What was your assumption about the world that proved to be false and you ended up being shocked?

That there was more good then evil in the world.

I grew up assuming that quicksand was a real problem.

that world can be a fair place, too bad it proved me wrong

I used to think it mattered how good you were at something. Now I know it only matters how good you can get other people to believe you are

I still remember the moment that I realized that I would someday cease to exist. I think before that I just assumed that I would go on forever. Needless to say, I was very young at the time.

That family would always stick together.

I used to assume that "innocent until proven guilty" was actually the way modern legal systems worked. Silly me. sigh

I didn't like zucchinis growing up, so my mom convinced me they were just cooked cucumbers. Still don't like zucchinis.

I thought it was possible for people to become old and wise enough that nothing in this wide world could then shock them.

The world, alas, can come up with new, ingenious ways of shocking us all.

I was way too nice and trusting of people when I was younger. I soon learned that the world is full of douchebags. lol.

I learned that politcians mostly also don't really know what they are doing

I assumed the universe being deterministic, until I learned about Quantum Mechanics.

I assumed my dad was always right -- then I realized that lots of people think they are always right, with directly conflicting views, and concluded that none of them were always right. Which, unfortunately, made every single one of them mad at me and made them try to fight each other to try to take control over my mind. For those interested in the outcome, I ended up just leaving the arena and seeing the facts for myself.

I don't know, maybe that the government and other authorities had the everyday people's best interests at heart ahead of corporate ones. The sad reality is that things always seem to be monetarily-motivated nowadays, which is why so many of our problems never seem to get solved even though it may be possible. Just goes to show you how unevolved we are as a species.

That by being good to others they will in turn be good to you. Instead people will use you and discard you when you're no good to them anymore.

I grew up in the desert. Where I come from, you can see rain clouds rolling in, and when the rain actually comes, it's black as night outside. The heavens open up, and it pours so hard that even with your windshield wipers on high, you STILL can't see the road!

When I moved to the Pacific Northwest, I was stunned to see it raining and complete daylight outside... and it didn't RAIN, it misted. Blew my mind! We rarely get what I would call "real" rain around here. lol~

And now when I hear Have you ever seen the rain on a sunny day?, I can say, "Yes, I have!"

That growing up actually meant something, from school to university to work it is all the same old shit.
