the binding of isaac and nuclear throne. those two created a huge gap between the oldest hardest on my list...

I don't play alot of games but Sekiro was pretty hard at first since it was the first game I got on my laptop ..
p.s. it didn't get any easier,,

Hollow Knight is one i had to give up on because it was far too difficult for me. pity, the game was so interesting and pretty that i really wanted to finish it despite the difficulty.

Really? I played it for YEARS! Still have my disk. Never really had any issue with the AI.

Agree, these lizards are fast and dodgy, and deadly when close.

That's exactly what I meant: these enemies use evading tactics and aren't beelining to you like a heat seeking missile not like simpler Ai does.
P_ Owl did a brilliant vid about Unreal where he discusses the in and outs of the different guns. Watch the enemy AI in these parts.

Radiant Silvergun. God Hand if you're trying to beat the arena superboss (several attempts to date and I still haven't managed). Both La-Mulanas without a guide (you won't beat them without a guide). I also remember suffering like hell to beat Castlevania III, but that was quite a while ago and I'd probably do better at it nowadays.
That's not counting games with bullshit difficulty, of course. Garbage like Zelda II, Noita, final stage in Ninja Gaiden III, Etrian Odyssey. Stuff like that.

Bejewled 3, but only because it was the PS3 version and I went after all the trophies. Gamepad makes some of the already-tricky challenges ridiculous.
I remember Black being extremely hard too, but probably because it was the first console FPS I played.

Barotrauma, the learning the curve is insane.
1.0 has officially been launched so me and 2 friends started a whole new campaign, over 100 hours in, we still get destroyed every now and then.

darks souls tips for the four kings :
actually, I finished it many years ago so it could be pitentially wrong
you need to everything to kill the boss as fast as possible, because the four kings appears at a set period of time, so if you can kill them fast, you won't have to deal with them at the same time
use equipement ( ring and shield ) that increase stamina recovery
~strategy to kill the boss~attack him at close range : you won't get hit by his sword, you will get hit by his hand instead, that will deal on minor damage
pay attention in case he does his "chop" attack at close range (occasionally)

Or just make a tank build and do it the chad way - by bonking them with the big thing until health is 0

blasphemous is pretty easy tbh, and i poise through dark souls 1 with heavy armor and big weapons and ending up pretty easy too, DMC5 is really giving me a hard time to 100%
i was kickout in steam family sharing and did not 100% ds3 and i was so close too only farming the covenants item and getting some rings

Probably God Hand. I dunno if I would play hard mode nowadays like I did 15 years ago :x
For Salt and Sanctuary I remember I just put everything into the stat that increases your equipment load, and I could pretty much yolo it with heavy armor, a greatsword and a greatshield, while still having super fast rolls :D

There are many adventure games which are nearly impossible (well, unless you use a guide). Does it qualify as "hard"?
If yes -- I remember Riven's last puzzle as something so intricate, I would never ever in a million years figure it out without a walkthrough.

This is a great thread!
The NES/SNES games that I listed some will consider easy today due to all the info being out there on the net(guides, videos etc.), but back when these titles came out the internet wasn't a thing so keep that in mind.
If you told anyone back then you beat these they wouldn't believe you(with the exception of Contra due to the code). You would have to have a bunch of kids come to your house and do it in front of them and then the other kids word of mouth to others at school would be the proof. Most of these I never saw beat till many, many years later due to the internet.
As far as newer titles there were hard ones, but I'm not exactly sure how they stackup. I haven't really messed with any of the "Souls" type games.
Cuphead is one of the newer titles that sticks out a lot to me. I haven't beaten yet, but will one day.
Nuclear Throne... so close to beating it multiple times.
Enter The Gungeon.. I haven't spent a lot of time on it, but it's definitely up there.
The Binding of Isaac Rebirth.. awesome game.
Hollow Knight.. one of the best Metroidvanias of all time. It has some challenging boss fights.

Baba is You. I've been stuck on a level for freaking three years

I feel it defeats the purpose - if it were a story-driven game I would use a walkthrough to follow the story, but since the whole point is puzzling walkthrough felt cheap

That's a long time. When you do finally end up beating it, I'm sure it will feel awesome. I wish you the best in solving the puzzle, sooner than later.

Backpack Twins. A platformer where you have to keep switching between two characters back and forth all the time. At the beginning it is more a puzzle game, but later it becomes precision platformer demanding godlike reflexes. Had to drop it for the sake of my sanity.

Barony, Super Meat Boy The Binding of Isaac are the first three that come to mind. Plague inc: Evolved also has its times to challenge.
As for old school games? I'll go with Monster Party, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Tower of Druaga. Tower of Druaga is the most challenging of the lot, especially since picking certain items and choices can lock you out of a win. Now imagine that happening in a game which was made before the creation of things like YouTube and Game FAQs. Yeah.

Not to confuse this with my old topic.
So, what are some of the hardest games YOU have ever played? Other than real life. That will NEVER count.
Some of the hardest for me, and admit that I really suck at a lot of games, might have to be in no real order.
Blasphemous
Salt and Sanctuary (STILL getting my ass handed to me in that)
Kizuna Encounter tag battle - easy enough until you get to the second to last guy. Took me over a year to beat him and only ONE time!
Dark Souls 1 - The ONLY one I was never able to beat even once DAMN YOU FOUR KINGS & ANOR LONDO!
Dungeon Magic: Sword of the Elements
Can't remember some but for now...
Maybe a GA later if I can remember.
