I've watched bunch of anime and my preferences are pretty standard like Dragonball, Naruto, Fairy Tail, One Piece, Conan etc. Or even less known like Fate/Stay Night, CLANNAD, Steins;Gate.
I like anime because mostly they have bunch of creativity behind the productions and not being restricted in terms of ideas.
While sometimes I'm annoyed by fillers, another times they serve as background explanations. Taking example of Naruto, the manga doesn't even state it, but the fillers allow the audiences to see what happens behind Akatsuki creations. And so on and so forth.

Fate/Stay Night Fate or Unlimited Blade Works? Because for the first one I wanted to punch the main character in the face 90 % of the time ....No offense, but his attitude was ... hard to bear. I was shocked as I watch Fate/Zero afterwards. How can two animes with the identical premise be so different?

You might enjoy FLCL, except for MC, but I think everything that exist movie, tv, anime, books ,always have some type pf whiny character. That shit has like no exposition. lol
Samurai Champloo still my fav.
Comment has been collapsed.
I feel the opposite, I like the pilot of SC, but love the rest of it way more.
Baseball episode is awesome.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'll give FLCL a go then, also I told you already, Shamploo didn't click. I'll try waching it again but I played the 1st two/three episodes and wasn't hooked.
Comment has been collapsed.
I prefer anime that doesn't have any of that stuff. It seems rare, but short animes tend to be better. The longer ones always have filler and more tropes because well they just do. FLCL and Stein's;Gate are two great short animes that don't have a whole lot of exposition or filler. They aren't completely filled with tropes and fan service and all that.
As to why I like anime i'm not sure. I don't watch it all the time, but I tend to like darker more serious ones. While I can't really get emotionally invested in a lot of drama tv shows (i get into some, but not as much as I have anime) I have cried from some anime. not like full on tears, but manly watery eyes of course.
Comment has been collapsed.
There has been a number of recomendations for both FLCL and Stein's Gate, I'll watch them both then, and see if they are more of my liking.
I'm a crybaby to be honest when it comes to books/movies/series as soon as anything there is remotely moving... hahaha
Comment has been collapsed.
If you like those, there are probably more you'd like, just a matter of finding them. Anime is such a vast medium(we're going with medium right?) that you have to wade through a lot of crap to find the gold.
ah, books and anime for me. anything else and i don't seem to care lol. Which is great since no one watches anime with me so i'm alone for the waterworks lol

Steins;Gate is my favorite. And no, didn't notice anything like you said. At least no obvious.
I think that the writers for manga/anime stick to a certain theme and way of progressing their story. Just like every American movie script feels like the same, with the cliche and overused themes and development, the same rule applies to manga and anime writers. It's to make the reader/watcher feel more comfortable and familiar. Familiarity and comfort sells better that strangeness and originality.
Still, this doesn't mean that every movie/manga/anime are the same - simply that the majority of them will have some kind of a familiar pattern to them (which changes based on the country and culture from which the product comes). My guess is that the reason you feel that way about anime (generalizing them with these "points") is probably because you've been watching a lot of a certain kind of anime, the "regular" one which follows this certain "pattern". If you have a look around, you're likely to find something which suits you better (and which doesn't have that kind of stuff you say you dislike about anime).
Comment has been collapsed.
Comment has been collapsed.
Sure I was generalizing and if I watched the more mainstream one is because I thought they would make a better entry point than something more obscure. I'll be sure to watch Steins Gate.
I also reckon that my main problem with is is that I'm not used to the tropes that much, but lately I've been being more critical with that kind of stuff (not only here, but towards western production more) Just to name an example in The Good Dinosaur "Mufasa 2.0 dies and when he did I was like, if there's a father ghost scene I'm done, there was, so I promtly closed the movie"

Who does not like cute and beautiful girls/animals/etc?
My favourite series: Working!!, Another, Steins;Gate, YuruYuri, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, A Certain Magical Index

Is SoL mostly made around high/middle school drama? Or are there any more mature ones.
Comment has been collapsed.
Mostly yes however there are a few which I would consider to fit the "more mature" category. Some examples which I think fit that are Welcome to the NHK, Mushishi, Usagi Drop. From those I've watched only NHK and I loved it, lots of people have recommended me to watch the other 2 but I haven't started them yet.
Comment has been collapsed.
i believe it doesn't have so many mature SoL anime, so you don't want SoL with school drama - love story thing or ... ??? umm well, here are some that not much involved in those school stuff:
Byousoku 5 Centimeter, Gin no Saji, Genshiken, Barakamon, Non Non Biyori
based on which more tag you like, mostly Drama, Romance, Comedy. I simply love SoL because it close to real life, especially something like Non Non Biyori, watching it make me feel peaceful and i want to jump into that countryside so badly x0

I prefer shorter series that lack the filler.
Overall, I enjoy anime because it's a source of science fiction/fantasy that comes to a conclusion and doesn't get cancelled like US television shows in the same genre. Even if the anime is a currently airing series, I've found it more reliable to watch.
The episodes are also short so I can fit them in whenever I desire or quickly perform a marathon. I've enjoyed Korean period dramas as well, but they're roughly three times the length and require more attention to subtitles so I can't multitask as much.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't watch anime, but I do read manga! :D I enjoy the creative plot and how the characters intermingle with each other.
Faves: One Piece, Onepunch Man, Mob Psycho 100, Boku no Hero Academia, Red Storm (which is actually a manhwa), and
Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari (Rising of the Shield Hero)
Comment has been collapsed.
Oooh, I forgot to mention OPM on the OP, I liked it quite a lot, not only because it was a break from the "hero journey" stuff, but also due to how it seemed to poke fun and all these comedy tropes I have issues with.
I, on the other hand, couldn't stomach One Piece, I mean, I watched some of the episodes (like 50 or so mb) when it was aired on TV, but it kept getting more and more absurd, not to mention the filler arcs or that there is like 700 eps and no close ending which I sincerely don't have the time to watch.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, OPM practically shoots down those tropes a mile away after getting in sight. :p
Ah, really? Well it is indeed absurd in its own sense. That's the thing about anime though - for long-running ones, there are always fillers and that's just complete doodoo. When it comes to mangas, you don't really see those filler arcs. But back to the anime, yeah, One Piece is absurd and it gets even more outrageous with each other... but I think that's what I like about it. It's somewhat eccentric with the way it unravels, at least in my opinion, and it's captivating how the characters interact or don't interact with each other sometimes. To each their own though. ^-^

This is exactly why I hate anime because of these..''deeper monologues'' .The protagonist is basically talking to himself and states the obvious that even a 5 year old can sense.I am sorry boys but this is autistic behaviour go watch some real series.Btw that japanese screeching voices-> huge turn off. Also if a boy like anime 99% he is into hentai which is -.- just a girl's advice .
Comment has been collapsed.
that's some quality cringe right there
also what are "real series" lol most things on television are pretty fucking trash right now. all of the good shows have already ended, and whats left is full of more tropes and cancer than a lot of anime, so i don't see what your point is.
Comment has been collapsed.
autistic behaviour
japanese screeching voices
hentai
What anime did you watch, Umaru-chan? Next time, watch anime that takes itself seriously instead of watching what's popular and then criticizing it as a whole. You don't see watching Supernatural, Fuller House, or The Walking Dead and considering TV series trash in general.
Comment has been collapsed.
autistic behaviour is inner monologue and endless exposition as the op said which are common themes to all anime.Actually I think the reason I deeply hate anime is because they harboring pedophiliasm and incest as most of them have countless references.Anyhow.it 's my opinion ofc Tv now actually is trash apart from GOT.maybe go play video games or even baskeball with ur friends than watching shit damaging staff.Brb I got better things to do than talking about anime -.-
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah so you deeply hate on anime because a few anime series have a few references to incest, yet think that GOT is good, a serie which have countless of references to incest? Sorry, but I find that funny.
Not to mention the generalisation of animes after probably not having watched any, or at most a handful of the mainstream series
Comment has been collapsed.
At least they are not cartoonish childish crap.I stay away from weebs me and my girlfriends. Also I watch GOT only for John Snow-Kit harington cause he is super hot.Mainstream is not always bad at least I got more topics to discuss with my friends than fucking anime.Go to hell weebs we hate u
Comment has been collapsed.
Something being animated does not mean that it's childish, there are tons of animes intended for older adult audiences, I could give examples, but I don't think you'd want them either way. If I somehow thought wrong, just say the word and I'll give some sources
If you only watch GOT because you think that one of the actors, an actor that isn't on screen that often (at least not before I quit watching after s02), then why not simply download a picture of him and ignore the show, since the show involves incest, which is the thing you hate enough to condemn a whole medium for. I mean, if you condemn all animes because a few series have those references, why not condemn all live-action series as well, since there are quite a number of shows there too that have those references as well.
No, of course mainstream isn't always bad, I didn't claim that either. But if you only watch the mainstream stuff you both miss out on a lot of other good interesting stuff and you get more of the overused tropes, which is something that you seemed not to like about anime (if I understood your earlier posts correctly?)
Who's to say that you got more topics to discuss with your friends than those who enjoy anime? I mean, really. (Not sure whether you're refering to more topics in general or more different types of topics, but either way that'd differ from person to person, no matter if they like or dislike a certain kind of medium)
And regarding your last sentance: Sure, go ahead and hate if you want. Personally I'd rather not be disrespectful against other peoples hobbies and insult them for liking it, but that's just me, apparently.
Sorry for the wall-of-text by the way, I tried to cut the length, but this is as far as I managed.

Aoi Hana its my favorite anime, and it kind off encapsulates what is what i like about anime and manga, different stories that one would hardly see on other mediums, treated with the maturity and respect, beautiful art, and music.

Try to Watch Animes from those directors: Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Hosoda, Mamoru Oshii, Shinishiro Watanab and all from Studio Ghibli if you want serious things and without cliches and more adult themes, or simply look watch Anime or read manga with genrer Seinen / Josei....!
simple!
Comment has been collapsed.
Meh, fights and action scenes are more of a let down than anything else. It's 10 minutes calling out moves (which I kinda dislike, I'm okey with the hai! ha! kyaaa! noises, but don't name your attacks for fuck's sake) and then 3 secs of uber duber speciall effects clashing.
I'll look into the ones you said, Seinen I assume is the "genre" aimed at adults?
Comment has been collapsed.
The problem of many anime series today is a lack of creativity for sure. Many of them just put some stupid comedy + fan-service scenes (ecchi stuff) which make me get bored really soon. It's hard to find a good anime like Black Jack or Ghost In The Shell or movies from Ghibli studio (Pixar from Japan :) ). I was also read few light novels but then I just throw it away because of the same reason like why i get bored with anime
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh, Ghibli movies are good, I watched Mononoke and the Floating Castle back in its day. I did like them.
Comment has been collapsed.
code geass - if you havent seen it yet ^^
death note
Sure a bit of ecchi can't hurt,. but and too much (golden boy) can just be comedy (DearS).
Desert boy, or whatever it was called - bored me to tears though, fan service or no,. it just didn't have much plot.
Comment has been collapsed.
Probably it's Ansatsu kyoushitsu
About killing their teacher... Well that's the one that popular in these days
I don't like anime, I love it :P
My number one is Gintama
No, I don't have one
It's not because it's perfect.. But if you love it you started to accept the cons
...
If you want skip the fillers, read the manga.. or just skip the episodes
The others are
-Working! -> Started with a joke, ended beautifully
-Steins;Gate -> Mad scientist + mindblown
-Katekyo Hitman Reborn -> You'll probably hate episode 1-19, because they looked like fillers, but they're not
-Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou(Daily lives of highschool boys) -> Boys are really interesting creature xD
-Full Metal Panic! - > Robots and war maniac apparently are pretty funny
-Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu -> I couldn't ask for a better laugh than this
-Carnival Phantasm -> Still the best crossover anime
-Silver Spoon -> Made by FMA author.. It's really different, because it's all about agricultural
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't usually like skipping content tho, just out of fear that I'll miss something important, like char development or plot points, so I tend not to do it and stomach through the fillers.
I'll give some of the ones you recommended a go for sure tho, thanks for the answer.

The only thing that differs between Anime and "normal" tv series are the visuals and that the stories are more fantasy-like in Anime, other than that you can always find adequate alternatives between Anime and other series if you just look for them.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, when people who have no clue think anime, they think of the stereotypical garbage or hentai and automatically assume that's its entirety. If they're not willing to look further than that, their loss.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, I might have had very bad luck then, but after watching like, what has it be 30-40 different popular ones I thought I could form an opinion, not to mention that I asked for ways around the things I dislike of those I've seen.
Comment has been collapsed.
Sorry, man, didn't mean you. There were a few comments up there that were pretty ridiculous, but what I mean is that there's usually something for everyone. I've had friends that never really enjoyed much of anime but have warmed up to a few. If you have the time you might as well try a few of the suggestions people have given you here, if you don't find anything I guess its just not for you in general. I saw that you might not have enjoyed Samurai Champloo from what you've watched so far, but I might suggest Afro Samurai anyway. Its older but its a pretty mature series, in contrast to a lot of the currently popular stuff at least.
Comment has been collapsed.
In my experience the shorter the anime the less amount of filler and bs it has, it's hard to cram pointless stuff with a more limited episode count. Try sticking to series with 12-24 episodes, there's also a couple of gems with under 10 like FLCL or Mnemosyne.
And about why I like it... dunno, I've been watching anime since I was little, I think the first anime series I got hooked with was Saint Seiya and I honestly can't remember what catched my attention back then. The one I can remember why I watched all the way was the original Dragon Ball, it was the sense of adventure and wonder it had and how the story was told as one continuous thing that naturally extended through the whole thing instead of being episodic.
Comment has been collapsed.
I like Animals because they are just so fluffy! Oh wait... Anime? The plot. What else?
Nah, just kidding. Um, I'm not sure really, I guess it is because firstly it is something to do, secondly I guess I just like looking at badass characters being badass? My favourite anime all have badass main characters. Overlord, One piece, Bleach, Danmachi, Mahouka koukou no rettousei, Death Note and Shingeki no Kyojin are some of my favourites and they all have badassish main characters.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh, come on Eren is half the time crying, half the time riding a horse.
Is overlord the one about a deserted MMO? If so I tried reading the LN and couldn't finish the 1st one, and for the record I hate leaving stuff unfinished, specially books.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, I hated Eren in AoT. He's the most useless Main character ever. Like, there is nothing that he could do on his own, without getting captured or beaten.
Even Shinji Ikari, the internet's favorite whipping boy when it comes to weak pathetic characters in anime, gets more shit done by himself.
Shinji survived his first mission, for one thing.
The only badasses in AoT are MIkasa and Levi. Everyone else is mediocre.
Comment has been collapsed.
Mikasa is a way better char than Eren, she could've been the MC and the series would be way better. also when they pulled the Eren is pathetic and can't mantain balance but, wait! his equipment was broken! Ooooh! What a surprise! I rolled my eyes so far back I saw my brain.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well for Shingeki no Kyojin a little spoiler which is revealed later in the manga: His equipment was purposefully damaged in order to keep him out from the Survey Corps Also you should read the manga. While Eren is still whiny, it is less whiny. In the anime the spent half an episode of crying as he had to fight the female titan. In the manga he fought almost immediately. And the horse riding fillers are not there. The anime has really great animation but there are small changes in the story and fillers which make the manga a lot better.
Comment has been collapsed.
Anime caters to mostly teen/adult audiences.
I think your friend is doing a poor job at giving you recommendations. Try Cowboy Bebop, Paranoia Agent, Berserk, Death Note, Welcome to the N.H.K. or Steins;Gate. Those at least don't have filler or whiny characters. As for the exposition and monologue problem, casual viewers are too stupid to puzzle anything. That's why anime like DBZ are the most popular.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ehr. I can't help but feel that you're overgeneralizating things. There are plenty of mature anime series, they just tend to often be overlooked by the mainstream crowd. If you stick to Josei and Seinen, you admittedly will have a better chance avoiding the elements you find annoying. An example of this would be a series I've just finished watching, Rescue Wings. Off the top of my head, a few other titles I would recommend are Perfect Blue, House of Five Leaves, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Level E, Michiko to Hatchin, Zipang.
Comment has been collapsed.
Of course I am overgeneralizing things, but these points seem to be present on most of the series I watched, I don't know the reason, maybe because they are the equivalent of the random TV hit here or whatever, but they seemed somewhat familiar.
I will, however, give a go to the ones (or at leas some of them) you recommended.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm gonna need months to watch all the recommendations :P but I will give them a go, thanks!
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, I mean most of the issues I have (well maybe no the inner monologues) are extrapolatable (Is that a word?) to Young adult western movies/novels (Oh yeah guy/gal with quirky name and no special qualities you are destined to save the world and are speshiul? Tell me more...)
I understand that it's the most profitable/accessible demographic to target your stuff at (and one of the least critical ones) but it gets really old really fast. I'l give some of the recomendations a go, and I mentioned earlier I watched some Ghibli movies, I think it was Princess Mononke and the Howling Floating Castle, I did like them to be honest.

Soooo,
I've watched a handful of anime series, many of them when I was a kid, the typical stuff aimed for children such as Captain Tsubasa, Dragon Ball, Digimon, Doraemon, Shin Chan that sort of stuff, and lately thanks to a very insistent friend I've watched some other series, being them (from the top of my head): DRR! Bakkano!, Kekkai Sensen, JoJo's Bizarre adventure, Madoka Magi Puella Magica, Shigeki no Kiojin and like a bunch of them more I don't really recall the names now (should've created a mal, duh) one about a killers high school or something like that? I dunno
anyhow, the thing is that I was wondering what do you guys, fans of anime, see on these works to like them. It might be because I am not their target audience but I've encountered a bunch of issues on the media I've experienced so far.
Endless exposition: Like, most of the time, and with notable exceptions of course, anime episodes, especially those that tend to view themselves as more dark, or serious, have a metric ton of exposition in them. I sincerely hate exposition, isn't it better to hint at things and let the viewer put the puzzle pieces together (something I gotta praise Baccano! for) than actually spoon fed every single detail of everything that's going on, several times ?
Inner monologues: This might tie into the previous point, because often they go hand in hand and these monologues are used as an exposition vessel, but seriously. What's with having every single character state their feelings, reactions, opinions and insights "out loud" every two minutes, I mean this might be their style of work, but I appreciate more the media that shows the characters personality towards their actions and words, rather than literally spitting out their feelings every now and then.
MC's: I don't know if this is an anime trope, because I don't think I know enough to generalize, but every, single, one seems to have an MC which is some variation of whinny/useless brat (more often than not, both) who decides/is recruited to/stumbles upon/is foreseen to save the world/win the world cup/kill vampires or whichever plot line the anime in that case follows, honorable mention if it includes some kind of sister/loved one who is a tsundere and slaps him into reason at some point and tells him to keep fighting/not be afraid/stand for himself.
Filler: tons and tons of filler, from "Riding on Horseback: the anime" to "Texting in my computer: the anime" Chekovs gun, guys, don't put stuff in you're not going to use to advance the plot somewhere.
anyways, I don't know if this came out as attacking the fans or the works themselves, but I assure you that could not be further from my intention, in fact I'm willing to give it another try between dismissing an entire genre (?) (Is it a genre? It's more of a medium, well, you understand me) on some, let's call, first impresions.
So, guys, why do you like anime, which is your favourite series and why? Have you had issue with the points I raised? If so, how did you get past them?
Thanks a lot for your (possible) answers.
Cheers, luvs.
