It pains my soul to say that I have mixed feelings about the new Deus Ex game. I love the franchise (I even liked Invisible War, though it was markedly inferior) and so I was one of the target audience for the game. And yet, despite all of that, there's a bitter taste in my mouth. Part of it comes from rough spots that QA should have patched out, like glitching through an elevator because I interacted with its control panel while it was moving. However, the bigger concern, and the one that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth that keeps me from enjoying the otherwise superb campaign is the monetization method. Some of the ways that it differs in monetization from Human Revolution are as basic as the pre-order rewards; instead of being automatically granted, they are claimed once, on one save file, ever, and if you claim them from the server then start a new game, rough luck. This makes no economic sense, since no one can just buy the preorder bonuses (yet), but is aggravating to players, at least one of whom has complained that his game crashed after transferring resulting in NO preorder bonus gear. (The cosmetics, missions, and out of game extras don't follow this stupid system, I think.) Breach mode feels like a tacked on F2P game, with it incessant need for the player to buy more boosters, ammo, and modifiers to hit the absurd challenges for score and time (one boss fight has a time of 9 seconds, while with a grenade launcher I managed to not kill him with five rounds in about 20 between getting in position and aiming, and one of my shots detonated on my cover killing me and eating my ammo for the run) while reminding you that you could get "premium" weapons and booster packs with Real Money TM. It doesn't belong as half of a $60 game, much less one that could have used a bit more QA budget.

All that to say, I like the campaign, and I do enjoy it, but the launch makes me think that Square/Eidos thinks its customers are idiots who want to pay to play twice.

Mankind Divided did a bad job at its marketing, since all this wanted me to do was to just finally play the first Deus Ex game :D

To be fair, it bridges the gap between Human Revolution and the original very well. I like the writing and story and stuff, so if you're a fan of the series I'd recommend it as it's basically an improvement over HR, but ignore Breach mode and don't click on the store tab if you want to ignore the salt farm.

My logic for the monetization issue is that you could just ignore it. As far as I can tell, you don't have to pay to beat the game. If the game was designed around the fact that it's far better to pay money because it's almost impossible to progress (aka 95% of mobile games) then I can see why you would be upset.
The only bad thing about monetization is that it could break your immersion in a game. The moment you see some pop-up giving you an option to pay, you are instantly reminded that this is a game, you are not in a fantasy world. Well maybe that's just me.

As far as the bugs and glitches go, yeah you can be mad at those :P

If you want to play Breach mode, unless you get god-tier luck with your boosters, you'll probably have to pay. Or farm a mission 150 times to get a booster pack, since you only get 100 credits for subsequent completions of a mission. Just remember that any ammo you use goes away forever.

Oops.

The monetization in the SP is actually pretty subtle though, so it wouldn't be too bad, it's just leaving a bitter taste I can't shake off.

To be fair, you can get Breach boosters by playing the campaign, just like you can get campaign boosters by playing Breach.

Just the idea that the game may have a very subtle balancing bias (and from what I'm reading, in breach mode it's not subtle at all) to encourage micro-transactions crossing my mind is enough for me to not want to buy the game.

I'll go play the first Deus Ex, never got to play it much (only did the first mission 2-3 years ago).

Well, it's Square Enix. They are really, really trying incredibly hard to be bigger money-grubbing greedy assholes than Capcom. Sure, they have a long way to go to achieve that goal, but boy, they are doing a great job still.

Now I wonder if the Japanese office will have a similarly great idea and introduce SP micro-transactions into FFXV as well. That would unleash an interesting hellstorm…

Well the fans were sending death threats to the journalist who kinda leaked the 2 months delay - the journalist, not SqEnix. At this point I'm actually curious how they would treat if they would crap into the game just like that - flame the news sites for reporting about it, or the people who didn't buy the game because it's OBVIOUS that the devs need the money, and that's why the microtransactions are in the game.
Today's stupidity is a really interesting thing :D

I had a gut feeling beginning at the start of this year that the series will self-repeat and after the nice game they shoot themselves in the foot with some idiotic design decision or two.
Since both Steam and Metacritic scores are in the mid-60s, looks like my hunch was correct.

are you implying the steam and metacritic user scores mean the game itself is not that good? because it absolutely is. user scores reflect technical problems and rage about microtransactions, as they always do. they are not representitive of the actual quality of the game (which is fucking amazing, btw).

I usually trust the aggregated score of hundreds or thousands of people who played the game, than of some journalists.
I have watched some let's plays since then. Game looks good, even if feels more like some expansion to DX3 with a new graphical engine, than a completely new entry in a series.
I'll still buy it for sure, once it is released.

i don't. i trust a user review, if i read it and it tells me something about the game. but combined user scores on steam? or even on metacritic? not trustworthy. people give negative reviews, if they have any problems. if they don't like the financial model. if they think the predecessor was better. and of course if the game is published by ubisoft. ^^ i like that we have the chance to upload reviews on steam. and reading a few "helpful" reviews and interpreting the text is a great help indeed. but the overall score is often misleading.

even if feels more like some expansion to DX3 with a new graphical engine, than a completely new entry in a series.

why so negative? yes, it's similar to HR. but isn't that what sequels usually do? more of the same, with some improvements? in fact sequels usually get some problems if they change too much, because the hardcore fans don't agree with it (for instance a low steam user score xD ). it's a 20-30 hour game with gameplay improvements and a new engine. certainly doesn't feel like an expansion to me. :)

I'll still buy it for sure, once it is released.

it is released. i am guessing that's a joke i don't get? ^^

Several SP missions are still unreleased and will be available in the form of DLC. I consider a game released when all intended content is available and playable, which usually takes anywhere up to 18 months from the day the first and largest (or, in the case of Battlefront, a somewhat larger than most) segment is available to the public. In case of SP DLC, we have seen in the past that it can change the narrative of the entire game (like in Fallout 3, where most of the third act was thrown out or reinterpreted with the 4th DLC, or how a large chunk of the narrative in Mass Effect 3—including the whole reason it started as it did—relied on events that happened in ME2 DLCs).

yes, it's similar to HR. but isn't that what sequels usually do?

If you look at the first three games, then not exactly. DX4 is the first main entry in the series that does very little to try to change mechanics and design elements from the previous entry. Both DX2 and DX3 were radically different than the game before them.

In all honesty, YES they feel a bit like a sham, i mean not only that u use money in a single player game of this magnitude but also true...u can just ignore it. It does deliver quite enough for the 50 E worth, personally if they kept the mechanics and graphics unchanged from Human Rev. and just put this new story in i think it would have been great but 2016 yadayda blabla course u put new graphics and mechanics and balba which is cool...it just takes a while to adjust to them but i remember Human Rev. being hated by many of my friends for that exact reason (console mechanics, targeting etc.). This franchise, even if this Mankind part would have totally sucked which by far is not doing that...sucking i mean, will survive and thrive for the FEELZ of it, the whole story, Illuminati, Jensen, Prichard, Michael McCann, cutscenes makes this a gold franchise.
People don't go crazy on zuma or stupid one button games when they have microtransactions but if one AAA game dares to put that everyone looses their mind. Just ignore that and ALL will be fine.
And i'm hoping and thinking a patch would come very soon and not just for the technical issues.

The microtransactions are a dangerous slope. First they are there to get faster progress, then to get more bonus, then they actually halt the gameplay if you don't buy more stuff. Dead Space 3 did the same as well. And to be honest the simple fact that you buy the game, and they still want to squeeze more money out of you is just disgusting. Whether you plan to buy them or not, there is no place for microtransactions in a 60$ game. Period. We've seen enough times already that if noone points out the bullshit of the AAA industry, they'll push it a little further, and act like that is a new standard.

The people who play mobile games (and, for some unknown reason, put up with their business models) are usually not the same people who buy AAA games.
Furthermore, AAA customers have a right to expect a rounded and complete game experience from their 60 dollar purchase. In my view, all microtransactions are completely unacceptable, but they are sort of understandable when the base game is freemium or very, very cheap.

Didn't have the opportunity to play enough to judge whether I am disappointed or not, could barely squeeze in an hour up to now. Haven't even tried the Breach mode yet. The pre-oder bonuses not applying to more than one save is indeed incomprehensible. At least the game runs well for me and generally looks great. Not to wave away any problems with the PC port, but I'm guessing a fair portion of those reports of bad performance stem from users with overambitious settings (MSAA x8, HC Shadows, Ultra volumetric lighting, etc.), although the developers explicitly warned against applying these if your hardware isn't up to snuff.

As for F2P-like microtransactions and in-game real money stores in a single player focused AAA title and all that, Ubisoft were pioneers with AssCreed Unity 2 years ago, if I remember correctly. The community wasn't exactly enthralled, to put it mildly. I'm not sure what the fallout from that was, or if Ubi changed things at all afterwards. Seeing these kinds of things implemented here though, I fear this practice won't be put to rest so easily.

From the few hours I've played, it's pretty much more of what I loved about Human Revolution. So no complaints regarding the game part for now. The aim acceleration and framerate sucks, but they're looking into it. There are reports of an awkward/spliced ending, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

I have no problems with the microtransactions for now since it's a single player game anyway and people can do what they want with their game. They can ignore the micro transactions or make their life easier, whatever they want. It's similar to cheat DLCs only this time they're microtransactions and will hopefully dissuade people more from buying them anyway.

It makes sense that the pre-order and microtransaction stuff could only be used once because they're basically overpowering your playthrough. The game makes it crystal clear that the bonus items are for one saves only, so it's kind of the player's fault that he claimed all of them on one file. I wish they stated that long ago, though. The game supports multiple saves anyway, so you can claim all the stuff you want on Save 1 then continue playing on Save 2.

I haven't played Breach yet. But honestly, who paid for Breach? It's pretty much an extra.

Really sorry to say this, but what is about to come going to be harsh (And long, so if you can't be arsed... Skip to the next comment)

We all know by now that this game should have had only campaign mode. The rest is for grinding only, and it was obvious that they will try and make a profit out of it. As long as the campaign is clean of micro-transactions, the game is perfectly fine. It is your choice to participate with the added content and you know exactly how it works and it's your choice to spend the time or money on it.

As for the pre-order bonuses and the way they are being claimed. Again i am really sorry to say that, but you would be considered stupid to get it unless you are really into the cosmetic shit they offer. We are no longer living in a day where pre-orders make sense. It is not the 80's or 90's anymore where if a store is out of physical copies of the game, you have to wait for weeks before they can re-stock again. You can download and install the game on day 1. There is literally no excuse to buy into the game before its release.
The method of redeeming the digital goods (Which was the only thing they have offered) has been out there before you've made the purchase and it was your own responsibility to read it. So you pretty much knew exactly how it is going to work and decided to pre-order any ways.

It is not the case of a collector's edition where you get actually physical goods which would stay there as long as you take care of them and not attached to any online service or any external hardware to make them available. I believe that physical things you get as a bonus with a game are the only reason to ever pay more/in advance for anything. As these come unconditioned to you (Unlike much of the digital stuff added to pre-orders). So to be fair - You are the only one to blame about your bitter taste for the game. It was your choice to both participate in the 2 practices that don't sit well with you, so there is no one else to blame but yourself.

This trend of buying games before they are released and people have a good look at them and how they actually run and play is the exact reason why we've got games like "No Man's Sky" and all the fiasco that surrounds it. Because when you pay for a game in advance these bugs you mentioned that slipped through QA are not incentivised to be fixed (More about this later). The developer would most likely be in the mind set of "Yeah it's done to a working order... So screw this". I know that not all devs are the same, but we see this time and time again. It was not that big of an issue in the past.

In general the game looks really good. It is one of the best PC ports in years that i've seen with the amount of things you can costumise to make it run as perfect as possible on your own machine. It runs good and it looks good and that's what is really important (Well and hopefully the story is good too). As for the glitches here and there - You always have the save feature. I am not saying that you should turn a blind eye on such, but sometimes games are just too good to judge them for a bug or two that are minor nuicenses (And that's exactly the sort of bug you've described). It's not that it breaks the game and stops you from progressing... Other titles like the recent batman game where it was literally unplayable are a bigger offender in such terms.

So all in all and conclusion - You are literally whinning... I am yet to buy the game and play it in full, but so far it looks very impressive and by far much better than most titles released in recent month (If not years). And if you want to avoid the bitter taste in your mouth - Stop pre-ordering when it'se senseless, and don't participate in micro-transaction filled minigames (There is the mobile market for it, just like one of the users already have pointed it out)

</end of rant>

You didn't read my whole post. I do like the game. I'd give the campaign a solid 8/10. It's a fun game. It's just obnoxious to be confronted with "Hey, there's all this stuff you could pay for if you're stupid" which is annoying as a gamer. Quite frankly, though, I couldn't comment on how good the game looks, because it doesn't run super well. There are tons of options, but essentially on my toaster it looks like sludge. Part of that is my rig, and I get that. Having an older system means you can't crank things up. But it's not a consolation when I have infinite load to black screens and bugs. I have had to reload because of glitches half a dozen times and had to force kill the game a good number in addition. It, quite frankly, is not "one of the best PC ports in years" since other games like MGSV or even the flawed but functional Dark Souls III all seem to run better and look prettier on my rig. If you haven't played it yourself, I would butt out on the port quality debate, because people are having issues with high end rigs too; it seems to be very hit or miss (though hopefully patches will improve performance). Quite frankly, I'm not just "whining" (fixed it for you) and quite frankly if I hadn't preordered I'd be even more upset because I would have spent $60 (or closer to it) instead of the $36 I snagged it for on sale at GMG. It's legitimate to be upset by sketchy practices, because in basically none of the hype for breach mode did they mention "Oh, the best stuff will be behind pay walls or hours of grind" and the mode's economy seems sloppy and unpolished, and I suspect that part of the reason there are issues with the campaign is that resources were diverted from QA (not that Breach is flawless either; I've had a couple crashes there too) to create a monetization scheme. I'm not whining about I preordered and my money is gone. I'm upset that a publisher and developer released a $60 product that asks for lots more money. If Breach mode had been a stand-alone game, I would have had no complaints about it, but as is it's an insult to implement a microtransaction-laden freemium game along with what customers wanted, presenting it as additional content that turns out to be a money pit.

TL:DR I'm not salty about the preorder, like you think I am. Even if the game had entirely negative reviews I'd still have bought it, because it's Deus Ex and even a bad Deus Ex game is something I'd love to play (heck, I even liked The Fall, crappy as it was). In fact, I don't even think the game was bad; I love the campaign so far. I'm upset because SqEdios thought it was fine to shoehorn in microtransactions and a freemium game into a $60 game like they had good sense, and their implementation casts a negative light on the rest of the game too because its patronizing and insulting.

PS: I preordered for the non-game bonuses (Soundtrack (basically just the trailer music and three other tracks from the early game, lame, makes HR's sampler look awesome), comic (okay, but incredibly short and basically tells something you find on a personal secretary three minutes into the game anyway), novella, and artbook, the last three of which are plugs for the longer versions of each offered on the store), which were lackluster compared to HR's but nothing to really phone home about in terms of negativity.

Fair enough, I guess i missed your core point in the middle there about the paying of things. I don't like the carrot dingling myself and agree that in a 60$ title there should be more resources put into the actual game rather than the marketing BS and the ingame transaction BS. True.....

As for the port - I simply said i did not buy it yet (Pay day tomorrow...) But i did download it and did test it on my rig. Really sorry to say but if you run it on a toaster - It is not the devs problem really. Unreal Engine 4 is very taxing, and despite all they have managed to pull it off at really good frame rates.
As someone that doesn't give 2 rats asses about graphics and such, what i really care about is how it actually runs. And yes - Now days it seems like a plague that games would not run evenly on all PC's... That's the reality of it. By no means i've said "It runs good for me, so it must be good for all". That's the curse of PC's, that because of too many factors in play even 2 rigs with the same hardware might run differently due to software installed on them (Or not removed from them properly).

As for breach mode - I still think that the fact that they have mentioned in game transactions should've already alerted you that it will never be fair and that their sole intention with it would be to milk out for money. Just like in your highly praised MGSV's multiplayer BS.... So it's not only Eidos and Squenix that do that... All the AAA scene is filled with this BS, and the less we buy into it and the less money they get from this source - The more likely they would be to stop doing it.... Unfortunately too many unwilling and uninformed consumers still exist =/ (Not saying you are one).

You have all the rights and personal reasons to do whatever you want - I am just saying that applying common sense to things and being more informed is your own responsibility to not raise your expectations too high of things. That way you will be disappointed less

As for the port, just a couple of details; Mankind Divided uses the Dawn Engine, which is not as well optimized as UE4 in my experience (which is very limited) and I technically hit minimum specs (barely) so while I expect the game to look sub-optimal I also expect it to not have technical issues like clipping through elevators and physics glitches. That said, it doesn't seem to be that great compared to many other ports, which is contrary to your point.

Also, I'm not disappointed in the game, I'm playing the campaign now and loving it, but I'm a little bitter that SqEdios would weaken it by taking budget away to make a parallel freemium game tack-on while there are still issues with the campaign.

Well I dunno which ports you're talking about then =)

I am talking about the big games that went out that were cross-platform. And again, i do agree with you and I am not defending them for anything. I do agree that if you run into problems then it's shitty. Yet I also think that you should not try to run games on something that barely manages to run it where the hardware will constantly be chocking (Just like you won't put 18 tons on a crane that can carry only 18.02 tons) so your sub par experience might stem from that.

I would suggest looking into your own rig and perhaps see if there are solutions that can be taken to make the game run better (Drivers and the likes). I haven't seen clipping issues as of yet (Not on my rig, nor on people who stream/record the game)

All in all, it's a real shame it doesn't work too good for you and hope you can solve it soon. (Maybe save up for some hardware ;) )

Unfortunately, I have this thing called a "Tuition Payment" coming up soon, so new hardware will take a while. The game is playable though, so I think it should be fine. I wish everything were on the FOX Engine, but that's a pipe dream, so for now I'll just compromise settings where I have to. I get stable performance (admittedly at the cost of appearance) on low settings at 720p, and since I'm mostly playing for the story/aesthetic and not for jaw-dropping graphics, I'll live.

Well really sorry to tell, but barely passing minimum requirements means that you can run the game - Not enjoy it at it's fullest. It's for the stubborn people who still want to experience the story and game despite subpar experience (Have been there myself before i started earning my own money). If you want smooth game and at least the way it's intended to run and look at it's least and minimum (The vision) there are the recommended HW requirements - And that's not putting the game at it's best... It's at least making it run and look as intended

Hope you can upgrade soon and possibly enjoy the game more though

Sorry for talking out of my ass earlier, i simply have a very strong opinion against pre-ordering. Yet you are completely right. Square and Eidos have become really greedy on this one and have done everything they can to leave you disappointed on way or another. There indeed was no mention of the fact that the pre-order stuff would be 1 time use per lifetime....

The game is amazing though, and it runs smooth as butter. Looks amazing too

No, your opinion is fine. Pre-orders have become quite an issue, and it's fine to question the pre-order fad because it does entrench bad games as top sellers before people know about the issues that a game might have.

Unfortunately, even with patches, it still runs terribly on my rig, but that's the dangers of buying a game when you only barely pass the minimum specs; sometimes, minimum specs just means "It sorta runs okay", and in this case that's still true. When they do the DX12 patch, hopefully they'll integrate some performance improvements too.

I am pretty sure they will change the "preorder bonus only works in one save". Me... I rarely preorder games but when i do I (or more likely, i get a INCLUDE EVERYTHING edition 3 years later) actually try to disable those bonuses because I feel they are paid cheats.

EDIT: About microtransactions. I think they are a blight on gaming. But I rather see them on SP games than MP, for the exact reason i think its cheating.

So it sounds like this now; there are "durables" (weapons, cosmetics and missions) and "consumables" (ammo, praxis kits, credits), and consumables go away forever but durables can be reclaimed. Still sounds stupid, and I haven't used any, but it's just rude to offer them for money and be like "Oh, you used it once, GONE FOREVER" if you restart from scratch.

Well to me it sounds more of a bug than an design choice. But I could be wrong. I would wait a few days to see.

I find it silly to refund the game because of that, like some people did. I do think people should complain about it. It worked on knights of pen and paper (they removed the microtransactions) although they are a indie game so they kinda need all purchases they can get.

And nothing against cheating in SP games, I cheat sometimes. But usually I try to play legit, and I dislike preorder bonuses. An example from the top of my head is shadow of mordor. I played on family share on release day, bought a special pack some years later and I got a flaming sword and an extra revive. How unfair is that? I disabled them.

Agreed, I think the people who are like "I can only use these once, refund time" are being petty, but it does make it feel like the milking for cash is in full swing.

That said, I just grabbed the preorder bonus weapons, and they're not, strictly speaking, better than the in game weapons. The pistol does a hint more damage when fully upgraded, but sacrifices huge amounts of ammo capacity and fire rate, so I'm not sure I'd say they're cheats as much as alternate weapons with (cool) cosmetic changes. It might be game breaking to have all of it at the start, since it took me ten hours to find a revolver (free, though, I could have bought one earlier) and it offers a revolver, pistol, and combat rifle, but without ammo, you're still in bad shape and there's not a lot of revolver ammo I've seen... though pistol and rifle ammo is superfluous.

Well I dont have the game yet so I cant really comment on balance. If you do feel its okay, thats great, more power to you. But I had bad experience with preorder items, so I rather just not use them.

Another example of bad balanced stuff: Dragon Age 1. Its been a long time so I cant remember EXACTLY the numbers, but a story gift (that you had to venture through some battles and look for it) gave an x amount of appreciation (lets say 15) while the store bought item that was a DLC gave a much bigger amount (40). And some armor I got at the start of the game I didnt find an better one until a long time.

In Dragon Age 2 and 3 there was a quest marker for preorder items that i ignored. And it was hard to do because I just love to go to quest markers.

I haven't used them; I don't have inventory space or upgrade parts to finish upgrading them and I have silencers/sights/lasers on my "normal" guns, so they're probably not worth it. But that said, even if I had upgraded them, they probably would be about par for the course. Perhaps they have better ammo consumption rates because of slightly higher damage (I only checked the pistol) but it's still nothing that would change the way the game plays, since a silenced pistol headshot is still an instant kill and I mostly go for stun/non-lethal anyway (unless the baddies are, like, super evil) so nothing there for me anyway. Super evil = ok to kill. Just evil = stun. Got it!

Yeah I will also do a non-lethal playthrough the first time. And if i have the willpower a lethal on a second one. Microtransactions shenanigans aside, what you think of the game?

I actually really like the game. I'm fairly easy to impress (I like most things, even if they're only sufficient or above average) and it hits all the right buttons for me (cyberpunk, stealth/action, etc.) so I'm loving it so far. The campaign is good and ties together Human Revolution and the original Deus Ex, with tons of fun stuff to do. Exploring the Prague hub is fun and there's plenty of depth in the world; emails to read, sidequests, etc. While there are some things I'm not a huge fan of, and I have some technical issues on my rig, the campaign is quite good and other than some points of preference, I do approve of most of the changes from HR (other than the microtransactions, obviously); the game isn't just all gold colored, the UI is crisper in my opinion, and overall I'd say is basically HR with a fresh coat of paint and a better story. I really like the way anti-Aug sentiment is shown through dialogue and police checkpoints, which makes the consequences of recent events seem more real than in many other games where you read in the newspaper that x or y happened but the protagonist isn't affected in any way. I have 20 hours in the game; a good part of that (maybe as much as a quarter?) is in Breach mode, which is fun but laden with microtransactions (which are much more intrusive than the campaign microtransactions) and I'd say that unless things end abruptly there could be another 10-15 hours of campaign play given my methodical play style.

I see, thats great. I look forward to playing it, although I dont know if my pc can handle it unfortunately.

When breach mode was announced I didnt like it. Maybe I will change my mind.

This reminds me of the shit Ubisoft pulled with Assassin's Creed Unity. Buying Boosts for coop, special points that allow you to gain an advantage as long as you pay for it, and more stupid stuff like forcing the use of a companion app. It's pretty much a single player game so making you pay for stuff was unnacceptable. They faced so much backlash that some things were actually removed. I'm surprised devs don't learn from the mistakes of other devs.

Microtransactions will never be okay. They give people that are willing to pay a huge, unfair advantage and will always piss off the majority of fans. They're more acceptable in multiplayer but I still think they're all around crap. Sure, your company may get some money out of microtransactions but is it really worth losing a portion of your fanbase?

If it were a free game, I could see it. I pay for things in F2P games, not frequently, but once I dedicate enough time that I feel I should compensate the devs. This is insulting though because I already paid for the game (now, I got it on sale, but the sticker price is $60 and tons of people paid that for it) and now I'm expected to pay again to enjoy part of the content.

I don't mind if there are available microtransactions in the SP game as long as the game isn't balanced to make you need them (unless you're a God).
I also don't mind too much if there's some other cashgrab mode that I'll just simply not play.
I do mind when there are achievements for cashgrab mode that I'll never get. ;-)
As for the pre-order rewards being a one-use thing. I agree that would suck if I'd pre-ordered. But that wasn't going to happen so I'm not too worried about it. I honestly don't know why folks pre-order (though for 40% off I can't blame you. I tried myself, though I probably would've created a GA for it).

Agreed; the campaign microtransactions aren't intrusive or even necessary; I forgot whether I went for medium or hard difficulty but it's basically a cakewalk if you're smart and if you die you can just load an autosave and try one more time. Breach mode, however, should have been either revamped entirely or just had the economy removed (do missions with preset gear/augs for the challenge, no microtransaction BS).

I like how this reviewer gets a bit militant in their stance, saying it isn't just wrong to do, but we as a gaming community can't LET them get away with these microtransaction practices.

After a decade of gaming, this is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review.

The gameplay is nice, graphics are pretty, story is... enough, I guess.

I'm refunding this game because of the microtransactions in singleplayer mode.

This is a business practice that is an absolute insult to anyone who buys this game at full price. This reminds me of an app game where they make you run out of resources and offer you a $5 bundle to solve all of your problems instead of.... you know, playing the game and managing your resources?

The severety of this issue may not be absolutely game-breaking in this title, but if we let a AAA release get away with these types of practices, it sets the bar so low and opens up this sort of slimy sales tactic to permeate otherwise great titles.

TL;DR - If I'm spending $60, I better be getting a complete title. Stop trying to squeeze 5 bucks out of me in a singleplayer environment. I enjoyed the first level of the game but I can't support this practice.

That might be a bit too aggressive for my tastes because I don't feel like it responds to the problem. The campaign microtransactions aren't actually my problem here; I'm all for idiot taxes if it means more good games. It's Breach mode that makes me salty, because it's pay to play basically past the first few areas. To be anywhere near competitive (read, to access all the content) you need either god-tier luck with your random drops, days to grind (because unless you're getting the first time or daily bonuses for completion, you're earning 100 credits to amp up the difficulty and waste your limited resources, which barely recoups your losses and takes 500 completes to earn a good booster pack, and 2000 for the best non-paid pack), or pay for bonus chances to get good stuff.

Oh I was really surprised when I saw that DX: Mankind Divided had mixed reviews, hearing as it's supposed to be sort of an "augmented" (heh heh) Human Revolution O.o

But as some others pointed out, there were mixed opinions on Mankind Divided ever since its horrible preorder campaign. I do wonder how are things going to end up :)

Pretty much every AAA game has been getting Mixed reviews recently. That's partly the publisher's/developer's responsibility, and the other part is on Steam users being extremely salty over anything
