Microsoft has already ended support for Win 7, meaning there will be no more security updates. It makes sense that other companies will stop supporting it as well. It's called "End of Life", and every version of Windows eventually goes through it. You do realize there's 3 versions (although 8.1 is more of an expansion than a true version) after Win 7, and Win 11 is coming out soon? It's not "Goodbye Windows", only "goodbye old version". I've used literally every non-business version of Windows that has come out (yes, even during the DOS era), and Win 10 has been my favorite so far. I highly recommend updating if you haven't yet.

If you're on Windows 7 (or 8 or 8.1), you can proooobably still get the free upgrade to Win 10. I did this on a work laptop about a year back, and it looks like it's still working.

I switched from w7 to w10 back when they introduced the gamepass for pc during E3 or something like that. Only reason i upgraded was the compatibility with xbox games, nothing more than that. I still consider W7 the best experience i've had with windows. The only other OS that could match W7 was XP for me.
W10 is on a tier under both of those, basically in a tier list scenario, XP and 7 to me are S tier, 10 is A tier. Everything else is B tier or lower.
W11... will be a while untill i get that. I intend to use this current right for as much as i can. The day i get performance issues big time, when gaming, that is when i will make a new build and leave this one to the side.

If Microsoft continues with their 8th gen+ decision, I imagine that would incite many people to suddenly switch to linux (people who were lazy to switch to linux long ago already)

Don't think many people will move over to linux. At least, not for gaming. People who do profissional work with computers, i can understand the move.
I've had linux in the past, it came included with a laptop i bought from a school program ages ago, but ended up installing windows xp because at the time, windows xp was the thing i was used to.
If only linux was better for gaming, i would switch in a heart beat. Perhaps in a distant future, linux will become... a valid option for me, but for now it isn't.
