For older games, go with GOG. They make sure that those games are running on them modern OS. Steam is nice and dandy for new games, but GOG it's the place to grab your oldies/goldies fix. Plus, you can burn your game on a DVD, there is no copy protection and you get a bunch of extras that Steam does not provide for those old games.

In my personal experience, if it's an old game, I'll go with GoG. GoG makes sure they fix the old games to run on modern systems. The same cannot be said of Steam. Check out Desperados, for instance, a great old game. My version from GoG runs great. I purchased it on GoG instead of Steam because if you look at the Steam reviews, you'll see the Steam versions don't run well at all on modern systems. Same for Dungeon Siege and Dungeon Siege II. You have to actually modify the config files and do some other stuff to get them to run properly. (I wish Dungeon Siege was avail on GoG!)

Sorry, but if I buy a game from Steam and my system meets or exceeds the requirements, it should run without issue. So, for the old games, I go to GoG. They have yet to let me down.

For more modern games, six of one, half a dozen of the other. I like the no DRM of GoG, but if there are achievements and such, I may go Steam if the price is the same.

GOG versions are always tested to work. Steam/Valve does not do any testing at all. So if it's not any more costly then you should always go with the GOG version for playability.

It is more costly, though, because it's currently in a Groupees bundle. =X

But The Longest Journey is not notoriously hard to get running.
I would not expect much trouble either way.

Note: You can still set compatibility settings for Steam games, you just need it find their exes in STEAM/steamapps/common

Where abouts do you live? GOG has no regional pricing so it's probably better to buy from there.

Steam ran first try without any problems on my Windows 7 machine. It shouldn't be a problem with this particular game.

Haven't tried the Steam one yet but my old DVD version ran fine on Win 7 with one ini tweak to turn off hardware acceleration (otherwise the cutscenes ran at 1fps).
