for example I was reading a series of books that had been recommended to me, the Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny. the ten novels and six short stories made for some great reading and then, horror of horrors, the next book is written by a completely different author. ok, maybe it's not so bad, Brandon Sanderson did a great job with Wheel of Time so maybe there's some hope.... wait, prequel series? and then contradicting facts established in the creators works and it turns out Zelazny had specifically stated he didn't want someone else to take over the series?
so yeah, it ends on a cliffhanger. still well worth reading and it's a better excuse for a cliffhanger than most have (muttermuttercancellingfirelfyandcarnivalemuttermutter)

but it got me thinking. we see cliffhanger endings in all forms of media. TV, games, movies (I wonder if Empire Strikes Back would be anywhere near as popular if Return of the Jedi had never been made to tie it up?), books... they even show up in real life. all those people whose personal stories intersected with out own for a while and then they just got Put On A Bus...

and what did it make me think? well obviously it made me think of a silly joke where I'd make a post that just

ends in mid sentence. ok, I'm done with that now. I promise

but it also inspired the questions of off topicness that are

  1. what is your favourite cliffhanger which was resolved?

  2. what is the unresolved cliffhanger you would most like to see resolved?

too many good things got the cancel... series like firefly or games like hl2 (obviously...), but to finish them up years later ends almost every time in a big disaster... so i dunno.
there's also the really bad stuff that tries to end on a cliffhanger to create some sort of pseudo-hype, like homefront back in the day.

can't remember any cliffhangers that got resolved, but i wish they'd have finished stuff like firefly, twin peaks (well, debatable, but that series rocked so much i could have watched 2346fg8 more episodes), kings, space: above and beyond, XIII, hl2:ep2, rage, dino crisis... man, there's a lot of good stuff that got canned :/

I don't mind for tv because they hae a regular release schedule and don't cost me more to get resolution to a cliffhanger. Other than that, fuck 'em.

This is a cheater response, because I'm not answering EITHER of your questions, but:

My favorite cliffhanger is one that doesn't get resolved -- and I wouldn't want it to be. It fits the story so well: The ending of the original Italian Job (the one with Michael Caine). It's just so perfect.
