Do you guys blacklist people if you see their profiles too often commenting "thanks" in giveaways?
I've been leaving a "thanks" because I think that's the least I can do, but I'm getting the feeling I wouldn't have gotten my blacklists if it wasn't for leaving those comments.

What's up with that, is it viewed in a negative manner to say thanks in the comments section of a giveaway?

Some people can think that you are a bot, and those are automated, it's better to say thanks only if you win a giveaway.

there are a lot of autojoiners on the site and some use the thank you script, if you closely watch the comments, you see the same guys over and over again, then check their profile and you will see a very high number of comments, e voila

they probably think it will earn them some whitelists for being nice from people who are unaware

I posted "Thanks" in every giveaway I entered...

Don't. People will think you're a bot or hate you for clogging up their Inbox. It's a sure way to gain blacklists fast.
But always thank the giveaway creator after you have won a giveaway from him. That's common courtesy and if you don't say "Thank you", you might get blacklisted.

Oh, interesting. I wasn't aware of the botting thing, as Jaxben also brought up, but you're right, getting hundreds of notifications may also be annoying. I will start to only expressing it if I win the giveaway.
Thanks!

Long-long time ago, when SG had old design, it was considered polite to say thanks upon entering. There were no blacklist system as is, but there was allowed to make custom giveaway rules, one just needed to get them approved by moderators, and some people made a blacklists themselves and enforce them as custom rule, and they blacklisted people who DIDN'T say thanks upon entering. Things have changed since then - now we have blacklists, and whitelists, and we also have notifications about comments in our giveaways. And now it become obvious, that if you make 20 giveaways, and everyone who enters them all post "Thanks" in every of 20... you got 20*entries unread comments. So, if it's 20 giveaways with 1000 entries each... and, let's say, every other user want to thank you... you end up with whooping 10000 notifications. You open new messages, and read:

siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks
siqueira94: thanks

And same for every entry... And if somebody at that time answered to you in discussion section, this one message is totally lost in 10000 meaningless "thank you" messages. And some bot makers decided that bot that say thanks looks more legit, so it also became associated with bots... No wonder people don't like this kind of messages nowadays! Some got annoyed to the level of just outright blacklisting everyone who say thanks prior to winning. Can't blame them much, it's their giveaways and their rules.

Reading AmanoTC comment I realized the possible spam effect, but I didn't thought about how much more annoying it could be to have my notification showing up multiple times in the inbox of people who run multiple giveaways at the same time.
I guess I've lost "big donors", but well, at least I won't be doing that from now on. Thanks for the heads up and for explaining the lore behind!

Yeah, I think it's appropriate and generally appreciated if you thank people when you win, but there's no need to do so just for the entry (unless it's something particularly special, and in that case, you'll probably say a lot more than just "thanks" ;) ). I've never blacklisted anyone for it, but I don't like wading through all of the spam for big GAs or trains, so I understand why people do.

It has become notification spam so better off posting nothing to join, and leaving a win thank you or if there is one, post in the thread a link was shared to declutter for the creator

I've tried to express my gratitude for every single giveaway I've entered

People will assume you're a bot, especially if you enter multiple giveaways from the same creator and saying "Thanks!" on all of these will certainly be a straight road to blacklist town, just clogging the persons inbox at that point. I'd recommend thanking only after you win the giveaway, shows that you do care rather than just mindlessly typing thanks on every single giveaway you enter, as personally I think it shows way more than mindlessly copy pasting a generic thanks message on every giveaway you enter.

I have 0 people in my blacklist (there were 11 at some point, but for various reasons (not for posting "thank you" messages), so probably my opinion is not so expert. But should agree with others that thanking for creating of giveaway, while sounds good, spams the notification box of the creator. Also some people using exactly same wording and formatting under all the giveaways which makes one suspect them of using auto joiners.

95% of them are autojoiners.

At least from the experiences of the people that share infos with me and my own.

23 suspended autojoiners, half of them perma, in the last 2 weeks (and 70+ still in the ticket pipeline...). Only from the tickets of one of my members and mine.

However,

I am pretty sure people only share info of suspicious accounts. It's not like someone's gonna share a few accounts and say "Hey, these are real awesome people, who totally follow the rules".

PS: I am working on something you might like. Will share it with you later. All, I have a new list of rule breakers that I'll be sending your way later.

That happens too on sg. It's impressive when you throw in a name of a very friendly person on sg, as example Kappa, and other ones join in and say "yes, he is really friendly/helpfull/generous/a good dude" etc..

But, of course, is the ammount of positive highlighted users lower as the spotlight on the black sheep ones.

I am curious what you working on.

I still sit on the last list and i am sure i will not have enough time and energy today to finish my work with it.

Something that I believe might make it easier for me to analyze cheaters profile. I started it for myself, but later realized that someone like you might find it helpful as well. It still needs some fine tuning. Unfortunately it's my off today and it's on my "work" system.

Add to the Blacklist anyone who posts "thanks".
Note that I will report them in a support ticket as BOTs if they do the same to multiple GAs I have created.

I am happy to hear otherwise worded words of appreciation.

I don't blacklist for it, but I've certainly started doing higher level giveaways because the bots tend to be level 0, 1 and 2 mostly. I don't mind someone commenting on a GA. Like if they really wanted the game and kinda ranted on about that, not a problem. I'll probably respond and be happy to see that they have genuine interest in winning and playing it.

When there's a load of thanks, or the exact same comment whatever it might be in every single GA, I'm thinking "he's using a bot." I'll not blacklist, but I'll be mad because then I'll probably miss real comments from people that I'd like to respond to.

I'm not even sure what level would be safe. So many shovelware gets priced to 25-30€ and yet available in keystores for cents, that it takes close to nothing to pump up an account to level 3-4.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

From the 23 autojoiners that one of my members and i catched in the last 2 weeks are/were 15x level 0-1 (6 perma suspended), 1x level 2, 3x level 3 (2 perma suspended), 3x level 4 (2 perma suspended), 1x level 5 (1 perma suspended).

From the 70+ autojoiner tickets that are still open, are, if i remember correct, only 2 for level 7 accounts, the rest are mostly level 1-3.

So if you only want to avoid the spamming autojoiners, let's call them the dumb ones, then level 4 or 5 would be enough.
The smarter autojoiners are, mostly, higher leveled and harder to spot. I catch from time to time level 6-10 ones but in a much lower ammount because much harder to collect 100% evidences.

Oh, you're right. I see some accounts on here with high-ish levels with nothing but shovelware as GAs. But the majority of the bottish ones remain below level 3. =)

I'm after creating a whole bunch of GAs last night, and only 1 thank you posted in 1 GA, so chances are, he's not a bot. I made most of them level 4-5 and the odd level 3.

  1. Shovelware doesn't necessarily mean bots. I mean the probability might be high, but at least I wouldn't BL them just for that.
  2. A lot of higher level accounts break rules in other ways, like using multiple-accounts, leaking invite-only GAs, etc. After realizing them, I feel that level 2 is a good enough requirement, else a lot of genuine users might get blocked too sadly.

Well, these are just my opinions from the little time I have spend here.

I have very few people on my blacklist because I honestly can't be bothered. There are a couple people there because they put me on BL first. I noticed that someone who blacklisted me unblacklisted to enter for a game I put in the community train and that annoyed me, so I just blacklist people like that. You don't get to pick and choose. If I'm on your BL for your own petty reason, then leave me there. I'll help them out by returning the BL. =)

I feel bad not saying thank you too, especially when a great giveaway has hundreds of entries and no comments.

Having said that, the whole bots thing does make sense. If you feel like you just absolutely have to say thank you, you could make your thank you very specific to avoid suspicion. Like, comment on the developers previous work, or that sci-fi games with robots are right up your alley, etc.

+1. Funny GIFs and so forth are mostly appreciated and are unlikely to get you a BL unless stated in the giveaway description that they don't want any messages. Some winners don't even want thanks when you win a game as accepting the gift is thanks enough for them.

Hey, I'd not take it personal. Often times people misunderstand and think you're a bot. It's quite easy to get blacklisted if you spam them with the same message without starting a conversation. It feels nice, but once you get 10 messages that are the same from the same person it kind feels redundant and empty on the receiving side.

I never blacklist people for such acts, but other peoples do. I'd suggest either sparking conversations or make more related comments to the games or topics to kinda stand out of the flood of "thanks" people get on giveaway. From there you can only be hopeful less people blacklist you and whitelist you instead.

What I like to do is reply to these generic thank messages, asking a question or just directly asking them if they are a bot. If there's no response even after a few days, well then they must be.

Yeah that also works. I tend to reply to them in the same fashion depending how long the thank you was.

If they reply "thank you" you'll get from me "you're welcome". If they reply "thank u" I'll reply with "yr welcome" and if they go to the "thnx" I'll reply to "yw". 😆

To blacklist you, they have to click on your profile, where they'd see you've entered only 4000 giveaways.
They'd be an idiot if they thought you were a bot.

Funny thing is, until this thread I was very proud of my Comments/GA entries ratio, and always tried to keep it even. It was kinda of an OCD thing, but now I realize how that made things even worse for me, haha

EDIT: English's not my native language, and upon reading your comment again I kinda realized that you might be saying that it was me who was botting before making the thread, because of my ratio?
Well, I have 4000 entries and 2200+ games hidden, and I don't think there's a bot capable of auto-hide games that might not appeal to its master. (Yes, I was not joking about the OCD thing xD)

I still like spamming people's giveaways with my gratitude messages. Unless they explicitly state they don't wish such things. Then I just skip the giveaway altogether. It is game of mine. Trying to generate a unique message for each giveaway. Becomes slightly harder when there is a flood of single game to come up with something else.

As everyone mentioned, suspected botting/inbox spam. You're welcome to say "thanks" in my giveaways (or not). I won't get annoyed, I promise ;)

I'll only blacklist you if I have to chase after you outside of this website to get you to accept your gift, if you're being a pain after you win (like requesting a reroll after viewing the key), if you have too many multiple/unactivated wins, or if you have an obviously fake Steam account. I don't think I've blacklisted anyone who doesn't fit into one of the above.

On another topic, I got an amazing Steam deal today so I'm happy. Who doesn't like negative savings?

It can come across spammy to some. Some also look at it as you may be a bot, especially if you copy and paste word for word on multiple GAs. I personally don't blacklist for that, however if someone doesn't thanks for winning a game I do considering doing it. If I win a game no matter how big or small it may be I always want to express my appreciation and gratitude to them.
