I hope there's a huge delay when deleting your account, else this will be easily used for malicious reasons.

Don't really care.
I'm more interested why you felt it should be posted in deals section :)

Before if you get hacked. you only lose items in your inventory. The next worst thing they could do is maybe give you a vac ban after.

Now, if the hacker feels like being even more of a dick, you'll lose your whole account.

Well, what if someone hacks your account and does this? Then what?

I'm always in favour of giving people a choice. I truly can't see the benefits of deleting my Steam acount though. Why would anybody do that?
Plus it opens up doors for all kinds of malintend as pointed out by many in this thread already.
Eh...

Is it me or do I find this a useless and bad option? If someone got his account hacked then the hacker might as well delete his account.

i hope at least a code or somehow a verification is needed in case a request for the account deletion is made

The amount of people in this thread who never used the Steam support page and have the faintest idea on how it works is… staggering.

I've used steam support but I'm still not sure how it works. Or at least I don't know how to provoke a response that isn't an automated reply that isn't even relevant...

They have people there, just… well, my theory is that it is always one intern. For the entire planet. The rest is automated responses that trigger after a ticket gets a few weeks old.
But there are safeguards, because Valve is not completely incompetent, especially when it comes to covering their own asses to cut on legal costs by avoiding any court cases. So a user cannot fuck up their own account, nor they are left with any sort of assurance if they do get hacked. This is why you have a completely separate account to the support page.

Yeah, I do find it annoying that support accounts are separate to steam accounts but it is an extra level of security. Although I do personally suspect that the interns also pretend to be automated responses in order to avoid taking responsibility for anything (if only because I used to work at a place where that did actually happen...)

Which is in a sense a good thing, but still, it is not a bad idea to have a support account with a secure password. For example, your account would be almost ideal to steal for impersonation for trade scams. Good amount of games, but not too many, low but still acceptable Steam level, more than two-year old account, over 100 friends, spotless SteamRep record. Also, you gave a region as a home location where a good many known traders hail from.

I do have a steam support account, just haven't used it (or had the need for). As for a lot of traders hailing from my region, really? from Qatar? I didn't know that ... That is surprising. I do have a strong password for my account and I do have 2-factor authentication setup but I know those aren't infallible. But I usually don't bother with trading etc.

Region, not country. Middle-Eastern people of the countries of high GDP have a recognisable share among Steam traders (well, don't imagine thousands, just… an amount that you kinda take note of ^^). I assume not for profits (those were mostly the Russians, who could earn a decent-ish sum before Steam implemented regional pricing).

Ahh, Got it. Thanks for clearing that up. I'm not too familiar with the whole trading part of Steam economy. All I do is buy games and add to my ever increasing backlog XD

Wait the real question is, does Steam Support even work?

When it comes to account management, it does, because otherwise they could get into trouble. They are responsible for managing the accounts. And they are actually good for only this one thing. Any problem related to a game, community, or anything that is not tied to your licenses, they are utterly incapable of solving and usually disregard those messages entirely.

They are not that stupid, they will probably ask for some sort of ownership confirmation, maybe send an sms to your phone with a code if there is an automated system or maybe your credit/debit card information, pretty much anything that proves you're the owner.

Hmm ... maybe this is the first step to introducing fees to their service?
It would make sense, first give people an easy way to opt out (by giving them a tool
to delete their accounts) then introduce a service fee. It's a subscription model after all.
People don't own their games on Steam, they just own a subscription to use certain
games on a service platform. While the games may be free indefinitely once bought, who
can say for sure that the service will be free as well?

The backlash would be so big that no one sane on valve would do that.
Remember those news about random death treats that people in the gaming industry tend to receive when shit hits the fan, prepare to read about actual murders. Pissing off millions of users is not a great idea when you know that a handful of them are actual psychos.

For those who are worried about hackers deleting their account, I'm sure in order to do so one would have to jump through plenty of security hoops to finally confirm it.

I mean......even changing your own password is not as simple as it sounds. It's unlikely that hackers got into your e-mail address too.

My wife would probably delete my steam account if she knew how. Considering my age 36, it gives here one more reason to make me stop gaming. Despite how little I play anymore since a have a daughter and work 2 jobs. I guess maturity is based on your hobbies.

I'll probably pass my account on to her when she's old enough and place parental settings on most of the games in until I see fit. I remember playing Doom when I was 20 years old on a 386 Windows 3.1 PC with 25 MB ram and a 25 MB hard drive. Things are different now. I won't let her have the gaming habits I did.

What's the background story here? What makes Valve allow this?
Don't you think the cons outweigh the pros?
Do you think it's related to gambling bots? They need to vanish from the system! /crackpot theory

Ok, this just opens the gates wide open to hackers deleting accounts.
So dear valve, why not give me an option to register my account to my name so I need to prove with my ID (the one that legally proves my identity, the one provided by my country's goverment) that I'm the one actually requesting the deletion before I can actually ask for it.
