I suspect they will try to charge us anyway

If they charge anything other than what was listed, it'd be illegal. So it's down to (did it charge incorrectly while being listed correctly) or (was it incorrect from the very start). Revoking'd be a safer option for them, as in the EU you can revoke any time there's "an obvious price glitch the consumer should have suspected was in error", while in the US it's even more lenient- they can just say it was a price glitch, and that's that. Obviously, if it was listed correctly, charging after the fact is fine, since they're still just charging what they promised to charge in the first place.

IMO:
The main issue with the situation that they very likely will revoke keys, and with their history of being behind with the restocking of keys, they'll ran out of them extremely fast, likely from all, if people start to "buy" this en masse.

They won't ban your account as you mentioned in another comment of yours, but they'll 100% revoke keys

They can't. It very clearly states you'll pay $0. They'd get into legal issues if they started charging people. They'll most likely just revoke the keys. Unless this whole thing was intentional, which would be weird.. then they'll do nothing.

Heh don't want to burst your bubble but IGN has been trampling over customer protection laws for years and even more recently so I wouldn't expect them to care now.

But regardless, they'll probably revoke the keys, yes

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There is no customer protection in play here, unless I'm seriously mistaken even the EU has laws that if it's clearly too good to be true, the purchaser should expect it to be so. This isn't when a new-ish game gets an 80% discount that can be a weird choice from the store, this is clearly a mistake. Though the IGN hate is not incorrect, just a lil misplaced here :P

And yeah, they'll revoke the hell out of it. I'm happy personally that I already claimed my keys on release day, I expect them to run low on multiple, if not all games after people draining the key stock with these "free" bundles.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

EnochIsHere was saying they hope they get charged for the keys instead of losing them and spodamayn was saying that'd be violating customer protection laws. It would. You can't announce something is free, even by accident and then charge people later because you happen to have their credit card on file.
However they can revoke the keys, of course, even if it was their mistake. That's not covered by any protection regarding digital services.

I was just saying I'm pretty sure they wouldn't care about protection laws because they have not in the past.

I'm happy personally that I already claimed my keys on release day

The safest choice these days with the out of stock madness... and now this. People who were on the fence though... and who didn't get it for free, not sure what's going to happen now but I'd bet those keys are going to be out of stock for a while.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They will get in trouble with the CC companies. I'd expect a lot of chargebacks. Remember, chargebacks hit the merchant with a fee for allowing the transaction on top of taking back the payment.

Revoking the keys is the most likely option. Unless this free month is an intentional promotion, but even there revoking the keys is a possibility if they regret it.

Permalink

It's a bundle so that's the very least it should be, don't you think?
And still it's 13 euros for us now so I wouldn't call cutting more than a third of the retail value of a bundle while increasing the price by a third a great value.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Of course, and the retail is almost $200. It's not "low value" if it's 10% of the original price.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You could say compared to the other bundles they did it's an unusually lower value. Still not all months will be the best, it happens.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's lower, but not "low". Indeed, bundles aren't going to be to everyone's tastes, but hey, they're cheap as, and in this case, free (yet people still have a reason to complain, bizarrely).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know if I get what you're trying to say in this context as lower and low will mean the same thing I'd say. As you say bundles in general are pretty cheap, so when they're losing 30%+ of the value of the bundle when it was already on the cheap side, it's not unfair to say it's lower or low compared to the others that averaged much closer. This happened before a few times, as humble has made lower value bundles I think.

As for complains, yes they'll always happen about anything. For it being free, I also find it a bit strange people will complain about the quality of the games when they're being given for free. I've started playing Nobody Wants to Die and I gotta say I'm disappointed and wasn't even expecting much, I mean it's only a 30gb game, but it uses mandatory AI Upscaling and it just crashed despite me lowering the settings and disabling motion blur. Pretty game though, but not a very interesting/coherent story so far, and doesn't help when it doesn't even run.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I mean I agree with you the quality of the bundle is lower, I've even said so a few days ago on the main bundle thread and discussed it there. However, for free? Like sure I can't see what the headliner of the bundle is, and sure I don't value this like other $12 bundles, but for $0 it's nice of IGN to do this.

Now if they revoke it and it was all a mistake, yeah the bundle is mid tier at best and I'll likely skip it. It's the first one I was canceled on in like 2 years. So I was waiting on a coupon and they gave it to me. I can't exactly complain you know.

Also, if next months bundle is good and I don't have a coupon there and I buy that one for $13, then it would make these two bundles be $6.50 each, so I wouldn't see that as too bad. I would've gotten this months bundle for $6.50 for Legacy of Kain, Nobody wants to die, and Boltgun and maybe to try the others. I wouldn't have gotten it for $13 and likely would've bought the games later from another retailer or during the summer sale or never at all like I've done with thousands of games on my wishlist.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't think it was meant to be free on a massive scale... or free at all. Maybe they meant for it to have a discount for newbies if they subbed for several months, I don't know. There definitely was a mistake or several mistakes made.
I'm not spitting on the bundle, btw. I paused even though I had two wishlisted games in it. I would have grabbed it at the previous price but I just don't want to reward them for screwing me. The rest of the bundle is just too average, and the value is just too low for me at 13 euros.

They made it a numbers game when they increased the price that much.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It was probably the free promo for new accounts. Maybe they wanted to include people who were canceled, not sure. The gifting link even I agree shouldn't have worked because people gifted themselves 24 free monthlies and redeemed them for 2 free years. That will likely lead to an account ban.

Also, I get you, I canceled on the 2nd for the first time in 2 years and was going to skip and trade for a few I wanted unless they gave me a coupon, but I was interested in boltgun, nobody wants to die and legacy of kain. The rest were extras to try. But I would've bought it for $6.50, and for free I had to jump in. If they revoke it I understand and I'm not that mad about it, but I'll cancel again. If they let it as it is, I'll more than likely buy next months whatever it is, and that balances out to $6.50 per bundle, so in a sense I feel like I'm giving some of it back while supporting them and I got a nice deal as well.

That's a good question. Once the key for a game is revoked, SG doesn't see it in your account anymore so that shouldn't prevent you from entering... after the key is revoked though.
There has been issues with some of my wins in the past because keys were revoked and I was told by the gifter he'd send me another key but in the meantime my SG check said one of my wins was missing and I had to regulate my situation asap.

It's very different having to revoke one game's keys though, compared to an entire bundle's worth for every purchase. Lots of different publishers, and Steam would probably be pretty annoyed about it too.

Then there's the issue of legitimate purchases. This was 100% something you could buy accidentally, not knowing there was an issue. So revoking it from such customers isn't exactly great for their reputation.

Not saying they won't do it, but this sure is a cluster puck of some magnitude.

Yeah absolutely. On top of the fact that you're not just paying for 8 games but humble monthly has all sorts of additional features, you're paying for a subscription which comes with the game. So we're talking mass cancellations across the board.

They're gonna have to offer a substantial coupon after the key revokes to get everyone back on board. Their trust is so screwed now. Worse than its ever been.
