Why?
They'll just end up replacing their game-playing entertainment with something else, probably TV watching. I don't think it's very likely that someone will stop playing games and then turn around and fill that time with anything especially constructive. At least if you're playing a game you're interacting with it, rather than just staring blankly at the screen.

:) oh, i know from my own experience it is actually very likely that someone would do something constructive instead with the earned time
everyone is fighting either for Your Time or for Your Attention or even for Both, so why wouldn't you join the fight? :)

I know I could do a LOT of constructive stuff instead....but I don't :)

Either they have an addiction, which trying to drop that will either immediately lead you into another addiction or fail quickly, or they aren't into games enough for it to be an achievement or that they were trying.

I'm doing something constructive AND playing. What now?

One psycho-logical rl achievement where it will never be tracked or commemorated in any special way.. Or all those other gaming achievements one could earn at that same time, while filling their time with fun and entertainment? Yeah, it's a tough choice.

I could stop eating breakfast in the mornings any time I want and never eat breakfast in the morning again. I just don't want to do that.

Drinking alcohol started as a mere hobby (in a sense) too once.

True, but in most cases it stays a hobby (or pasttime, whatever) without spiraling into addiction so I don't think it's entirely fair to say simply enjoying video games and not wanting to quit is automatically equivalent to alcoholism. For some people it might be but that's usually not the case.

Good for you. Me, I trust myself juuuuuust fine with my gaming and all. It's an interesting thought experiment, I guess, but to game is to stimulate the mind, to place oneself in a billion different scenarios and live out entire new universes full of life. It is art brushed by the creativity of developers and writers and designers straight onto your screen for you to experience and enjoy. In story telling can man truly create whole worlds, and only in video games can those worlds actively be lived in by others!
This is all too beautiful of a thing to just shirk for a year.

Addiction has science behind it, dropping one is likely to lead to another one which may be worse.
"Good news mom, I've stopped playing Halo, now I am addicted to the slots!"

Psycho-logical? You're right. You'd have to be a psycho to find any of that logical.

they didn't have a lot of things we have nowadays, and that doesn't make any of those things a habit

There are no "natural sexual needs". Some people go their whole lives without having sex.

You know what's the most beneficial thing for a gamer?
To be able to Not play Any video game for at least 1 Full Year, that is the most important achievement a gamer can achieve, it is a psychological achievement, after which one gains oneself trust boost.
