Someone doesn't like you, gains access to your account and asked to have it terminated. o_o
If someone doesn't want to use steam anymore, why not ignore it.

I disagree with this new tool too, but steam needs to have, at least, a confirmation with steam mobile if someone wants to delete his account, after all, we're forced to use that app.

Or do something like you can request deletion after 3 months of non-usage (alternatively: when you request, if you use within 3 months, it gets canceled).

Seems like Valve clarified to the page:

"Due to the significance of fulfilling a termination request, Steam Support will require that users provide thorough Proof of Ownership prior to termination of the account in question."

So basically if they can claim account for themselves, they can terminate it too.

I think that's still quite a problem. There have been cases of accounts being overtaken, even though if often only temporarily.
Now that's already quite a bad thing, but complete and irreversible termination is way worse.

I agree. While I understand some of the reasons why someone would legitimately want to remove an account, I believe that there should be a cooldown period before it actually happens.

Something like the aforementioned non-use requirement, or an option to restore the account within the first 3 (or so) months.

My first thoughts too.

I suppose if someone felt they were addicted to Steam and/or gaming and it wasn't doing them good then they might want to delete it. Maybe parents with the log-in cerdentials of their children too if they thought they were spending too much time on Steam.

Generally speaking though, I can't see it being used very often.

Honestly, just let someone use the account if that happens.

Changing the log-in credentials is obviously easier.

Inventory can be better protected than account. Phisher can't steal these juicy unusuals and arcanas > rage delete?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Inventory has the exact same protection as the account: authenticator.
Deleting is done through the Support page, which is an entirely separate account from the main Steam account. Ad they also need to supply something that proves they are the real owner of the account before Support approves the account deletion.
So, again: how would they do it?

Wrong. It's very easy to trigger 7/15 days ban for trading and selling/buying stuff. When my phone broke month ago I had to wait 2 weeks before I could fully use my account again, though I could log in and play games perfectly fine. Seeing one thing likely to trigger such ban are repeated attempts to break in, I'd say it';s indeed very likely hacker can get in but be hit with automated trade lock and be unable to do anything but rage delete items (which requires zero confirmation in game), rage delete games using that new option, and attempt to rage-delete account. As for the fact the support could ask you for proof, vast majority of that proof is on your steam account page and if you happened to save your CC data in steam, or attacker has a trojan in your system, you can pretty much say bye bye to account.

Again: Steam support account and Steam account are two different things. And deletion is done through the support account only. Not to mention that in reality all "permanent" game removals can be revoked by the user, and so far there doesn't seem to be a time limit on them; with the current implementation, they are barely more than a more intricate way of hiding a game from the library.

hell no, thats the same as facebook pretending to delete your
data while you've been harvested and sold a 100times over

first and foremost:

"shit" (ones account) barely exists anyway ... > turn private and your practically inaccessible
for others, except for the crap you've posted here and there which they won't even delete
+

What will happen to content I posted in other areas?
Some community content is not removed upon termination. This includes
things like content that you posted in Steam community hubs, as well as
comments or posts that you left on other profiles.

i'd imagine this to be one of the prime reasons to delete
ones account and they don't even delete your shyte ...

What will happen to my Steam wallet balance?
Your Steam wallet and the funds within it will no longer
be available once the account has been terminated.

obviously once you put money into steam it aint worth a damn lol

Can I regain access to my account once it has been terminated?
No. Once Steam support has terminated the account, it cannot be restored.

of course you could they just won't ... should be funny for the ones who
lose their accounts and get it deleted by someone hahaha ...

Those people can create alternate accounts, but this makes it that much harder to track.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Those alt accounts could be discovered while using the Steamrep but now essentially what the all knowing Valve wiz kids have done is give scammers, impersonators and the like that have a Trade ban by Valve and/or Steamrep banned the real possibility to delete their banned accounts, wipe their footprints and tracks and start all over again.

If people set their profile to public, and got similar schemes going on with their befriend alts, then yes.
Or one could google for similar descriptions, etc. etc...

So all a scammer can do is make a profile private, right? In which case the ability to delete an account doesn't help scammers in any way.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, steamrep & co got a history per account. You can also search for certain account stuff directly.

If the account is deleted, some of those options won't be possible anymore.

But if they keep history they could easily adapt to the account being deleted.

Comment has been collapsed.

There IS a good reason for it, even if it sounds silly. Valve is legally required to have all kinds of tax papers filled out, as anyone who has sold 200 things on the community market knows. They HAVE to follow the laws in regards to money and taxes, and the authenticator basically helps ease the entire situation, where people can't easily make fake accounts and sell through them, because they need separate authenticators for each account. It makes the taxes a lot more bearable, since they don't have to track down all of these people with multiple accounts and such anymore.

Allowing you to delete your account isn't something they have to follow laws or file taxes over. They just let you do it, because they aren't obligated to do anything more.

Permalink

How exactly does "less duplicate accounts" means "less tax papers"? Accounts are just lines in their database. Real and duplicate behave exactly the same way.

I don't see the benefit in having this feature. I predict that only bad things will come about, thanks to this. An asshole gets their hands on your account? Bye bye account! You happen to change your mind after deleting it? Pfft, oh fucking well! Why can't Valve work on features that people actually ask for?! Like the one that has to do with being able to disable group event pop-ups? Ugh.

Support Account & Steam Accounts aren't linked. They could simply create new account & use some social engineering.

"Dear, Steam Support!

I have decided to delete my steam account

My account is this: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198049840570

Please make it happen as soon as possible.

Thank you for your co-operation!"

I'm fairly sure they had to do this due to EU data protection laws. (possibly other countries)

Unless one is stupid enough to use the exact same credentials for their Steam support account, this should not happen. (And if they are… well, lesson learnt on basic level account security.) Even then, they should ask for some real proof that it is the owner who wants to delete the account.
