Groupees isn't the same website it was when this series started either. Not even Humble or Indiegala are the same as they were a couple of years back. We're experiencing the twilight of gaming bundles as a practical concept.

They did have that one amazing bundle with Midboss in it a while back (and the other games in it weren't bad, either.) That said, yeah, mostly bundles have gone downhill outside of the monthly stuff.

I wonder why? There's more great indie games out there than ever nowadays, so you'd think they'd have a lot of stuff to add to them. Maybe it's just too hard to sort the wheat from the chaff and all that.

I suspect various noted companies aren't as keen as putting their games in them as they used to. I remember the Puppygames blog ranting about how bundles rip off devs.

That and most bundle hunters have hit the point where there's not much that's not super new to get and as such trying to put such games in a bundle may be too costly. Same reason why steam sales seem duller compared to the first one that people took part in.

I've talked about this in other places, so for some this will be repeated information:

I've been listening to indie devs talk about the state of the market, game bundles and sales, and there's a reason why indie devs don't want to put their games in bundles quite so quickly anymore, and why selling your game for cheap in a sale might not be quite as good either.

Back when bundles first started, getting your game in a bundle was great for marketing. While your game might not have earned a fortune from the bundle itself, indie devs noted that after the bundle, sales were generally quite high compared to before the bundle, and even months after the bundle, they still had increased sales. The added exposure of being in a bundle made it all worth it.

Fast forward a bit and the market got really saturated with bundles. Bundles and an ever growing amount of really really bad games on steam. Due to the amount of bundles, the added exposure of being in a bundle really adds very little value for the developer. This makes sense as being in a bundle when bundles were released every few weeks was something special, being in a bundle when some bundle sites release several bundles per week really means nothing. Worse yet, you're feeding the grey market with keys if you put your game in a bundle, which in turn can result in lost "proper" sales.

This also in a way explains why we see slightly lower discounts on steam. Pricing your game low used to be a good marketing tool, people would see your game and would be more likely to buy it. With the current state of Steam, pricing your game low means that it's more likely to just disappear in the flood of asset flips, hentai sliding puzzles and baby's first games+. Thus many developers, and indie publishers have taken to price their games higher than they would have 3-4 years ago, as being more expensive really does not hurt your sales. Heck, pricing your game under 10€ might even cost you sales compared to pricing it over 10€.

So this explains why we've seen a bit of a decrease in bundle quality. For groupees it's doubly bad, as they've also got a reputation as being a garbage monger among devs, so it's hard for them to get some really good games in their bundles. Something one of their staff commented on back during the Holiday Helpings debacle, when they promised more games than they had been able to sign on, and had to extend the bundle several times just because they could not find any games to fill the slots.

There is a pretty big, fully fledged market for good indie games of basically any genre at this point, because they had time build up youtube channels, reviewers/articles at bigger sites, forums and other groups of likeminded people who spread the info of games existing to the potential buyers. So they don't need bundles for visibility, and nowadays I more often see bad games trying to pass a few copy by having a huge discount on them, so maybe they want to stay away from that look.
I think these contributed to the lower discounts (still pretty good ones, and most indies are very reasonably priced) and decreasing bundling overall.

Yup, it's almost like as if Groupees is finally relieved to end this shovelware madness.

I imagine they'll just slap another name on it like they have been and some people will keep foolishly blind pre-ordering said shovelware because they can't seem to control the unhealthy habit of paying into the vicious cycle.

For some nostalgia... here's the first two donations a Groupees Be Mine bundle ever had (image 1)... and the first thirty (image 2)...
As I recall, traffic to the site was pretty heavy and they weren't expecting that. But this was right around the kick-off of many bundle sites. Humble had started it, and had been going for a few months at a slow pace, but by this time, Indie Gala, Indie Royale, and a handful of crappier attempts had also been at it for a little while now. In addition, some of the initial Alienware and IGN Prime giveaways had people hunting for game deals... and exploits...

Humble had started it, and had been going for a few months at a slow pace

More than a few months. Actually it was about 21 months between the first Humble Bundle (May 2010) and the first Groupees bundle (Feb 2012). In the early days months would go by between Humble bundles and it wasn't until 2011 that the pace really began picking up.

* the first Humble bundle was actually run by developer Wolfire Games before they created the Humble Bundle brand to manage the bundle side of things

The first Be Mine was not the first Groupees bundle.
They had done some music stuff, and their first game thing was in March 2011.

How far we've come. :P
People were intrigued to pay $5 for one game and one music album.

Granted that may be true, but since we are speaking of Groupees history as it relates to Humble Bundle (a game-focused discussion) then to me that begins with the first Be Mine bundle.

I tend to be sarcastic in my remarks. I know it's the lowest form of wit, but after 35 years? yeah, it's all I got left.

You haven't got much left to live, anyway, that should give you some solace.

Uhm you seem to be the jackass around people with your constant snide "sarcastic" remarks (which you claim yourself to make) not me, and for some reason you started out not liking me for whatever reason.

Or to just quote you "It was a joke :)", same sarcastic one from me, learn to take one if you keep tossing them out yourselves.

I can't say I feel Groupees is worth much of my time anymore, so I only gave the chat a few cursory glances during the preorder.

Still, just with that I did see that in other comments (beyond the one Lugum quoted above) they clarified and even emphasized that it was all specific to the Be Mine label, though I didn't see any clear indication as to why they were choosing to retire it. I mean, it's not like their build-up negative reputation was due to Be Mines (despite the subscription fiasco), rather than their open-armed embrace of trashware, dropping of speciality bundles [eg, such as JAST ones], and their mostly limiting the rare decent game to grab bags.

Which is to say, their quality has been bad across the board, Be Mine quality dip and presentation issues have mostly just been taken as more of the same broader site decline. Rather, dropping that last bit of nostalgia for "old Groupies" seems like a losing gamble. Still, by this point, I suppose any change of pace could be a good step for the site to take. Just not really the most intuitive option for them to have decided to go with. :P

Personally, I'm just curious if my coins'll ever be able to be applied to anything half-way decent in the future. Maybe it's just my lack of investment in the site in recent years, but I've gotten the impression that non-game bundles may have declined in quality as well. I've been itchin' to break from the site completely, but I just haven't managed to find anything worth investing the coins, up to this point.

Isn't Chess: King of Crowns Chess Online just a reskin of Ancients of Fasaria: Chess Club 2.0 that was removed from Steam? Looks weirdly familiar, and being in the bundle with another fasaria game...
There is one or two interesting game in the bundle, but doesn't fit into the budget. At least it's not a bad bundle.
(funny how every game in the grab bag starts with Cat)

Most likely, and the other fasaria game, someone questions on the board if there is going to be any new update, and dev being vague about it and most likely, these games will get abandoned also.

I think you may be on to something there. Also, take a look at the comment from this curator:

"Be careful if this game in bundle, Publisher revoke their old game key from 3-party if don't use it in limit time"

yes, asshole dev rereleased same games and disabled old keys and made the old versions unplayable by removing the game files

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yep. I came here to post basically the same things, this dev has a bad track record of revoking unused keys, delisting their games and making them unplayable, then re-releasing the same game under a new name.

Ancients of Fasaria: Chess Club became AoF Chess Club 2.0 which became Chess: King of Crowns Chess Online.
AoF World Online became Ancients of Fasaria MMORPG which became Fasaria World: Ancients of Moons.
There are also probably more games they have deleted and reskinned/resold under a new name.

So if anyone is interested in playing the 3 games by U Game Me publisher (Chess: King of Crowns Chess Online, Hate Free Heroes RPG 2.0, and Fasaria World: Ancients of Moons) I suggest activate the keys right away, download the games, and turn off auto updates to prevent an "update" that will make them unplayable.
