invites are freakin redundant anyway. any random gaming forum these days, constantly has invites popping up that anyone can use to sign up... there really is no challenge or difficulty in it. you dont need to know anyone here, you just have to want to sign up and you can... nothing will change when it moves away from invites.

True. I didn't even know WHAT steamgifts was until I stumbled across an invite code in a random forum.

Invites were useful when there weren't a lot of members yet. At first they were pretty rare, and people were even selling them or trading them for games (which is of course illegal but it still happened. It slowed the growth of the site down to managable levels. However as more people entered, more invites were being generated (and I'm also reasonably sure that some people made accounts just to generate more invites), so at this point there isn't any real use for invites anymore since there are so many anyway.
Still, I agree that the entry price should probably be raised. It's really easy to get to $50 account value by spending almost nothing (through $0.01 Indie Bundles, promotion keys, and other such 'exploitable' sources), so while the entry price is meant to stop people from making multiple accounts it's not that hard to get around it.
Then again, with the 1000+ entries per giveaway we have these days, one extra acount won't give you that much of an advantage I guess.

It sounds like a plan. Really. If one's account is worth a decent amount of money, then such a person is more likely to share some giveaways (because she has more do$h, is more addicted to games and Steam and so on and so forth).
I would even suggest increasing the down-limit to 400$.

Yhm. They can also want only take to make their accounts even bigger. Everything's possible.
On the other hand you have people who have cheap accounts, who'd like to have at least a chance to win something. For example my friend, who doesn't have much money therefore games on steam. He has problems even with reaching 50$ requirement.
Though he got Voxatron bundle yesterday (below average - 'cause he doesn't have much money) and I didn't asked him if something changed after Gish activation. Need to ask him.

This. I am a kid without bank account or credit card. I'd like to give something away some day, but now I won't tell my dad: "Dad, please, buy me a game, because I want to give it away". I'd rather want to not ask dad for everything and have a chance to win a game. I registered hoping to win Portal, which I didn't have at the time, and I appeared to be lucky enough.

I did't say I'm poor. I just don't like going with every need or want to my dad who holds the money.
And yes, I'm 18. I became a legal adult month ago, but I'm still a kid. I think like a kid. I live with my parents, they give me love, food, also money. I am also very childlike and not self-relient. I know nothing about law and finances. I don't need to create a bank account in hurry, so I don't do it. So please, don't judge me by some raw data and numbers found on my account, if you don't know me as a person.
But it's okay. That's not the point. The point is even if I wasn't a kid by your book, there are plenty of others, so why would you need to prove me I am not the one?

You are really funny, sir. First you tell me I am not a kid, than you're being very creative implying that I need to grow up. Of course I need to grow up! I even said that. I'm emotionally immature. That also automatically makes my every point invalid. Because being immature I am stupid person.
Or maybe you assume that if I grew up everybody's problems would be solved? If that's true, I have great power. It's awesome! :)

Okey, one more time: It's not that I as in I really have any problem. I just gave an example (of me, because I know my situation the best), to say that there are plenty of people that can have one. See my friend, I described one conversation above.
Is an idea of the person who might not have much money (I've never said it's me), or credit card, or any other simple reason, that hard to understand. Do you really all have to proof me that I have no problem like if I was only user on this site? It is really pointless.

You do realize, that with a $400 limit you wouldn't be allowed to join this site, right?
All the Humble Indie Bundle and Indie Royale Bundle games are only valued at the average buying price of the bundles and all exploitable games aren't counted toward the limit at all.

you do know that the exploited Dirt 3's were removed from accounts, right? Also, by doing that, you would be unfair towards people that bought Dirt 3 in the current weekend sale... The suggestion you made was valid a couple months back when the leak first took place. AFAIK most (if not all) of the leaked dirt 3 copies were removed from accounts that registered them and only the legitimate ones remain now...

keep the cap at 50$ but make the invites more expensive, like 100-200 points?

Honestly since it went open registration I've noticed more games and I've gotten more points. So win/win?

Invites don't matter much. I would support raising the account value requirement though. It's way too easy to make like 5 dummy accounts and get Dirt 3 or Humble Indie Bundles on them for 1 cent each and then proceed to leech on the raffles with 5 times the chance a normal user has.

Dirt 3 doesn't count in the acount's value and Humble Bundles are priced at $5 or so.

Why, because the other person has only 10 games or so on their account? I think that that would be even more reason for them to be allowed to join the site (if it is not a farming account, and being a strong believer in innocent until proven guilty, I assume it is not so). Furthermore, that person with only 10 games has already made 2 giveaways (albeit humble bundles) and so is also contributing in whatever way they can. :)

I think we should make giveaways open to only the wealthiest 1% of Steam account holders. Clearly they are the ones who need free games the most.

Lo, so did the voice of God come down from heaven, and verily He said unto them: "Fuck that noise."

+1 without the invite system we still have something that everyone is gonna be annoyed by. Beggars asking contributors and non-contributors for dota 2 keys though. I still have yet to see how they went from begging for invites to begging for dota 2 keys.
