So that we all buy it on the first/second/third day, for 15$, instead of today for 7.5!

2 copies for same price!

Conclusion: never trust Steam sales. Check them out at steamgamesales.com.

You do know, that anyone that has been through a steam sale KNOWS to wait till the last day to see if the game they want goes on a deeper sale. When the base sale was 50% and the daily sale was 75... you should have waited the last day. I mean, steam never (to my knowledge) puts something on sale (like a publisher catalog), and then stops the sale of a specific item before the sale ends. HOWEVER steam does sometimes have sale errors where at the start of a massive sale, a game might be 75-90% off but is suppose to be 25-50% off. In this case, yes you should buy it.

+1

Was trying to figure out why people on my friends list were buying dlc when the final day hadn't even came around! Always always wait! I learnt this the hard way but it is a good lesson to learn..

Well, I did wait for the last day, since I knew the price is higher than it should be.

75% sale doesn't actually mean you will get the game you want for 75% off. It only means they want to promote sales of certain games. The thing is I though gmg would stick with their 7.5$ for Civ V, till the end, which they didn't - and I thought, what the heck - might Steam offer it for less?

I am saying the above, only because of the rip-off I had with Portal 2, in the summer. They did this AWESOME sale for 15$. Idiots like me bought it, only to find it two weeks later for 7.5$...

The fact that Steam fool people with this "SALE" and only show ppl the real SALE on the last day - is IMO worse that fooling. It is lying, creating a misleading perception. It's like leading ppl to a trap. Here's - a sale! (Sales, by the way, are the normal price tags for a product - in terms of economics. It's just that people who don't buy on sale, pay much more on the same product) and later on, people get really pissed off, because they actually ripped you off.
Yes, it is a rip-off, since the 7.5$ price, is the real price.

There's really no trick to it... logically you should be able to figure out that hey, if they're doing daily sales at even more of a discount than the week-long sale, I should wait and see what else they put out before I buy.

I really don't think their main intention is to trick people into buying games at higher prices than daily sales. I think it's more to do with giving everyone the perception that it's a better deal than it really is. What I mean is that for example in the Holiday Sale, let's just say that most of the catalogue was at about 50% reduction in prices. By having 5 or 6 games featured prominently on the front page at 75%, you might want to buy it out of impulse just because it seems much better than the rest of those 50% ones, and since it's time-limited, you had to act fast - a factor that might also influence impulse buyers. That's my theory at least.

7.5 is the big sale price, not th real price fyi. and you choose when and how you buy. If somone pays full price the day before it goes on sale then it's thier own choice. You can A) wait or B pay the price listed that's how every thing that you buy works. There's not scam here just idiots who don't understand how sales work.

Well, if some organization is having a certain "discount" price on a product for some people (e.g. Steam users), while others sell it for a higher price - it means that the people of the other stores pay the higher prices (and not vice versa). If it can be sold for 7.5$, it means it is worth not more than that.

I would put "idiots" aside, especially when trying to judge people that have an opinion different than yours.

It's a sales maximization strategy.

Also, since when did economics say the sale price is the "normal" price of the product?

It doesn't mean that at all. ಠ_ಠ Have you even studied economics? The issue of economics aside,

If a business that for some reason decides to firesale their inventory within a week and is able to give an insane discout on a particular cup brand to consumers, does that mean the value of a cup that would normally be $6 suddenly becomes $1 just because one business was able to sell it for $1? It is very unlikely that the business would be able to provide such a discount for so long; doing so does not help the business at all and the business is likely to run out of stock and unlikely to replenish that stock.

Of course DD is different from a brick and mortar store in that you can potentially have an unlimited supply of goods. The thing is that a business like Steam, for instance, if it wanted to provide such a discount consistently, would be doing it at a loss which doesn't benefit Steam and also doesn't benefit the publisher (who most likely will revoke the retailer's right to distribute its goods).

I'm guessing you're talking about the issue where the game goes on sale for $7.50 so many times that that price becomes the value of the product to consumers. Civ 5 hasn't gone on sale often enough for that to be the case though.

I do complain only because I think in some point, they wanted to trick people to buy a product for a price higher than it s worth.

What it is worth may vary from person to person..

Games like borderlands are worth the asking price, and are more than worth it on sale, imo. Civ 5, if it is your type of game, is well worth the 15$ or even the 30$, as you'll put in so many hours and enjoy the game. I bought it full price around when it came out and I have no regrets. :\

I get your point in it all. Everyone wants to save money. But I can't really see it as a "trick." @ an earlier comment of yours you say it is a rip off, but it isn't. The sale price is NOT the retail price. They do the daily deals, they announce the fact that they are doing daily deals to further lower a price of a game during the sale, where is the trick? It's all about patience. It's a bit better to wait til the end anyway, because of the deals. Get more "bang" for your buck that way.

Some devs work really hard on their games, and the games deserve the price they have. Some are a steal at their current price (I think dungeons of dredmore fits here), and others are definitely not worth the asking price!
Just figure out what you think a game is worth and wait for that price I guess...

There was never a trick to it. Anyone who think they got ripped off at 50% instead of waiting for 75% lacks common sense, and/or hasn't been on Steam long enough to know to wait until the last day. If I buy borderlands today, was I tricked into not buying it on Thursday? Hush, now.
