If you fancy watching a reimagining of 'The Count of Monte-Cristo' set in a very distant future and from a different perspective, or want to see a very visually unconventional anime, go for Gankutsuou. It's the kind you will either love or hate after a couple of episodes. Bear with the visuals at the beginning, the vertigo will pass.

Try Katanagatari. The characters are well created, it's funny and the main protagonist is just awesome ^^
Not to forget that the artstyle is something special.

I really hate it when creators add some 12 y.o. kids and try to make them look sexy. I'M NOT A PEDO, I'M NOT INTERESTED IN CHILD BODIES AND I DON'T F**KING WANT TO SEE RETARDED RELATIONSHIPS IN ACTION ANIME.
Other than that, it's pretty good ^^

Well, she's not ecchi so that's not really a problem for me. Compared to other anime this one is well in the context of ok.

Surprised nobody mentioned these yet.
One Punch Man - Probably one of the most popular anime of this year. It's very likely you've already heard of it/seen it, but I just wanted to leave this here in case you haven't. Opening
Parasyte - Fairly dark anime. Quite a bit of gore, but has a story that will hook most people, quality animation and great music. Opening

I'd suggest these.
Cowboy Bebop Great anime. Good style and music.
Cromartie Highschool Series itself is 26 eps long but 12 mins each. great slapstick comedy series if you want to give comedy a shot.
Baccano! Haven't seen this myself but it is on my watch list. seems like something you would enjoy.
Clannad is great i would recommend it or if your more of a VN person it is coming to steam on i think the 28th.
Also anything high up on my list i would recommend.
My MAL List.

log horizon is in the same lane as SAO.
If you search on google on terms like anime like SAO you can find quit a few lists.
And there are quit a few that are better than SAO like Log horizon, only second season is lacking in my opinion.
other great anime:
Death note
code geass

So whether people know it or not, I'm a rather huge anime fan. I enjoy anime because it seems fresh, the animation is different from watching a typical TV show. Bright colors perhaps?.....Who knows.
I've been having trouble finding anime that I like because I'm just so bloody picky sometimes. I love intrigue, plot, twists, fun characters, and if possible cute girls but that's only an optional. I love my plots dark and mysterious, though I can't seem to STOP finding these blasted animes that leave me in my room for a week in a depression from the emotion. Anyway, I also don't mind the occasional slice-of-life if it's done to my liking, (list below) but I've never really been fond of the high-school plots much.
Anyway, here's a small list of what I've watched:
Spice and Wolf: The only anime that I LOVED as a slice of life. Currently purchasing and reading LN as they come out. The best female main protagonist that I've ever seen.
Stein's Gate: A pretty good anime that doesn't really pick up until episode 10, but then intrigue steps in. Some of the content was a tad questionable but it let off eventually and I enjoyed it very much.
Psychopass: The plot-line was a tad clique and in that respect it was kinda boring (cops vs bad guy, big evil plot blah blah). The main villain was one of the only reasons I continued. He was just masterful in his concept of human life and manipulation. Sadly, 3rd and 4th season coming sigh have to watch so I can end the plot-line.
Hellsing Ultimate: Character development wasn't very good, but the action and story were quite nice even if they were only 10 episodes. Tad too much gore but I don't mind it too much.
Tales of the Abyss: My first Anime that I ever watched, great characters and story, but I've always liked plots from video games like the Tales Of series so meh. Kinda bittersweet ending.
Valkyrie Chronicles: Again, based off a video game, it's a great story with humor to boot. I love the characters and the story plot. Mainly watched it for the sake of being able to watch the story without having to play the game.
Sword Art Online: Ended up dropping this one on episode 12 or 13 as it seemed like wasted potential. I looked ahead a couple months later to see if people said it was better and i found.....My word why do they put some things in kids shows. Though it already had some stuff that kids shouldn't have been watching in the first place so meh.
From the New World: This one had political intrigue and morality questions which were enjoyable. The setting was also enjoyable. Really hated the sad aspects which made for great story, but stupid depression that I couldn't shake for days. Also had some random stuff that just seemed out of place.
Fate/Zero & Fate Stay/Night Unlimited Blade Works: The most intriguing aspect of this anime was the reasoning behind the fighting. Everyone has there own goals, their own motives, their own unique power that you eventually discover, and more. Fate/Zero had better story and character development, but Fate Stay/Night UBW had better action.
That's it off the top of my head, Anyone think they know a great political, deep mystery, action, steampunk anime? Or an anime that's funny? I've never watched any comedy anime because I'm afraid of the plot missing within. Considered Clannad but.....that emotion thing......I had considered Guilty Crown but it's got mixed reviews but my word the plot and animation look superb. Though I hate lack of character development and plot holes :/
Thanks to anyone who can offer an opinion.
