing. Thanks to cloaking and fast charging weapons, it's almost guaranteed that you will attack first and easily dodge first attack, often resulting in enemy weapons being disabled before they get to damage you. Mini beam can hit even 4 rooms on some ships if you aim it properly.

As with all Stealth ships, encountering ships with drones is tricky, but doable. And yes, you can buy shields in stores.
