I have an 8yo brother who loves playing video games with me, but so far I haven't found a ton of games he and I can play on the same laptop without being online. I do have 2 GameCube controllers, a Wii U GC adapter, a special driver, and XPadder. So I am able to use those to play games, but only if they support two controllers, one controller and a keyboard player, or two keyboard players. That's because XPadder can bind controller inputs to any keyboard key, so games like Dead Pixels work fine once I get the controls set up. The games I've found so far are listed below, so check the list before suggesting a game. The games can be non-steam, but need to at least run on PC.

Games I've found:
Dead Pixels
Pinball FX2 (Pass 'n Play)
Arena Gods (A goddamn blessing, this game)
Expendabros
Eggnog+
Iron Snout
Max Gentleman
Sixgun 3 (This game fucking ROCKS)
Party Jousting
Timberman
Oh...Sir!
Trackmania Nations Forever (Pass 'n Play)
Super Smash Bros. Melee (with dolphin)
Any GameCube game (dolphin again)
Badland
Worms
Brawlhalla (great game also)
N: The Way of the Ninja (
Really* good game also)

Have you tried Ibb & Obb? It is kinda complicated and you have to think quick sometimes but its pretty awesome.
Edit: Foul Play has a pretty nice story as well.

The LEGO games on steam. They're not only child friendly, but also genuinely good.

Check out Rayman Origins/Legends, Trine series and Battleblock Theater. They're all really fun in co-op.

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris (4 player with controllers on pc), NFS, Borderlands, Battleborn, Overwatch... When I was 8 I kicked ass at Mario Bros 2 on the NES. Think my skills were better than now xD.
