I really don't understand why you can bump trades but not discussions. That would prevent people from having to comment random trash on their threads.

bad idea. If no one is commenting, it means no one is interested. Let the thread die.

Trading is different, you're basically advertising your wares. Having active traders be near the top makes sense

I see why you would want one, but there are certain users on this site who would use it to keep their crybaby garbage threads alive a lot longer than the natural lifespan. I don't mean you, or even most users, but the vocal minority.

But wouldn't they now just put a random comment in? There is not much difference in my opinion, except with a button, your thread actually remains a bit more "clean"

I agree. If there is a button for people to bump threads, that will be nicer. :3. But then, OPs couldn't know who bumped it. :O.

Yes, but it's just as easy to write a script that automatically comments every half an hour. The only real effect would be cleaning up threads.

Trades and threads are different. I doubt that people use scripts for bumping threads, because it's really unnecessary.

It's unnecessary for thread owner, not other people. In trades section, OP wants to bump his/her own thread. In here, other people bump it.

We want to get rid of "bump" comments via this. We see a new thread with giveaway/train and people only bump it. We don't see anything but bumping comments. If there is a bump button for people, they can bump it while we don't need to see bump comments and read and add to the discussion itself clearly.

Yes. Thread owners can also bump too, like they're doing here sometimes bumping their own threads.

I'm not sure if it can be done via userscript since it affects forum in general.

Well, I don't see any bad side of it since I didn't encounter people that bumps their own threads very often. Just can be needed sometimes since it's easy for thread owner to find their own threads.

maybe we should have a new discussion category: "giveaway/train"
Then there'd be no need to bump

Well, people still will want to bump their threads to come to top rather than being at bottom. And some people create threads about other things in their life and these belong to off-topic or general and some argue about those in the threads while others bump it.

No, please. I get tired of seeing people bump their own threads constantly without the button.
They'd just use the button to constantly keep their useless threads at the top (more so than they do now).
And then ... heavens help us ... they'd use a combination of both and decimate us all with spammage. :X

At least as it is now, I can see who's doing it and add them to Sighery's SGIgnore. :X

You can't? I do it all the time and no-one seems to complain.

Edit: Oh, you mean with a dedicated "bump" button? No need for that.

I don't understand why almost everyone bashes this idea (even in similar threads) because it would be possibly abused by OPs. Why not implement it with control mechanisms? We've seen cg implement other complex functionality, so why not this?

Besides, it' s a pity missing on great comments/discussions because of bump post flood.

Here's some brainstorming:

  • Thread creators cannot bump their own threads.
  • Bumping is limited to 1 per user per X minutes/hours/days. One user can bump a specific thread up to Y times.
  • Bumps should be introduced as a separate metadata for threads. So one could just introduce a new sorting option for the discussions page based on it, without affecting current site functionality.
  • Closed threads cannot be bumped, as with posts.

Yea, you'll still get bump and spam posts, but I believe the situation will be very different.

as far as i see people are bumping their own thread only every 24h [Exception is a discussion] but you can filter now after created date so you dont miss out on new topics .
nobody can answer on closed threads . except they get reopened .
Especially the thread is 3 years old :D

If you need to put all sorts of restrictions and contingencies and rules in place to make an idea work, it's probably not a great idea to begin with.

Permalink

I think we're nitpicking here but, I would not say that the restrictions are required to make it work rather than required to prevent abuse.

Unless we're fine with the fact that currently anyone is capable of bumping their own thread endlessly either way. Then yes, this suggestion will never be considered.

This isn't terribly different than what the sister site (SteamTrades) allows, except ST allows OPs to bump their own posts once per hour.

Then let me simplify what can be proposed here:

Any open discussion can be bumped via a Bump button once per day by a non-OP user

Once this has been tested out, the frequency can be increased closer to once per hour. This would prevent OP abuse.
